February 2U, 1958
The regular meeting of the Library Commission of the City of Carlsbad was
held Feb. 2U, 1958 in the Library. The meeting was called to order at 8»l5 PM.
Present were: Chairman McCannj Commissioners Pace, Prout, Walker; and Librarian
Cole.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved as corrected.
Chairman McCann reviewed the building plans for the community center* The
Womens' Club already has given $25,000.00 and the City will match that amount. About
3UOO sq. ft. of space is the maximum that can be built for $$0,000.00, and the Wcaens'
Club needs 2UOO sq. ft. That would be inadequate. The architects are still working
on the plans.
Librarian Cole reported a terrific boom in reference work during the past few
months. Librarian Cole suggested to the City Manager that part of the problem of
crowded conditions might be resolved by keeping the Library open on Thursdays and
also during the evening on Monday and Tuesday. This suggestion was rejected.
Librarian Cole also suggested Julie Almack should receive more pay than a clerk
because of her training. The City Manager agreed to $% more than her present salary,
>4iich would then be comparable to the salary of Policewomen. Librarian Cole would
like to see Mrs. Almack's time increased from k to 8 hours, and the other assistant's
time doubled, that is from t wo to four hrs. a day.
Commissioner Pace read the letter to be sent to the City Council this month.
Revisions were ma4* and the letter was approved for mailing.
c Librarian Cole reported the circulation for January was 3368. It reached
UOOO last July which was the highest in the past 2 years. There is always a slack in
December and then it usually starts back up in January*
The secretary was instructed to write a letter of appreciation to Qloria Qarofol<
She paid for the lumber and her brother built the shelves in the back room.
Commissioner Prout was asked to write the next letter to the City Council.
Meeting adjourned at 10tl5 PM.
