Carlsbad City Library Date of Meeting: January 13, 1969 TRUSTEES PRESENT; Wrench, Howard-Jones, Hill, Sheffler, Carli, Librarian Cole GUEST: Mr. Healton, Rep. of the Genealogical Society The meeting was called to order by President Wrench at 8:00 p.m. Order of agenda was waived so that the Board might consider the Genealogy Society request for storage space first. At this time the Genealogy Society requested space.for storing books and pamphlets to be used by members at meetings of the Society in the Library. A three-shelf bookcase, locked, is to be provided by the Society for this purpose. After some discussion, it was MSC that the Society's request be granted on the following conditions: ' ' 1) The Librarians and other qualified researchers have access to the materials for reference. 2) No responsibility for loss or damage to be incurred by the Library. 3) Style and sire of bookcase to conform with existing shelving. h) This arrangement is subject to periodic review. The Board will check the legality of this action with the City Attorney before formally implementing it. Furtbe**- more, the Board noted that this was a unique situation and was not to be viewed as setting a general precedent. The fact that it is a limited request, that it will make available a reference collection of great interest to the community which would not otherwise be possible, and that conditions in the library at this time allow for honoring such a request, all served to enable the Board to act • affirmatively in this particular matter* CORRESPONDENCE CLA Newsletter MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING — Approved LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Mrs. Cole Renorted that Mrs. Grace Stevenson, consultant responsible for justifying the issuance of federal grants to libraries, will be studying the operation of the Carlsbad Library. NEW BUSINESS Carlsbad Art League Request for Exhibit in Celebration of San Diego's 200th Anniversary— Art Rental Committee met with Mrs. Marge Temple and decided not to participate in the program. It was deemed impractical because of the space such an exhibit would require. The League wanted to hang 75 paintings and the exhibit was to run longer than the three weeks allowed by Board policy* Consequently, i would significantly interfere with operation of the multi purpose room in the Library. A question was raised about the responsibility and authority of the Art Rental Committee in making decisions about exhibits. It was pointed out that the Secretary of the Board is authorized to review and approve applica- tions presented to him by the Art Rental Committee. APPOINTMENT TO ART GIFTS COMMITTEE — 1969-72 TIRM The Board will contact possible candidates for the vacancy on the Art Gifts Committee caused by the exniration of Natalie Tuomi's term.
