b. On-Line Reference Service Update (Dialogue)
Director Lange reported the oonputer arrived yesterday
and was installed behind the reference area. He stated
any of the Trustees wishing to see it could do so
following the meeting.
c. H. W. Wilson Project
Director Lange reported the library had received a thank-
you letter from H. W. Wilson for their participation in
the test. This Library was one of the top three in usage
of the WILSONLINE. He added that he felt this system had
possibilities inasmuch as indexes are the backbone of
most small libraries. The price of this system would be
about half the normal cost for many on-line data bases.
d. Board Member Workshop Report
President Schramm gave a report on the workshop she
attended, and gave a copy of the roster to the Trustees.
She gave them a pamphlet on the workshop. President
Schramm felt this had been a very worthwhile workshop and
she highly recommended the gentleman who conducted it.
NEW BUSINESS;
a. Library Staff Reports:
(1) Charlene Kennedy - On-Line Workshop
Charlene Kennedy reported on the conference she attended,
stating this was to learn how to search on-line data
bases. She felt the H. W. Wilson Project had been
helpful in learning the rudimentary procedures.
Ms. Kennedy gave a list of all the sessions of the
conference and felt the product presentations were
very interesting. She also found the exhibits to be
interesting as well as informative. She added she had
collected all the literature she could.
Ms. Kennedy stated that Librarians are becoming
specialists and libraries are changing rapidly.
(2) Director Lange announced that Joe Skymba was not
present, but would arrive later, as he was taking
pictures for Parks & Recreation.
b. Library Card Proposal
Director Lange referred to the material in the packet and
stated there are other libraries in the Serra system that
are going on-line and checking books out on a computer
terminal. This has led to the development of a new
library card.
Director Lange explained that the new library cards would
have space for barcodes on the back side, and the
home library barcode on the front.
Council Member Lewis asked whether there would be a
charge for the cards, and Director Lange stated they
would be free.

(2) Joe Skymba - Dealing with the Public Workshop
Joe Skymba reported on the seminar he attended.
He stated City employees deal with a demanding public.
There are six messages: What you mean to say what you
actually say, what the other person hears, what he thinks
he hears, what the other person says and what he thinks
he says. Mr. Skymba stated they did some role playing on
how to deal with irate people. Interpersonal
communication skills were stressed.
c. Quarterly Report
Director Lange referred to the copy of the report in the
packet, stating there was a significant increase in
circulation. He stated the October statistics were also
in the packet, showing circulation was up 27%.
Director Lange stated the Branch Library had done very
well and their circulation has stayed above 5,000. He
felt after the expansion the circulation at the Branch
would increase.
NOTEBOOKS
President Schramm announced there were new, smaller
notebooks, which could be taken back and forth. These
would hold six months material, rather than one year.
She added the Board Members could pick up their packets
and put them in the books themselves. There will be a
master book at the Library for use.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT;
Director Lange reported on the reassessment of the
physical arrangement of the library, including the need
for additional space in the Audio Visual area and the
possibility of moving the periodicals collection and
the fiction collection to better locations.
He also reported that the Public Library Executives
Association of Southern California will be meeting at
the Carlsbad Library on Friday, November 16.
The Chamber of Commerce Library Business Workshop will
be held Thursday morning November 15, at 7:30 a.m. The
topic of the meeting will be micro-computers and word
processors.
Director Lange visited the Huntington Beach Public
Library to examine their on-line catalog. The use of
the catalog was impressive.
Next week is Children's Book Week and the Children's
Division will hold a book sale hosted by the Friends of
the Library.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY;
Miss Carolyn Ayers reported on the book sale at the Fall
Faire and the success of the Friends-hosted reception
for the new City Council.

SERRA ADVISORY BOARD;
Mrs. Margaret Brownley and Director Lange reviewed the
Serra Cooperative Library System Services. The purpose of
the System was discussed. The three primary benefits of
System membership are resource sharing through inter-
library loan, reference service and audio visual
services. It was pointed out that all of these services
help the Carlsbad Library to provide library service more
efficiently and at less cost.
At the next meeting, the System finances will be
reviewed.
ADJOURNMENT;
By proper motion, the meeting of November 14, 1984, was
adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Harriett Babbitt
