HISTORIC PRES ERVATION COMMISSION
SPECIAL MEETING

CALL TO ORDER:
Workshop started at 5:35 p.m. when there was a full quorum.

Board Liaison Smithson and Historic Sites Manager, Mick Calarco worked with the commission to
understand their goals. The commission concluded that their primary goals should be:
1. Establish what currently constitutes the "historic properties inventory" that the
Commission is charge with maintaining by ordinance.
2. Clarify steps for adding properties to the inventory.
3. Reestablish a plaque program for designated historic properties and add to the inventory
or place plaques for educational purposes only without designation.
4. Build communications with Planning and other City departments so the commission is
aware of growth in the City and impact on historic sites and areas. Having the commission
used as a resource in their field of expertise.
5. Educate the public about the history of Carlsbad and work with property owners to help
them know where to go to receive grants or tax breaks or other funding to fix up their
properties.
6. Be an active and engaged commission.
