In attendance were Trustees Brownley, Cipriano (3:10), Falken- stein, and Hammond. Also Present were Mrs. Cole, Library Director; Charlene Kennedy, Reference Librarian; Mrs. Casler, City Council; Miss Ayars, Friends of the Library and Mrs. McWilliams, Genealogical Society. The meeting began with the introduction to the Trustees of Char- lene Kennedy, newly hired reference Librarian. Mrs. Kennedy comes to Carlsbad from Milwaukee, where she spent 5 years in the Science and Industry Division of the Milwaukee Public Library. She discussed her job there, in the Business Information Service, with reference to her plans for expanding Carlsbad Library's service to local business and industry. She distributed to the Trustees a sheet detailing collection needs at the Library in the field of business and outlining steps to be taken to implement a viable program here. The December 20 minutes were approved as submitted. Committee Reports Building and Grounds--Mr. Hammond reported that the two spaces for handicapped patrons had been added to the parking lot. It was noted that already some problems had developed with non-handicapped patrons using the spaces. , Mr. Hammond will report to the Trustees in February re- garding the stairway from the mezzanine. Budget—Mr. Falkenstein reported that through a typographical error when the Finance Department was typing the budget, the funds for the Audio Visual Clerk were included, but the position was not. A memo from the Finance Director, dated December 19, 1978 shows that the correct total of employees in the Library should read 20 instead of 19. Personnel—Mrs. Brownley reported that the city-wide reclas- sification would be ready in 2 weeks. Old Business Master Plan—The Board will meet with Ray Holt on January 31 at 3:00 P.M. to discuss the master plan. CLSA Funds—Mrs. Munn stated that she had discussed with Mayor Packard her concern about the Council placing CLSA funds in a separate account. Mr. Falkenstein moved, with a second from Mrs. Brownley, that we request an agenda bill asking for money from these funds to be used to implement Mrs. Kennedy's plans for our Business and Industry section. Mr. Hammond suggested we obtain a figure from Mrs. Kennedy rather than requesting funds in a general way. Mrs. Brownley suggested we approve the motion and call on Mrs. Kennedy to have a specific figure and background information before the bill goes to Council. As finally stated, the motion called for the Board to request that CLSA funds, in the amount deemed necessary by Mrs. Kennedy, be used for the Business and Industry collection. The motion passed unanimously. Mrs. Munn .asked that Mrs. Kennedy have the details by the January 31 meeting with Mr. Holt. Statistics--Circulation in December was up 1,324 over December 1977.
