CARLSBAD CITY LIBRARY
July 13, 1970
Trustees present: Anita Donahue, Don Hickethier, Bill Hill
Marjorie Howard-Jones, Librarian Georgina Cole. Mayor
David Dunn* met with the group as a representative of the
City Council.
Minutes of the June meeting were read and approved.
LETTERS
Hill reported that the new letters for the outside
of the library had been installed at a total cost of
$593.60.
BURROUGHS PROPOSAL
Burroughs proposal was reviewed. This includes a
packet of pictures of the library and list of business
books needed. Mayor Dunne suggested that the proposal
be presented to the City Council if Burroughs Corp.
approved the idea of making this contribution to the
business library. The tentative plan to name the section
after the contributor was also discussed. Don and ^ill
will meet with Burroughs general manager next week.
BUDGET
Mayor Dunne indicated that the city budget will probably
not be finalized until late July or early August as the
new Gity Manager is still studying it. He stated that a
small tax wrte seems to be indicated at this time.
ARTS GIFT COMMITTEE
Mrs. Ann Henry will be invited to be a member of the Arts
Gifts Committee, a three year appointment. Marge Howard-
Jones will contact her. The Board plans to invite the
chairman of this committee to meet with them at the
August meeting. The Committee will meet earlier and elect
a chairman for this year. Mrs. ^athryn Jones is the re-
tiring chairman.
TEN- YEAR PIAN
Marge Howard-Jones *nd Anita Donahue reported that this
committee has had one meeting and working on the plan.
LIBRARIANS REPORT
Mrs. Cole reported that the summer program of children's
plays is very successful.
The committee on Talking books gave a program at uoean-
side Braille Friendship club in June and this contact was
very helpful in showing the committee how to better serve
this special population. ?he Braille Committee in ^os
Angeles is giving Carlsbad City Library three machines
to use here. ®ur library now has 120 talking books on six
months lean from the Los Angeles Braille Institute.
The library staff showed the film "World of Andrew Tflyeth"
to the Carlsbad Women's Club where it was very well
received.
Members of the staff attended a state workshop on Business
and industry in San Diego recently. Other staff members
attended a work-luncheon with Friends of the Library
members and personnel from the Museum of ^an. Librarian
Cole attended the ^err*^system workshop on Californiahistory and MOT rare books.

CHICANO HEEDS DISCUSSED

Bill ,^111 suggested that a person from the **exican-
^marican community be invited to meet with the Board so
that better nays ef working with both children and adults
of Mexican background could be discussed.
Don SiH. suggested the YMCA Recreation program might like
a tie-in with the library as a meets of promoting better
acquaintance with the library and what it can offer young
people.
Bill Hill stated that he would start attending the
meetings ef the Community Involvement Committee to determin<
if this would be a useful way to acquaint people with what
the library has to offer*
Anita Donahue suggested that notices of Library Story aours
be written in both Spanish and English and perhaps distributed
in the area where Spanish speaking people would be most
likely to read them*
Mrs. Cole mentioned the problem ef staffing which always
follows any unwrailly large crowds in the library* as for
example, the children's plays or story hours*
