Howard-Jones, Read and Librarian cole. OLD BUSINESS The chairman distributed copies of the reply sent to C.I.C. in response to questions raised in their survey. Mr. HHI and %•• ^iokethier then discussed the letter they had sent to Burroughs personnel re proposed business section of library. This will be followed up by a personal visit by the two trustees* The Ten-Year Projection committee reported on their meeting with Mrs. ^ole and •Kuth Banks, audio-visual consultant for the Serra system. Several of the proposed projects suggested by Mrs. Banks, can be incorporated in the library program without extra funding and oorelated with recommendations made by the projection committee. Copies of the minutes of this meeting were circulated to the board, ^ne project suggested would require the use of a car or station wagon for transportation. Chairman Hill reminded the members that a city- car is available for offical library projects. NEW BUSINESS The Board agreed on the need to begin their study of the library budget early • this year and perhaps concentrate on improving the financial picture in at 'least Wo areas: head librarian's salary and book budget, although several other areas of concern should also be looked at carefully. Shelving to make the mezzanine operational is greatly needed as well as a children's librarian* These priorities tie in closely with those recommended by the '^en-^eqr projection committee* Bill nill emphasized that we should start looking at figures for the budget at the next meeting., studying circulation figures, work loads, comparative professional salaries etc. ^on Hickethier suggested that we begin soon to devise a format for presentation to the City Council and familiarize ourselves with the Griffenhagen-Kroeger salary survey, since the city will .probably be governed by their -recommendations. It was also suggested that the Board plan to devote part of each meeting for this budget study, from January until June. NOW thatoooperation with HUD is at least a Jaentatttive possibility and the ^erra System is extending its service»we need to consider that the amount of tax money allowed library in city budget is decreasing. This could have serious implications in financing the library, if allovfed to continue, BOard needs to give this some study. Don Hiokethier, at the Board's request, will continue his -fine job as chairman of the budget fiommittee for next year. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT Mrs. ''ole reported that aChristmas " concert by xerry and Anisa will be held in the library on Sunday, December 20 at 8r.^. The public is invited to attend. She also distributed copies of PRELIMINARY OUTLINE OF PROJECTED AV PROGRAMS FOR CARLSBAD CITY LIBRARY prepared by Ruth Banks. She also reported that Pat Pinz, president of "Friends" would be leaving carlsbad' soon due to her husband's tranfer. Mrs. Pinz will be .greatly missed since she has done such an excellent job at president of that organization. Bill Hill then mentioned that he had received a letter from ^rs. Pinz giving the board a summary of the "Friends" projects for this year, i'he major project is to rewrite the "History of Carlsbad" booklet. She also indicated her agreement with the new board policy to require one adult to supervise each twenty children for any programs put on by volunteer etc. groups. -2- CITY OF CARLSBAD Bill ^ill requested that circulation figures for the past six months be given to the ^oard at the Itanuary meeting, Dorothy Read has agreed to be the regular liaison person between the Board and C.I.C.
