MEETING OF: HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION

CALL TO ORDER:
Chair Garcia called the meeting to order at 5:02p.m.
ROLL CALL:
Present: Commissioners Garcia, Boone, Geldner
Absent: Commissioners Dfaz, Gutierrez
Staff Present: Suzanne Smithson, Deputy Library Director
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:

By proper motion (Geldner/Boone) and vote, the minutes of the December 8, 2015 meeting of
the Historic Preservation Commission were unanimously approved.
QUARRY CREEK FOSSILS :
Tom Demere from the San Diego Natu ral History Museum is scheduled to present to the
commission on the Quarry Creek fossil finds at the March 14, 2016 meeting. The commissioners
inquired if Mr. Demere may be interested in giving a presentation to a larger group. Options
discussed included before or after the 3 rd grade art presentations or during the summer reading
program. Commissioner Garcia suggested discussing those options after the March presentation.
ORDINANCE REVISIONS FOR THE MUNICIPAL CODE:
Board Liaison Smithson updated the commission that no city attorney has been assigned to this
project as of yet.

VILLAGE AND BARRIO PLAN:

Commissioner Boone attended the Dover Kohl open house and planning presentation workshops
she shared that she made comments on the renderings showing the Twin Inns rotunda being
removed. Commissioner Geldner read the plan and found it very confusing in regards to parts 1,
2 and 3 of the Master Plan . By proper motion (Geldner/Boone) and vote, the commissioners
moved to craft a letter at this meeting and send the letter to Senior Planner Scott Donnell voicing
the commission's concerns regarding Village and Barrio Plan. Discussion of concerns followed
and the letter was then crafted by the commissioners.
CONFIRM 2016 MEETING SCHEDULE:
Commissioners reviewed the 2016 schedule with the possibility of changing the day the
commission meets. It was agreed to discuss at the next meeting when all commissioners are
present.
3Ro GRADE ART PRESENTATION:
Board Liaison Smithson announced the date for the 3rd grade art presentations as Tuesday, June
14, 2016. The commissioners also reviewed the letter that will be sent to 3rd grade teachers
inviting their participation.
PROPERTIES OF CONCERN:
Commissioner Geldner noticed Carrillo Ranch has been quite impacted by the current rain. She
planning to contact Mick Calarco with her concerns and send pictures she took showing the
damage. She is interested in how to get funding for regrading and retaining walls.
Commissioner Boone mentioned the giant eucalyptus tree that fell very close to the Victorian
home on the corner of Oak and Highland.
CARLSBAD HISTORICAL SOCIETY UPDATES:
None
BOARD LIAISON COMMENTS:
Board Liaison Smithson updated the commission on the Cole redesign stating that it is still on
schedule for completion. With additional information to follow.

Commissioner Boone mentioned she went to the La Posada ceremony at the Barrio Museum that
was sponsored by the city and several businesses such as Lola's. She said this was a highlight of
her Christmas vacation and was delighted that the city sponsored such an event.
