ADULT LEARNING PROGRAM
Monthly Report
May 1996
1. New Promam Business Cards
New program business cards (attached) were designed and printed. They are now
available at the Main Library’s Information Desk, other library locations, and in the
community. The matching program brochure should be ready in June.
2. Intermediate Curriculum
The new instructional format of the Adult Learning Program, which makes heavy use of
the computer lab and, particularly, of intensive phonics software has been very beneficial
to both learners and tutors. With the help of Shirley Taylor, formerly our VISTA
volunteer and now a library employee, related materials to work on spelling and writing
have been developed. Now some of the learners have advanced to a point where they
need some new approaches in order to learn some of the really frustrating spellings in
English: for example, is the name for a little wind that blows spelled “breeze” or “breaze”
or “breze” or “brieze”? All are phonetically correct and there is no rule to help you
decide. A group of 6 experienced tutors, whose learners have all reached this stage in the
program, met with Shirley and Coordinator Lynda Jones to address the challenge. They,
with several other tutors, have formed 2 groups to develop an Intermediate Curriculum for
spelling and writing, to accompany the continued use of the phonics software in the lab.
3. Tutor Orientation and Training
On May 17, fifteen potential tutors came to a 3-hour Tutor Orientation about literacy and
the Adult Learning Program. On May 18 and May 29, 8 new tutors completed the
methodology tutor training.
4. Library Staff Visit
On May 23, about 25 library staff members visited the Adult Learning Program for the
monthly staff meeting. On hand were 25 adult learners and tutors to demonstrate how
they study in the computer lab, in one-to-one tutoring on personal goals, in the writing
class, and in the reading group.
5. OTAN Traininp and the Internet
On May 30, Coordinator Lynda Jones attended a training for adult educators sponsored
by OTAN (Outreach and Technical Assistance Network), a consortium of adult education
programs. All of the library literacy programs in Southern California, in conjunction with
OTAN, have received a grant which will pay each program’s costs and provide training
and technical support for every library literacy program to be connected online and to be
connected to the Internet. The grant will pay Carlsbad’s fees for the first year, starting
July 1, 1996. Lynda is working with the City Information Systems Department, volunteer
Randy Scott, and others in the library to install this exciting new component of our
program.

CHILDREN’S DIVISION
MONTHLY STATEMENT
MAY 1996
May was a very busy month for the Children’s Division staff.
Beside our regularly scheduled programs such as Storyhours,
Storytime, Storycraft, Grandparents Storytime, Bedtime
Storyhour and Prime Time Club, there were several special
programs including the 1 5‘h annual Spelling Bee semi-finals and
finals and the Carisbad Strings Program. This month also marks
the beginning of the promotion of the Summer Reading Program,
with many visits to the city schools.
The highlight of the month was the Spelling Bee which attracted
49 spellers from grades 1 to 8. In the finals, the two top spellers
in each grade battled it out for the top awards. Thanks again to
the Friends of the Library, who donated the trophies for this
contest .
Bedtime Storyhour, Storycraft, Prime Time Club and Tuesday
Storyhour met for the last time until fall. Storytime and
Grandparents Storytime will continue with breaks during August.
As we prepare for the Summer Reading Program, various
members of the staff are involved with different extra duties from
designing displays and signage,to planning programs, distributing
materials to Centro and Branch and training volunteers. A
special feature of our school visits has been the addition of the
husband of one of our staff as the character Browser the Bear.
Richard Engle has been a big hit with the children when he
appears in his bear costume and has made our Summer Reading
Program promotional visits memorable.

LA COSTA BRANCH LIBRARY
MONTHLY REPORT
MAY 1996
CIRCULATION
Branch circulation totaled 22,936 for May. This total included 11,776 adult
items, 8,427 children’s items and 2,733 video tapes. Daily circulation was 882
and hourly, 83.
USERS
This month’s total user count was 19,734. The average daily count was 72
each hour and 759 each day. Hourly usage increased 3% over May, 1995.
CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES
Activities were high in the Children’s areas with 8 class tours and 9 storyhours.
Plans for “Camp Read S’More” (Summer Reading Program, 1996) were also
being developed. The Summer Reading Program will begin June 24th and end
August 2. The Awards Party will be held August 8. During May and the early
part of June, the Children’s Coordinator has been and will be hiring volunteers
to assist with the nine scheduled activities which include storytelling, puppets
and “Hug a tree and Survive”, an instructional program on surviving in the
wilderness.
CD-ROM
The city’s Information Systems department hired outside help from Mc Info to
resolve the Branch’s problems with the CD-ROM access. With their help the
Branch regained partial access to the Reference CD-ROMs and the speed of
access was greatly improved. However, most of the CD-ROMs needed some
reconfiguring by Information Systems to prevent them from locking up in mid-
search. This had not been qccomplished by the end of May.
NEW SHELVING
On Memorial Day, 23 sections of shelving were installed at the Branch.
Friends of the Library had purchased the shelving in November. 60 hours of
staff time were spent on that day shifting and reshelving books, video tapes,
compact discs and video tapes. Universal shelving (with sloped shelves like the
Main Library) now house the Branch audio tapes and compact discs providing
space for growth. More room has been made to bring videos in storage out on
to the open shelves, and room has been made in the fiction and non fiction
areas for the growing collection. This acquisition gives the Branch room for
approximately 2500 more volumes of books, and another 500 videos. Patron
reaction to the new arrangement has been positive.

ESL Class and North Country Jab Center-Occupational Training Services.
Callie Ahrens attended City of Carlsbad Strategic Planning Steering
Committee meetings on May 7, 16 and 23. She also attended a Staff
Development Committee Meeting on May 9.
The Information Desk is successful with both patrons receiving
' guidance and the staff who serve them. During the month of May,
there were 1,562 questions answered at the Information Desk; the average
number of questions per day was 62 and the average number of questions
per hour was 14.
Technical Services Report
May 1996
In May, Techcal Services staff added 1,301 new print items and 232 audioyisual items to
the library’s collection. They deleted from the system 352 print items and 157 audiovisual
items.
Patrons used home computers to dial into the library catalog 344 times. Patrons with the
Mainstreet service accessed the catalog 90 times.
Use of the self-checkout machine remains steady, with 3% of the main library’s May
circulation total. The total number of items checked out was 1,845.
Our newest service, patron placed holds, which allows patrons to place their own reserves
at any terminal in the library or by dialing in from home, remains popular. Out of 2,616
holds placed, 477 (1 8%) were patron-placed.
Progress continues to be made with the Linked Systems Project, the state-funded grant
that will link the catalogs of four public libraries in San Diego County, including Carlsbad.
We have received part of the software and hardware needed. The first installation is being
done at San Diego County Library, where there is a training room with six computers.
Selected staff from all four libraries will be trained there; they in turn will train other staff
once the project is operational in their libraries.

PROPOSED SALES TAX MEASURE
Two County wide meetings have been held to discuss the quarter cent
sales tax proposed for the November ballot. The major issue currently is
securing legislative authorization to place the measure on the ballot. This
authorization is being sought through the amendment of SB1958,
Senator Mello’s bill which provides for 118 cent sales tax for ten years.
The County’s proposal is for a quarter cent for five years. The
amendment of SB1958 would add this as an alternative in the bill.
SB1958 is scheduled for review by the Assembly Revenue and Taxation
Committee on Monday, June 17,1996. An effort will be made to amend
the bill during the review. The bill also will be reviewed by the Assembly
Local Government Committee on Wednesday, June 26,1996.
