MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS:
Library Director Pizzuto advised the Board of the need to provide revised statistics for Media
Services, Events Booked, for the months of January and February.
Trustee Swette commented on the increase usage at the Library Learning Center and asked
about the impact on the staff. Library Director Pizzuto responded that the staff is quite busy
and the Library has been able to make some minor changes in FTE allocation but that at
some point it will be necessary to look at additional staffing.
Trustee Bradley commented on the invitation from Poinsettia School for Community Outreach
Coordinator Lizeth Simonson to speak to non-English speaking parents about the importance
of reading to their children and the services offered at the Learning Center. Principal Librarian

Carol Naegele responded that the Library is hoping that as the programs offered at the
Learning Center are better known, staff will have more opportunities to attend parent meetings
at the schools in the area.
LIBRARY VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS & RECOGNITION:
Library Director Pizzuto introduced the Library's Volunteer Coordinator Amy Bennett who
provided information on the Library's various volunteer opportunities and a handout of "fast
facts" containing the total number of hours and number of Library volunteers for the past fiscal
year. Of particular interest was the estimated dollar value of the volunteers' service for the
past two fiscal years: $374,000 in FY06-07; $402,000 in FY07-08.
She reminded the Board that the Library's annual volunteer recognition event was scheduled
for April 2nd at the Senior Center.
Library Director Pizzuto added that in addition to the volunteer event in April each year, the
Literacy Program has traditionally held an annual event for their volunteer tutors and the
learners and their families.
Principal Librarian Carol Naegele stated that the Literacy event this year is scheduled for June
6th, also at the Senior Center, and traditionally is a (
learners as well as a thank you for the volunteer tutors.
6th, also at the Senior Center, and traditionally is a celebration of accomplishments of the
Principal Librarian Naegele explained that the Literacy Program is fortunate to also have
volunteers provided by AmeriCorp, which is a federally funded program administered by the
state, and from the San Diego Council on Literacy, which provides referrals for vision
screening, training and a variety of other services. Volunteers from these organizations are
included in the Library's volunteer recognition events as well as events hosted by their parent
organizations.
Library Director Pizzuto concluded this agenda item with information on the two community
volunteer organizations that support the Library; the Friends of the Library and the Carlsbad
Library and Arts Foundation. The Friends of the Library volunteers have long been
responsible for the used book sales at both the Cole and Dove Lane facilities, and the Friends
usually recognize volunteers at two events each year, a costume luncheon at Halloween, and
their annual meeting in June. The Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation has traditionally
recognized their volunteers from the home tours as well other areas of service by nominating
an individual annually for the North County Philanthropy Council regional event.
PRELIMINARY BUDGET FY2009-10:
Library Director Pizzuto distributed a handout containing the adjusted budget totals for the
current fiscal year and the preliminary figures for FY2009-10 as submitted to Finance. She
explained the process for this year, including the impacts of the proposed 5% reduction, and
Library Board of Trustees Page 3
Minutes of March 18, 2009 Meeting
assured the Board that she would bring back information on any adjustments as that
information is received.
The Board had several questions about the process and impact on services to which Library
Director Pizzuto responded and further explained that although each department was asked to
submit a plan for a 5% reduction, the City is anticipating an overall reduction of 3.5% for
FY2009-10 budget. The Leadership Team will make the recommendations for which
departmental reductions will be taken realizing that some departments, such as Police and
Fire, have a much smaller margin for reductions that would not significantly impact safety
services.
PUBLIC LIBRARY FUND (PLF) ALLOCATION:
Library Director Pizzuto referred the Board to the information contained in the packet which
announced that Carlsbad would receive only $35,000 this year which is a know reduction from
last year.
Trustee Kamenjarin asked how much staff time was involved in generating the report used to
determine the funds and Library Director Pizzuto responded that the information was actually
taken from our annual report to the State Library, requiring no additional staff time for PLF
specifically.
CALTAC MEMBERSHIP & WORKSHOP:
Trustee Bradley delivered a report on the workshop she attended with Deputy Library Director
Smithson last week, reviewing the highlights from the presentation.
Library Director Pizzuto asked if the Board had a preference on continuing their membership
in CALTAC and a motion by Trustee Bradley died due to lack of a second. There was no
further discussion or decision on the matter.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Donated artwork for Learning Center - This item is on the agenda for next week's Council
Meeting for them to accept the donation and approve its installation at the Learning Center.
CORE Cashiering system - The Library is ready to implement the new City's central
cashiering system next month which will allow patrons to use debit/credit cards to pay fines
and fees at the circulation desks.
Envision Carlsbad - The purpose of this effort is to collect input from the residents as the
City updates its General Plan, now 15 years old. Various methods are being utilized to collect
information to include a resident survey which was distributed with the utility bill last month and
a series of Community Workshops. The Library has partnered with Recreation to provide kid-

friendly activities at the workshop at the Senior Center so that families with children may
participate. Both Deputy Library Director Smithson and Library Director Pizzuto are
participating on the staff component.
State Library Grant for "Get Involved" training - The Library has applied for a grant to send
five individuals to attend the May training workshop in San Francisco which focuses on
increasing volunteer use in the library.
FOUNDATION REPORT:
Library Director Pizzuto reported that the main topic of discussion was the Castles of Carlsbad
home tour on May 16th and the corporate sponsors for this year. Also discussed were
bookings for showing the DVD on the Learning Center fundraising campaign.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT:
Library Director Pizzuto reported that the Friends have not met since this Board met last.
NSDC GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY:
Board liaison Marg Kealey reported on the upcoming programs for March and April and
announced that Saturday classes in genealogy will begin again on April 18th.
LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS:
Trustee Kamenjarin asked for an update on the legal case against a suspected thief of Library
DVDs and Deputy Library Director Curtis responded that a court date has been set for next
month and Library staff members attended the preliminary hearing where the defendant pled
"not guilty". He said there were other witnesses present which leads him to believe that the
investigation may have extended beyond the Library.
Trustee Kamenjarin asked if the Library had determined the extent of the loss and if any
Library materials had been recovered. Deputy Library Director Curtis replied that the Library is
not sure how long the theft had been going on but a number of DVDs are missing and none
have been recovered.
Trustee Benson asked about the status of the new webpage and Community Coordinator
Jessica Padilla Bowen responded that staff was attending training on content management
this month in preparation for rollout in June.
PUBLIC COMMENT:
