HomeMy WebLinkAbout1984-12-19; Library Board of Trustees; MinutesMINUTES Meeting of: LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES Date of Meeting: December 19, 1984 Time of Meeting: 3:00 p.m. Place of Meeting: Library Conference Room TRUSTEES CALL TO ORDER; The meeting was called to order by President Schramm at 3:04 p.m. ROLL CALL; Present - President tchramm, Trustees Trigas, Falkenstein, Martin and Grosse. Absent - None. Also Present were: Clilfford Lange, Library Director Margaret Brownley, Serra Advisory Board Representative Carolyn Ayers, President, Friends of the Library Council Liaison Lewis APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The Minutes of the September 18, 1984, meeting were approved as presented." The Minutes of the November 14, 1984, meeting were approved as presented. Ca-MITTEE REPORTS: a. Building and Grounds Trustee Trigas reported the branch library addition will be ready by the end of the month, with the official opening in mid-or-late January. b. Budget No report. c. Personnel Trustee Falkenstein reported on personnel changes, including resignations of: Betty Maerkle, Fred Horn and Karen Webber. d. Youth Trustee Grosse reported on children activities at the library for the pas't month. OLD BUSINESS; President Schramm stated she would call for the Friends of the Library and Council reports at thic time; due to prior commitments of those representatives. COUNCIL REPORT; Council Liaison Lewis reminded the Board of the wish list coming back to Council, and their request for Saturday hours which they want reinstated. He said they should let Council know they want that item reinstated. a. Telephone Bill Report Director Lange said there was nothing to add to the report in the packet. b. 1984-85 Budget Add-Back - Library Hours Director Lange reported the one proposal the Library has made was for the added library hours. This will come before the Council January 8, 1985. President Schramm listed the Council Members for Board Members to call. c. CLA Annual Conference Director Lange referred to the report in the packet and discussed the exhibits, adding computers were the dominant item. d. California Library Data Base Director Lange reported the data base will be on OCLC. Details are being worked out between the State Library and OCLC. NEW-BUSINESS; a. 1985-86 Budget Discussion Director Lanae stated the division heads will submit their own budaets to him January 2, and he will bring the budget to the next Board Meeting for discussion and review. The budget will be turned in to the City in February. b. Library Automation Tour The Board and guests were given a conducted tour to see the computers in use in the Library. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Lange add,ed to the report in the packet that Santa Claus visited the Library today. Circulation was discussed by Director Lange, stating that there was an overall increase, and he felt the branch library circulation would increase after the addition was ••• opened. Director Lange said planning for rearranging the Library is still in process, with the proposal to be finished in January. MINUTES LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES December 19, 1984 Paqe 3 TRUSTEES OTHER; Trustee Trigas reported that Saitmis Properties have plans to build a graduate school and law school in Carlsbad. She spoke with them regarding a business library> and they were receptive to discussing possible cooperative arrangements. GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY: Dale Smathers reported on recent activities of the Society. SERRA ADVISORY BOARD: Margaret Brownley reported on the financing and administration of the Serra Cooperative Library System. She distributed copies of a Fact Sheet giving sources of revenue and a budget summary. LIBRARY BOARD WORKSHOP; Director Lange reported on his meetings with Assistant City Manager Mannen regarding the expansion of this Library buildina. He.added a date would be set for a workshop with the City Council. OTHER: Director Lange distributed and reported on a new video tape fine policy for the Library, involving a difference in the amount of the fine and how it is administered.
