MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
CARLSBAD CITY LIBRARY
FEBRUARY 8, 1971
Meeting opened at 8J15P.M. with Trustees Donahue, Hill, Howard-Jones, Read and
librarian '•'ole present. Minutes of last meeting were read and approved with
correction of spelling of ^riffenhagen-Kroger.
Chairman Hill read a letter from Mrs. <Jean Drench requesting an outside box
for return of books when library is closed. i^rs. Cole explained that the
problem of non-payment of fines for over due books was the main reason for
not using a book drop, ^ver a two-year period, the library failed to collect
approximately $1,800 in overdue fines, due to use of the book drop. Mr. Hill
will reply to Mrs. French explaining library policy on this.
OLD BUSINESS
Store-front library- tors. uole prepared a report for City Council on this and
^ill Hill appeared at City Council meeting and defended proposal which was
approved unanimously by the Council. However, the plan mj».fail because the
owner of the building (Mr. Roy Pace) in which HUD plans to locate, has indicated
his opposition to a store front library in his building and has stated he will
refuse to rent it if it is to be used partially as a library. At the moment, the
library bran^Jj seems quite indefinite. Since the Board is firmly behind the idea,
it was agreed that Mr. HiJ.1 and Mrs. Howard-Jones would discuss the problem with
City Planning Director, Mr. Olinghouse.
Bill Hill mentioned that his firm, Hughes -Aircraft Co., ^ceanside, Calif., has
agreed to donate a desk and chair for the new branch.
Ten-Year plan- committee will meet sometime next montjj and finalize their goals.
and Don will call on Burroughs personnel next month as they did not have
time to arrange a meeting in January.
Mrs. Cole indicated that budget sheets will be given to Department Heads on
March 12 and must be returned by March 22 so the ^oard needs to establish
priorities soon. Bill, ^on and Georgina will work together on budget between
now and next meeting, %roh 8th.
