CALL TO ORDER:
Chair Hulsart called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
By proper motion (Bradley/Hinman) and vote the minutes of the September 18, 2013 regular
meeting of the Library Board of Trustees were approved as submitted.
MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS:
The Board reviewed the monthly reports and Trustee Hulsart asked how the information about
the closing of the library facilities during the renovations next year would be handled and if the
Gallery would be open during the period that the work was underway at the Dove Lane
location.
Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto responded that during the period the complex is under
construction the gallery would not be accessible and that every effort was being made to work

around the already scheduled exhibitions as well as other programs. She added that plans for
keeping the public advised are being developed.
At this time Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto introduced the new Cultural Arts Manager,
Vincent Kitch to the Board and provided some information on his past experience.
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM PROJECTS UPDATE:
Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto introduced Management Analyst Didier who brought
the Board up to date on the status of the projects and responded to questions from the
Trustees.
LIBRARY LEARNING CENTER PRESENTATION:
Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto introduced Principal Librarian Glynn Birdwell for this
agenda item. Ms. Birdwell introduced Community Outreach Supervisors Carrie Scott and Lizeth
Simonson who provided a PowerPoint presentation on the Library Learning Center as it
celebrates its five-year anniversary. The information covered services provided both in the
bilingual and literacy divisions.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Library & Cultural Arts Director Pizzuto briefed the Board on the following items:
California State Library Survey - The survey was received last week and has a November 15
deadline for submittal, which is before the next Board meeting. The survey will be on the next
agenda.
Training & Development - All supervisors are receiving 16 hours of coaching and development
training in preparation for the pay for performance system being implemented in January.
Citywide Customer Service Training - Library & Cultural Arts staff participated in the test and
design of a new training course.
California Library Association - Twenty Library staff will attend the annual conference for
professional development held this year in Long Beach, November 2-5.
City's General Plan revision draft - The draft is anticipated to be released to the public
sometime in October and a presentation on the plan will be scheduled for this Board's
November meeting.
Library & Cultural Arts Stratigic Directions — The annual review of our Strategic Directions is
being delayed until the results of the City-wide strategic planning is known. If the City's
planning effort identifies significant changes, the department's strategic directions would be
revisited accordingly.
California Shakeout exercise — Staff will be participating in an exercise on October 17th before
the facilities are open to the public.

Technology -
• A system upgrade is scheduled for Columbus Day and the larger ILS project is on
schedule with training on the new modules in November.
• New software for event management, ActiveNet, is being implemented for class
registration by the Parks & Recreation Department as well as Cultural Arts. The Library
is expected to begin using the product initially for room reservations in early spring.
• Plans for the website redesign are moving forward in earnest with a March go -live date.
Dove Lane — Some shelving has been removed behind the Reference Desk as a result of
balancing the electronic and print collections. This makes more space available for public use.
A number of resources are now available electronically and other sources are being moved into
the circulating collection.
Recruitments — The remaining Lead Librarians have been selected for the Reference Division
and will be announced soon. The Business Systems Technician part-time position has also been
filled.
Surveys — Initial testing for the telephone survey determined that it was too long and was
reworked; it will be completed by October 31. The intercept survey should be completed by
November 15.
FOUNDATION REPORT:
Trustee Hulsart reported that at the meeting yesterday the Treasurer reviewed the investments
and discussed the recent donation received from the Benson estate, valued at $1.6 million.
Long-time Board member Alan Marblestone was honored at the meeting and the invitation list
was reviewed for a reception to be held on December 10th recognizing past Board members.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT:
The Friends are holding their annual volunteer luncheon on Halloween in the Gowland Meeting
room and the Holiday Book Boutique is scheduled for December 9-11.
NSDC GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY:
Board Liaison Marg Kealey presented highlights of the past months programs and previewed
upcoming ones. She also announced that the genealogy classes have been suspended until
after the beginning of the year.
LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS:
Trustee Bradley distributed copies of a U-T San Diego Sunday September 29th article by Richard
Lederer in which he shared his "favorite passionate quotations about libraries" on the occasion
of the grand opening of the San Diego Central Library.

Monthly LIBRARY Reports
for
September 2013
Systemwide ...
1. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, sponsored by the American Library Association.
Hundreds of children and teens who signed up for library cards or showed their library
cards at a service desk at any Carlsbad Library site received a small prize.
2. The after -school Homework Zone re -launched for the new school year on September 9.
Volunteers are available at all three library sites Monday through Thursday afternoons to
assist students with their school assignments.
3. The library accepted more than 70 entries from San Diego county poets for the 25th
annual Magee Park Poets Anthology, which is published with support from the Friends of
the Library. A local poet and teacher serves as the editor and will spend October selecting
poems to include in the anthology, which will be released on Dec. 4.
4. Complementary Library & Cultural Arts programs continued around the very popular
"Elliott Erwitt: Dog Dogs" photography exhibition in the Cannon Art Gallery. More than
400 people participated in Family Open Studios Plus on September 7 and enjoyed
activities such as making a dog mask, mural painting and agility performances featuring
local dog trainers with their favorite canines. The dog-themed mural is current on display
behind the Dove Circulation Desk. Additionally, the library screened three dog -related
movies in September and on September 21, the library hosted two acclaimed authors as
well as two therapy dogs for a talk about the comfort provided by our furry friends.
5. On September 12, Volunteer Services hosted an orientation for 17 new potential
volunteers. Killian Metzger, Volunteer Services volunteer, gave a short personal story on
his own experience volunteering with Library & Cultural Arts. He shared about how he
has grown as a person and the skills he has had the opportunity to develop.
6. Volunteer services has placed 16 new volunteers, enhancing the work of the Department
by organizing and building our paperback book collection, serving our students through
the Homework Zone, handling the book donations we receive daily, keeping our shelves
in order and by bringing the library home to those who can't make it to our buildings
through our Homebound program.
7. On September 25, Library & Cultural Arts staff joined staff from Parks & Recreation and
Carlsbad CERT team members at Stagecoach Community Park for important care and
shelter training. Emergency Preparedness Manager David Harrison provided instruction
on standing up care and shelter facilities should Carlsbad have a need during an
emergency.

8. Librarian Erin Zocco provided library outreach and training on databases to Calavera
Middle School, teaching 170 sixth graders how to use Science in Context and Student
Resources in Context.
9. Book clubs in September read and discussed Cheryl Strayed's memoir, Wild: From Lost to
Found on the Pacific Crest Trail; The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick; The Art
Forger by B.A. Shapiro; and Frenchman's Creek by Daphne DuMaurier.
10. Reference staff taught several classes at the Library on Dove Lane and the Library Learning
Center; a total of 31 students attended classes on improving Internet skills, downloading
ebooks, using email, and social networking. There were also two e-book classes held with
three attendees at each.

11. The Dove Lane Library was closed on September 3 and 4 for major repairs to its air
conditioning system. During the closure, staff continued to provide service to the
community from other library locations, as well as assisting several hundred patrons from
the front door and via phone.
12. On September 14, best-selling authors David Brin and Alan Russell talked to an audience
of 40 at Dove Library about their science fiction and murder -mystery books. They
provided writing tips to the aspiring authors and signed their books for fans.
13. Johnny Appleseed paid a visit on his actual birthday, September 26. Farley the Fiddler (of
Disneyland fame) entertained 49 children and adults with music and stories of Johnny
Appleseed's life.

14. On September 22, 20 people attended a poetry reading at Cole Library featuring Carlsbad -
based poet Shadab Zeest Hashmi and Joseph Milosch.
15. Genealogy Library Technician Margaret Read presented the two Focus on PerSI classes to
a total of 17 people on September 3 and 17. PerSl is the online index to articles in
genealogy journals and magazines and is part of the Library's subscription to Heritage
Quest.
16. Genealogy programs co -sponsored by the Library and the North San Diego County
Genealogical Society included instruction on MyHeritage Family Tree Builder (63
attendees), the Beginning Genealogy Class (27 attendees), and "How We Developed our
Chromosomes" (50 attendees).
17. The Carlsbad History Room is currently located below a portion of the Library's HVAC
equipment. There has been a recurring leak from the equipment and staff are in the
process of temporarily shifting materials and moving a portion of that collection to a more
protected staff area at the Cole Library. The permanent fix of the leaking equipment and

the location of the History collection will be addressed with the upcoming renovation
work.
18. Regular children's programs resumed on September 3 including all early childhood
morning programs and Tuesday's afternoon programming for grades K-5. Afternoon
programs in September included back -to -school storytime, talk -like -a -pirate day, and
Disneyland's "Farley the Fiddler" portraying Johnny Appleseed.
19. Library Assistant Angie Manderfeld shared tours of the library and resources for upcoming
school projects to 72 students from St. Patrick's School.
Learning Center ...
20. On September 3, regular children's programming resumed with Bilingual Story -Craft,
"Puros Cuentos y Pan Dulce," and Preschool Story Time. Afternoon program highlights
included 20 participants making traditional pinwheels.
21. Teens gathered on September 27 and learned how to make loteria cards and pinatas to
celebrate Hispanic Heritage month. They also enjoyed hot chocolate and Mexican sweet
bread.
22. Community Outreach Supervisor Lizeth Simonson and Librarian Missy Shaw (from Cole
Children's) were invited to be part of Jefferson Elementary to School night. Information on
library cards, programs, and services was distributed to parents.
23. The Literacy Learner book club discussed The Outsiders. The November selection is The
Witch of Blackbird Pond.
24. The first $10,000 portion of the 2013-14 California Library Literacy Services (CLLS) grant
has been received. The final grant report for 2012-13 was submitted.
25. Community Outreach Supervisor Carrie Scott celebrated her 25 years of service in literacy
programming by making her first sky dive. Her "Leap for Literacy" took place on
September 8, International Literacy Day, with a goal to raise $13,000 for the San Diego
Council on Literacy. Carlsbad City Library's literacy program was one of five founding
affiliate programs of the Council on Literacy, which supports the city's Literacy Services
program with referrals, professional development, materials, eye care assistance for
learners, and advocacy.
