JULY 2018
ITEM #6
1. The all-new Summer Reading Adventure had a very successful July. In July alone, 937
people of all ages signed up for the program, with more than 909,000 minutes read and
155 online reviews contributed. This is especially impressive since tracking minutes read
was optional for adults, and on line reviews were optional for youth. Feedback about the
new website Beanstack, used to record the reading, was very positive and included lots
of appreciation for Beanstack's flexibility.
2. The Library & Cultural Arts Department has two newly promoted library staff. Brandon
Tiongison has been promoted to full-time Library Assistant I from part-time Library
Technician in Youth Services, where he began in May of 2015. Brandon has worked at
Carlsbad City Library, as a guidance counselor at Aviara Oaks Middle School and as a
Boys & Girls Club site supervisor at Camp Pendleton. Madelyn Horton is a new full-time
librarian for Reference Services. She came to Carlsbad from Escondido Public Library
where she served as an adult services librarian. While working at Escondido Public
Library, Madelyn also worked part-time shifts for Carlsbad City Library, where she has
been employed part-time for 13 years, and at MiraCosta Community College.
3. Collection and Technical Services Librarian Kim Tubbs-Nelson's book review of Crash
Course in Time Management for Library Staff was published in Public Library Quarterly.
The review can be read online at
https://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/KzTBthZwVPUhjT8WR7lg/full
Additional library staff reviews will appear in future issues of Public Library Quarterly.
CCL, Dove Lane ...
4. At the July 24 City Council meeting, our City Council approved a lease with the vendor
who will operate the cafe out of Dove Library. Lisa Martel will operate Chapters, with a
menu and atmosphere that will complement and enhance the Dove Library experience
for patrons. Over the coming months, the city will work in partnership with Lisa to
complete the space and get it ready for business. An opening date has not yet be~n
finalized, and library staff expects to have an update in the next month.
5. The annual Teen Talent Shows proved to be popular again this year. The singing show
took place on July 12 and featured 17 participants and 15 acts. The dancing show on July
26 featured seven local dance acts. The talent shows wrap up Aug. 9. This year's first-
place winners of each show will perform during the pre-show before the Aug. 17 TGIF
Concerts in the Parks performance.

6. On July 14, the library hosted a multimedia presentation on Alaska by award-winning
photographer and videographer Rich Reid. Rich led trips in Alaska for National
Geographic Expeditions and provided 115 attendees with tips on making the most of
their trip, sharing photos and video clips of Alaskan scenery, wildlife and culture.
7. More than 60 people attended the July 28 Grow Your Garden and crop swap event.
There were 11 individuals who attended the propagation workshop to receive one-on-
one instruction. Many participants also planted seeds in newspaper pots that were
made using our newly purchased pot making tool.
Georgina Cole ...
8. On July 15, the library hosted author and historian on Hawaiian history Dr. Sandra
Bonura for a celebration of Hawaiian culture. Thanks to assistance from Carlsbad Senior
Center staff, the Halau Hula o Pualani dancers wowed the 65 people in attendance with
a short performance and set the stage for Dr. Bonura's engaging talk.
9. On July 22, the library was anything but quiet when San Diego's favorite Zydeco band
the Bayou Brothers performed at Cole Library to a full house of more than 80 patrons.
Some patrons sat outside the Community Room to listen in while others danced in the
library to the upbeat music.
10. The Genealogy and Local History division hosted several popular programs in July.
Seventy-five people attended the July 24 meeting to learn about using Google Photos
while 54 attended an Intermediate Genealogy class at the city's Faraday center to learn
about accessing and using church records for genealogy research.
Learning Center ...
11. As the 2018 Summer Youth Literacy Program ends, pairs continue to meet and complete
their lessons. In preparation for the Early Childhood Program in the fall, Library Assistant
Mayra Turchiano conducted two pre-assessments of young students from the waiting
list, and more students will be scheduled as soon as volunteer tutors confirm their
participation for the fall. Thirteen tutors have been confirmed so far.
12. During the month of July, four special programs were presented at the Learning Center
as part of the 2018 Summer Reading Adventure. These educational and entertaining
programs included Mad Science, Pacific Animal Productions and Buster Balloon. The
three programs were well attended by 162 children and adults at the Learning Center
and were also held at Cole and Dove libraries, where they drew similarly large crowds.
During the week of July 23, 17 teens enjoyed their own Summer Reading events,
including a musical scavenger hunt, karaoke night and DJing workshop.

13. Lead Librarian Darin Williamson and Librarian Bridget Lopez went to the La Costa
Paloma community BBQ and promoted the Summer Reading Adventure and shared
information about library programs and services with 52 residents. They also met staff
from a variety of local organizations including Rady Children's Hospital, Interfaith
Community Services, MiraCosta Community College, Orangetheory Fitness and more. La
Costa Paloma is a multifamily affordable housing community located near Dove Library.
14. Library staff took the Books To Go book bike to the State Street Farmer's Market on
July 25 and helped attendees check out children's books and cookbooks. In four hours,
staff spoke with over 250 people and gave away 70 paperback books while promoting
library events and services focusing on the Summer Reading Adventure and the
Exploration HUB. Also in July, Books To Go staff visited the beach, the Carlsbad train
station and a needlepoint class at the Senior Center.
