The meeting of the Library Commission of the City of Carlsbad was called to order at 7rbO by the chairman, Dr. e^drey, in the Children's Library. Present were Commissioners Richardson, Spivey, Straus*, and Walker, and Librarian Cole. Councilman La Roche was a guest. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Librarian Cole reported growth in circulation from October 1953 when our Library was operated by the County. At that time there was a yearly circulation of 1(000, &s contrasted with approximately $6,000 at the present time. Dr. Splvey reflected the feeling of the Commission when he commented that this increase can be attributed directly to the work of Librarian Cole and her staff, and also through the help of the friends of the Library. $4000 was allowed for the remodeling of the Water Co. building. Only one bid was submitted and that was from Ziggy Shaw of Vista for the amenmt of $6625* The Commissioners discussed in great detail the best possible recommendation! to make, The Commission decided to submit a letter to the City Council written by Dr. Spivey which would contain the following: 1. request to keep the $1*000. 2. ask that future councils add a reasonable amount each year to have as a building fund for a new Library. 3» make necessary plumbing repairs in Water Co. Bldg. • k. retain the building presently housing the Children's Library. 5. build a desk in a central location in the adult Library for adequate I supervision. •\ 6. suggest that the corner lot adjoining the Adult Library is an ideal ' location for a new Library. j 7. inform the Council that a comprehensive survey will be made by the •] commission and will be presented to the City Council upon completion.
