HomeMy WebLinkAbout1979-12-19; Library Board of Trustees; MinutesCARLSBAD CITY LIBRARY LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Regular Meeting - December 19, 1979 The meeting was called to order at 3:10 p.m. by President Falkenstein. In attendance were Trustees Brownley, Cipriano (3:15), Hammond, and Munn. Also: Miss Ayars, Friends; Mrs. Cole, Library Director; Mr. Baldwin, Assistant City Manager (3:15). The minutes of the November 21 meeting were amended as follows: 1) Friends, item 1 should read (in the interest of clarity): The Friends have purchased a "Speak and Spell" made by Texas Instruments. 2) In the Personnel report, Munn moved, with a second from Falkenstein, to delete the word "continuing" from the phrase "continuing support." Unanimous approval. COMMITTEE REPORTS Building and Grounds: Hammond reported that nothing had been done. Budget: No report Personnel: Brownley will send a holiday greeting and appreciation-for- your-fine-efforts card to the staff. Children's Division: Cipriano called the Board's attention to an article on Airport 80 in the current issue of American Way, the American Airlines magazine. Mr. Cipriano also reported to the Board on the City Fees Committee activity. Hammond moved, with a second from Mrs. Munn, that the Board request information from the City Finance Department concerning Finance's projection that the library program will need $14 million dollars over the next ? years (i.e. how was the figure arrived at?). The motion passed unanimously. OLD BUSINESS Goals and Objectives—After each Board member voiced his ideas on goals and objectives, the Board, on a motion from Mrs. Munn and a second from Mrs. Brownley, approved the following (which will be submitted as an agenda item for the Council): Resolved: That the Council create a task force to consider location and financing of a central library facility for the City of Carlsbad; Further, that the composition of the task force be in keeping with the recommendations made by Mr. Holt in his revised master plan for the library (p. 97). NEW BUSINESS Mr. Cipriano asked Mrs. Cole to clarify the policy of the Serra System regarding use of films by public school teachers. FRIENDS The final "Little Things Sale" on December 17 netted $177; One hundred dictionaries have been sold; Jack Smith of the Los Angeles Times will speak at the Library on January 31. LIBRARIAN Mrs. Cole reported that the National Endowment for the Humanities had granted $10,000 for continued grant planning of the Library's local history project. The Librarian also requested that this quarter's CLSA monies ($9,891.00) be designated for use in purchasing microfilm of magazines and newspapers. The Board approved this request, which will free much needed shelving, and the request will be sent to Council.
