HomeMy WebLinkAbout1985-11-21; Library Board of Trustees; MinutesMINUTES Meeting of: Date of Meeting: Time of Meeting: Place of Meeting: LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES November 21, 1985 3:00 p.m. La Costa Branch TRUSTEES CALL TO ORDER; The meeting was called to order by President Schramm at 3:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: Present - President Schramm, Trustees Falkenstein, Grosse and Martin. Absent - Trustee Trigas. Also Present were: Clifford Lange, Library Director Geoff Armour, Assistant Library Director John Cahill, Library Administrative Assistant ' Council Liaison Lewis Margaret Brownley, Serra Advisory Board Representative Barbara Otwell, President, Friends of the Library APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The Minutes of the October 16, 1985, meeting were approved as presented. COMMITTEE REPORTS: a. Building and Grounds The Board and Staff visited the Alga Norte Park Site to review its location and suitability as a library site. Trustee Martin referred to the Revenue Status Report as distributed to the Board Members. c. Personnel Trustee Falkenstein reported the positions now open in the Department are being advertised or waiting for interviews. d. Youth Trustee Grosse distributed the monthly Calendars and Fingerplays and Songs booklet. She reported the story times and reading times are well-attended and still growing. There will be a Christmas gathering at Harding Center, December 23, 1985, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. OLD BUSINESS; a. Security System John Cahill reported the bids for the security systems at the Main Library and Branch will be opened December 4, 1985. He will give a further update at the next meeting. b. Part-Time Salary Schedule Director Lange referred to the documents in the packet and added he would answer any questions. First Quarter Report FY 1985-86 Director Lange referred to the report contained in the packet and added that business at the Library has been increasing dramatically. LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT; Director Lange reported that during the construction of the parking lot for the Library, parking will be available across Elm Avenue next to the Fire Station. Some activities and programs at the Library will have to be cancelled. The construction will probably take the entire month of January. John Cahill reported the Media Services and 'Arts Coordinator are being moved to the Colonial Mall space. At the present time, the entire area is being refurbished. Geoff Armour reported on the reorganizational moves to make more effective use of the Library space and to increase internal security. He stated the mail boxes are now in the staff lounge and counter space has been increased. A securit gate has been installed to keep the public from behind the circulation desk. Three cash registers have been ordered— one at the main desk, Audio Visual and the Branch Library. The back door onto Elm Avenue has been locked and will be kept locked at all times. A new vehicle has been received, a 1985 Mercury Marquis stationwagon, and a new sedan will be forthcoming. Directer Lange reported on the California Library Association Conference he attended last weekend, stating the transferring of books onto laser disks to preserve the books was discussed by the Deputy Librarian of Congress. The entire topic of laser disk technology and library applications was explored. Another topic at the conference was the literacy program, with presentations on companies supporting the program to deal with employees that hav5 reading problems. The third topic dealt with was library standards. Director Lange said in the past the national standards were difficult t use and the validity had been questioned. New efforts are planned to address these and other problems. Director Lange stated he had gone to New York for two days and was at the H. W. Wilson Company. He added that he had volunteered this Library as a test site for the compact disk project. Director Lange stated that John Cahill will be on the Library Staff only until the middle of January. The City Manager has offered him another position with the City. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY; Barbara Otwell reported on the Friends of the Library Conference held at South Pasadena, stating she felt this Library was far ahead of the other Libraries represented there. She reported on the programs to be held for the Christmas Season and concluded the report asking for suggestions for a Chairman for the Book Fair. SERRA ADVISORY BOARD: Margaret Brownley reported on the October 17 meeting and stated she was encouraged about the growth of the membership. RECESS ; President schramm declared a recess at 3:48 p.m., and the Meeting reconvened at 3:56 p.m., for the Workshop. LIBRARY BOARD WORKSHOP; Jim Hagaman, Research/Analysis Manager, presented the latest Public Facilities Management Systems report, as contained in the handout given to the Board Members. He used wall charts to illustrate the different areas covered in the report. He also distributed brochures giving more infor- mation about the Management System. The Board expresse'd its appreciation, for the knowledgeable, concise and well- presented report.
