CALL TO ORDER:
Chair Bob Benson called the meeting to order at 3:59 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
By proper motion (Hulsart/Hinman) and vote, the minutes ofthe October 24, 2012 meeting of
the Library Board of Trustees were unanimously approved.
MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS:
Trustee Hulsart expressed interest in the safety and security training for staff held in October
which led to a discussion about the various types of incidents that occur within the library, the
occasional involvement of local law enforcement, and the training for Library staff members.
Trustee Benson asked if the recent upgrade to the PC, print and copy management solution
went as expected and Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto replied that there are a couple of
items on the punch list but anticipate all issues satisfied bythe end ofthe month.
COMMUNITY ACTIVITY GRANTS COMMITTEE APPOINTMENT:
Trustee Hinman volunteered to serve on the committee this year and Trustee Hulsart agreed to
serve as a backup if needed. Both offers were accepted without a need for a vote.

QUARTERLY TECHNOLOGY REPORT:
Business Systems Associate James Jones reviewed the elements of the report which indicated
that wireless usage is continuing to increase as it the use ofthe self-check machines. Recently
added to the report are the statistics for usage of the early literacy stations, and indicate
especially heavy demand at both Dove Lane and the Learning Center.
PERFORMANCE MEASURES:
Management Analyst Steve Didier presented the summary of the performance measures for
the Library which will be included in the City's State of Effectiveness Report. The Library
continues to receive high marks in customer satisfaction from the annual City survey as well as
the mystery shopper reports.
RE-CARPET/REDESIGN PROJECT UPDATE:
Library Management Analyst Didier advised the Board that the City's Property and
Environmental Management Department (PEM) is taking the lead in preparation of the
necessary paperwork for proposal projects for the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget
in FY2013-14.
CARLSBAD READS TOGETHER:
Community Relations Manager Jessica Padilla Bowen announced that the committee has
selected Shanghai Girls by Lisa See for this year's program in April and the author will be here
th
on April 13 for a book talk and autograph opportunity. The Gallery will be hosting an
exhibition of textiles from southwest China and other events are being planned.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto reported on the following:
Recent evacuation of the Cole Librarv - A false alarm issued from the fire pull station in the
children's area ofthe Cole resulted in a brief evacuation of employees and patrons. The culprit
was a toddler who was very resourceful in moving a stool over to the pull station and pulling
the lever. The toddler and one of the firefighters had a brief chat following the event. The
Library and Fire Department are exploring options for securing the alarm as this is not the first
occurrence.
Patron complaint - The film. The Hunger Games was scheduled for the teen pizza and a movie
night at the Dove Lane facility tomorrow night. Twenty teens had signed up for the PG-13 film

and all had submitted their signed permission slips; however, due to recent current events, it
was decided that the showing would be postponed. The book and movie have both received
high acclaim, and the Library intentionally provides opportunities for teens to come together to
discuss issues expressed through literature.
Librarv Strategic Planning - On November 29, and at last week's Division Heads meeting the
staff reviewed the Strategic Directions and brainstormed ideas for initiatives for FY2013/14.
The inclusion of Cultural Arts Office staff in the planning prompted some changes in the
language to be more inclusive. The revised document will be provided to the Board at the
January 2013 meeting. The proposed initiatives for next year will not be final until the City
Council has established its priorities for next year and instructions for the budget are received.
Librarv personnel - Librarv Assistant Amy Jordan was selected from the applicants for the
Library Training Coordinator position and transitioned to this position in November.
Technologv - The RFP for the Integrated Library System (ILS) was released on December 4*^
The deadline for proposals is January 24, 2013.
Programming survev - A new survey is being distributed at Library and Cultural Arts programs
to further identify the types of programs and classes of interest to the fifty-plus population.
Summer Reading Program 2013 - The theme this year is "Reading Is So Delicious" and the
Library is participating in a different national consortium this year which may result in a few
changes to materials and costs.
FOUNDATION REPORT:
Trustee Hulsart reported that at the last meeting Dr. Rezvani was selected as the new President
and Neil Black is the new Vice President. The foundation will be presenting the City with a
check from the Gartner funds for $61,320 sometime after the first of the year.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT:
Trustee Hulsart announced the current sale going on in the lobby at this time and that the
Friends have made over $6,000 from the sale of used books.
NSDC GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY:
Board liaison Marg Kealey reported on the installation of officers at the December luncheon
and other events in December and provided information on the upcoming events in January, to
include the date for the next series of genealogy classes (Jan.9, 2013.)

Monthly LIBRARY Reports
for
October 2012
Systemwide...
1. The week of October 22-26, in conjunction with Xerox and its partners, the Library
upgraded its entire PC, print and copy management solution. This upgrade included
copiers, printers and the hardware and automation software that allows patrons to sign
up and be assigned to a patron computer and to pay for a copy or print job.
2. The Cannon Art Gallery opened the exhibition, "Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art,"
on October 6. With more than 300 skate decks on display, the exhibition was an extremely
popular destination for Carlsbad's younger audiences. On Saturday, October 20, the
Library & Cultural Arts department teamed up with staff from Parks & Recreation and
Housing & Neighborhood Services, and with many talented volunteers to host the first
Teen Open Studios event held in the Dove Library's North Parking Lot. Attracting
approximately 550 attendees, the event featured hands-on art projects, teen decent tours
ofthe exhibition, live music and other fun attractions as well as support from a variety of
community partners.
3. Library & Cultural Arts actively participated in Halloween on Elm, October 27, by providing
storytelling, hands-on arts activities, cookie decorating, sound support for the live
entertainment and costume contest organization.
4. All Library & Arts locations were closed the morning of October 25 for the annual all-staff
training session. Over 150 full-time and part-time employees attended Dr. Steven
Albrecht's engaging presentation on safety and security in the workplace. Based on
feedback from attendees, staff confidence levels in handling difficult situations was
greatly improved as a result of their participation.
5. Amy Jordan was selected as the Training Coordinator for Library & Cultural Arts. Amy
started on October 22 in her new role. An internal recruitment will be held for the
opening she leaves as a Library Assistant in the Cole Children's Division.
CCL, Dove Lane...
6. The Library's concert series on October 14 featured Spanish guitar maestro David
Maldonado and Flamenco dancers performing for 200 in Schulman Auditorium. The
response was enthusiastic and many attendees requested that the performers be asked
back.
7. A crowd of 170 enjoyed a reading of Arthur Miller's classic "A View from the Bridge,"
presented by Carlsbad Playreaders, on October 29 in Schulman Auditorium.

8. Ms. Frizzle returned on October 16 to entertain and educate 65 adults and children about
bats. Attendees also received "Batty about Books" bookmarks, bat rings and small bat
maze puzzles.
9. The October 30 Twilight Tales Storytime had 49 adults and children attend. Many ofthe
children came dressed in their Halloween costumes, which made for a festive, fun event.
10. Teen Services Librarian Darin Williamson organized six events with a total of 91 attendees;
the Pizza and a Movie event featured Source Code and drew 13 teens; three Games and
Refreshments events drew 37 teens; Read for Chocolate had 25 teen participants;
Pumpkin Carving had 16 teens carving imaginative pumpkin creations.
11. Two book clubs were led by Library Assistant Susan Burke and read The Paris Wife by
Paula McLain and The Almost Moon by Ali Smith. The Monday Night Classics Book Club
was led by Senior Librarian Leila Dooley and discussed Moonstone by Wiikie Collins.

12. Fifteen writers attended a poetry writing workshops with poet and CSUSM professor
Brandon Cesmat at Cole Library on October 28.
13. Children's programs at Cole included a Star Wars Reads Day with 48 attendees who
listened to a retelling of the story of Star Wars and then made three Star Wars related
crafts; Project Wildlife's "Luna the Screech Owl" program with 63 attendees; a Dia de los
Muertos celebration which drew a crowd of 105 who learned about the holiday via
stories, and then decorated their own sugar skulls; and during Fire Prevention Week, the
Carlsbad Fire Department visited the library, told stories, showed how their fire gear
works, and gave a tour of their fire truck.
14. Both the Tuesday Evening and Thursday Afternoon Book Clubs, led by Library Assistant
Elyse Roy, read and discussed The Story of Beautiful Giri by Rachel Simon.
15. Genealogy Library Technician Jan Mongoven presented two sessions of the small group
workshop Focus on Old Fulton NY Post Cards on October 2 and 16. Old Fulton NY Post
Cards is a website that provides access to New York newspapers. The newspapers have
been digitized as pdf and are searchable. The website is a volunteer effort.
16. On October 6, the Genealogy Division and the North San Diego County Genealogical
Society sponsored their annual Fall Seminar, "Impact of Politics and Religion on Our
Ancestors' Migration." Four members of NSDCGS, Steve Baird, Emma Moore-Kochlas,
Margaret Read, and Burt Risser, presented case studies. 55 people attended the all-day
event.

17. History Room Librarian Amy Davis met with Eldean Ledgerwood Bratton, a long-time
Carlsbad resident and daughter of Charles Ledgerwood. Mrs. Bratton donated items
related to her family and to her father's business.
Learning Center...
18. Children's programs included a visit from Ms. Frizzle ofthe Magic School Bus who shared
information about bats with 52 attendees; Project Wildlife presented "Birds ofthe Night"
with 51 attendees; and a 3-week session of Digital Story Telling where seven 3rd, 4th, and
5th graders learned PowerPoint by documenting their family stories.
19. Fifteen teens celebrated Halloween at the Learning Center by decorating pumpkins with
paint, feathers, glitter, and more including a contest for best pumpkin. A photograph of
one ofthe participants appeared in the October 20 North County Times.
20. The Osher Institute completed its classes held at the Learning Center on October 12. The
5-week session on "Heath Myths" attended by approximately 21 participants was well
received. In addition, one participant signed up to become a Literacy Services tutor.
21. Literacy Services' annual "Each One Reach One" open house was held Thursday, October
4, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Although attendance was down from prior years, learner and tutor
registrations were up.

November 2012
Systemwide...
1. Final touches on an RFP for an integrated library system (ILS) were completed in November.
The RFP was posted for potential bidders on December 4. The RFP is a detailed document that
consists of collective input from both the Library and IT Department. Responses are due
January 24, 2013.
2. The Library and Cultural Arts partnered to show skate films tied to the Cannon Art Gallery
exhibition "Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art" on November 14 and 28. The niche films
drew smaller crowds than the usual films but were enjoyed by those who attended.
3. November saw the conclusion of the popular In-N-Out Burger "Cover to Cover Club" reading
incentive program for children ages 4 through 12—a program which runs in many public
libraries for about 6 weeks every autumn. Neariy 1200 children earned certificates good
toward a free cheeseburger or hamburger at In-N-Out Burger. Placing a provided poster at the
Circulation Desk at Cole greatly increased the participants at that site. The staff received many
compliments from parents and children about the program.

4. More than 350 participants attended the Family Open Studios Plus event November 17 at the
Carisbad City Library complex. After touring the popular Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art
exhibition in the Cannon Art Gallery, visitors participated in creating artwork in the courtyard.
The "Plus" portion ofthe event - funded by the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation's Robert
H. Gartner Endowment Fund - took place in the Schulman Auditorium and featured a
skateboard video by Bones Wheels team manager Jared Lucas, with a film score composed
and performed live on stage by UCSD percussionist Eric Derr. An article about the event was
featured in The Coast News.
5. The Children's Division's family program, "Thanksgiving Fun," attracted 193 attendees who
listened to stories, colored and enjoyed a craft. Science Saturday drew a sizeable crowd of 89
who learned about Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster and other creatures who may or may not
be real.
6. Teen Services Librarian Darin Williamson organized three events with a total of 40 attendees;
the Pizza and a Movie event featured The Avengers and drew 23 teens; two Games and
Refreshments events drew 17 teens.
7. Two book clubs were led by Library Assistant Susan Burke and read The Swerve: How the
Worid Became Modern by Stephen Greenblatt and Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier.
The Monday Night Classics Book Club was led by Librarian Laura Coleman and discussed
Captain Blood by Rafael Sabatini.

8. The library's Cinema Series continued on November 3 with the acclaimed film "The Way,"
starring Martin Sheen, in the Schulman Auditorium. About 120 people attended and many
stayed for the post-film discussion.
9. The Carisbad Fire Department provided fire prevention and emergency preparedness
information in the Dove Library Courtyard on November 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

10. Fifteen writers attended a journaling workshop with Carisbad author and lecturer Erica Miner
at Cole Library on November 17.
11. Children's programs included the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center's interactive presentation of
"Insect Inspectors" with 75 participants and an afternoon of Book Bingo where participating
children played bingo to win books.
12. Genealogy Library Technician Margaret Read presented two sessions of the small group
workshop Focus on Ancestry: State Censuses with 24 attendees.
13. Reference Librarian Erin Zocco worked with Community and Economic Development staff to
train them on the use of the electronic resources ReferenceUSA and Rand for Carisbad city
business outreach efforts and to prepare publicity for local business about these resources.
14. The Tuesday Evening Book Club and the Thursday Afternoon Book Club, both led by Library
Assistant Elyse Roy, discussed Destiny ofthe Republic by Candice Millard.
Learning Center...
15. Children's programs included a Dia de los Muertos sugar skull program with 35 participants
and a Thanksgiving story craft with 23 participants.
16. Teens learned about Native American culture on November 9 by putting their crafting and
trivia skills to the test. Participants were challenged to a Jeopardy-style Q and A session to test
their knowledge of U.S. history.
17. Literacy Services received the California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) grant award in the
amount of $35,852.
18. The Library was represented by Learning Center staff at two community outreach
opportunities: at the biannual meeting of the Hispanic Network Breakfast at Mira Costa
College and at the monthly meeting ofthe Carisbad Youth Enrichment Services (Y.E.S.) where
CUSD Superintendent, Suzette Lovely gave a presentation about the school district's priority
goals and tasks for the year 2012/13.
19. Principal Librarian Glynn Birdwell graduated from the Public Management Academy sponsored
by the Centre for Organization Effectiveness.
