TRUSTEES
CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by President Schramm at
3:00 P.M.
ROLL CALL
Present - Schramm, Trigas, Falkenstein, and Brunn.
Grosse arrived at 3:10 P.M.
Absent - None.
Also present were:
Clifford Lange, Library Director
Mary Casler, Mayor
Girard Anear, Council Member
Caroline Schindler, Serra Advisory Board
Bee McWilliams, Genealogical Society
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Minutes of the Regular Meeting, held June 16, 1982, were
approved as submitted.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Youth
Trustee Falkenstein distributed copies of the Children's
Department newsletter for the months of July and August,
and reported on the scheduled activities for same.
OLD BUSINESS
CLSI Upgrade
Director Lange reported that Council approved the upgrade
of the CLSI system. He indicated that he has been
notified by the Oceanside Library that some of the pieces
have arrived, and they are scheduling the installation
for Labor Day weekend, as same will necessitate the
system being shut down.
Mr. Lange continued that the City will also receive an
Apple Computer as a backup system, and additional software
as part of the package.
Appointment to Serra Advisory Board
Director Lange reported that Council reappointed Caroline
Schindler as the representative to the Serra Advisory
Board, and he congratulated her on behalf of the Staff and
the Board.
Children's Room Addition
Director Lange referenced the memo dated July 16, 1982,
regarding the suggested reorganization plans, and
indicated that Staff is recommending one change in the
architect's original plans; that being the removal of a
portion of a wall to allow visual supervision.

Board discussion related to the proposed layout and
reorganization of the library.
Mr. Lange added that the architect will make the changes
at no cost to the City.
TRUSTEE GROSSE ARRIVED AT 3:10 P.M.
Role of the Library Trustee
President Schramm indicated that the handbook will be
updated, and she suggested Board consideration of an
orientation packet for new Trustees. She further
requested that the Board consider setting up By-Laws to
assist the Board in understanding their role.
NEW BUSINESS
Heating System Repairs
Director Lange referenced his memo of July 15, 1982 on
the matter, and briefly outlined the two alternatives
provided by the service company. _
Council Member Anear suggested that Staff contact Marty
Orenyak, Director of Building and Housing, and have him
review the situation.
Board discussion related to the small difference in cost
between retubing the existing boiler, versus installation
of a new gas fired water boiler.
The Board directed Staff to obtain additional information
on the matter as soon as possible, and report their
findings to the City Council.
Library Clerk/Clerk Typist
Director Lange reported that there is a vacant position
on the bookmobile for a clerk typist, and indicated that
interviews will be held on Friday, July 23, 1982. He
added that the classification has been changed from
Library Clerk to Clerk Typist at the request of the
Personnel Director due to their similarities.
President's Additional Business
President Schramm reported that a letter was sent to the
. Staff for their work during the period without a Library
Director.
Mrs. Schramm also read a thank you note from Mr. and Mrs.
Clifford Lange, in appreciation of the luncheon held in
their honor.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Director Lange reported on complaints received from
several parents regarding the game "Dungeons and Dragons,"
which is part of the Children's Summer Reading Program.
He indicated that although time for a game has been
scheduled, no games have been played because of lack of
participants.

21> 1982 TRUSTEES
Director Lange reported that the Annual Jazz Concert will
be held on August 15, 1982 at 2:00 P.M., on the lawn.
Director Lange indicated he has been asked to serve as the
Chairman for the AV Committee of the Serra System, and he
reported on the first meeting he attended, held July 15,
1982.
Director Lange briefly outlined the suggested plans for
reorganization of the main floor and first mezzanine, and
discussion reflected same.
Director Lange expressed concern regarding the need for
security when the Library Conference Room is used after
9:00 P.M., and indicated that he would return to the Board
at the August meeting with a recommendation regarding
security of the building.
Director Lange referenced the annual statistics for
fiscal year 1981-82, and discussion reflected same.
Board discussion then related to the loss of reference
materials. Director Lange indicated he is studying the
matter, and will report back to the Board when he has
determined the extent of the problem.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
In the absence of President Boone, Mrs. Schramm indicated
that there will be no meeting this month.
GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
Bee McWilliams reported that the Genealogical Society
will hold their 5th Annual Yard and Plant Sale on Friday
and Saturday, August 27 and 28, 1982 at 8:00 P.M., at
2936-44 Roosevelt Street, which is a vacant lot.
SERRA ADVISORY BOARD
Caroline Schindler reported that the Serra Board will not
hold a meeting this month.
