Approved 3-0-1-1 (Trustee Pearson abstain and Trustee Hinman absent) PUBLIC COMMENTS: None. MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS: The Board received the monthly library report for May 2018. CITY HALL PROJECT UPDATE: Assistant City Manager Gary Barberio provided a PowerPoint presentation on the City Hall project which included a project overview, timeline, potential sites, and opportunities for public involvement. GRANT -FUNDED GOPRO FUSION 360° CAMERA DEMONSTRATION: Reference Librarian Maile McKeon presented background on the California State Library Libraries Illuminated grant project and delivered a live demonstration of the GoPro Fusion 360° camera, used to teach patrons to experience, film, edit and upload 360° virtual reality video, with an emphasis on digital storytelling. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Pizzuto briefed the Board on a variety of topics: current recruitments and new hires; the Summer Reading Adventure; City Council's approval of the City's operating budget; the Arts & Culture Master Plan that will be returning to city council for approval; progress on the Dove Library Page 2 of 2 Library Board of Trustees Minutes of the June 20, 2018 Meeting Cafe lease; the completion of the Dove library festoon lighting project and other courtyard improvements; and upcoming dates for board training, library events and city activities. FOUNDATION REPORT: Representative Hulsart reported on the upcoming Sept. 15 "Night at the Library" gala celebration and reminded everyone of the upcoming TGIF Concerts in the Park. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Representative Hulsart advised the Friends annual meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 28 at 7 p.m. NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Board Liaison Marguerite Kealy summarized recent and upcoming programs and events. Membership was reported at 338 members currently. LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: None. ADJOURNMENT: By proper motion (DeForest/Pearson) and vote the meeting was adjourned at 6:05 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Megan VanZandt Senior Office Specialist ITEM #5 Monthly LIBRARY Reports for MAY 2018 Systemwide ... 1. The Library & Cultural Arts Department kicked off its initiative, focused on developing staff and succession planning with the Centre for Organization Effectiveness. Over the next two years, the Centre will dedicate a three -person team to assist the department in this work. The first efforts are focused on capturing the knowledge of employees who are about to retire or transition into new roles. 2. On May 4, Library & Cultural Arts Department staff members celebrated and honored the significant years of service of 33 part-time employees, with two employees marking 20 years of part-time service to the community. The event, held on May the Fourth, was appropriately Star Wars themed. The annual celebration was hosted by the department's Staff Engagement and Appreciation Committee. 3. On May 23, the Business Systems team hosted more than 30 library professionals from around Southern California for a SirsiDynix user group seminar in the Schulman Auditorium. SirsiDynix provides integrated library system technology, which Carlsbad and other libraries use to track the collection, manage library users and how they check out materials and provide a wide variety of library use statistics. The seminar provided an opportunity for public and academic libraries to come together to preview the latest technology from SirsiDynix. The Business Systems team also made a presentation sharing how they use SirsiDynix's analytics tool and Blue Cloud Analytics to automate usage reporting and create custom dashboards in order to visualize data. 4. Teen volunteer opportunities for the Summer Reading Adventure filled up quickly. Applications received reached the libraries capacity before the May 22 application deadline. Orientation sessions are now being held at all three locations for our 350 teen volunteers. 5. Long-time Library Assistant Fred Vrabel retired at the end of May after 18 years working in the Dove Library Children's Division. Beginning on June 18, Brandon Tiongison will be promoted from his position as the part-time library technician in Children's Services at the Georgina Cole Library, where he has worked since May 2015, to fill this vacancy. 6. In May, Library Collections & Technical Services staff completed the process of rearranging and updating call numbers for more than 13,000 adult music CDs. The three -and -a -half - month project reflected input from a patron survey and several focus groups on how to simplify the arrangement and labeling of music CDs to make them easier to locate when browsing the shelves and searching the online library catalog. Team members also learned that the California Library Association approved their proposal to present the project methodology and lessons learned at the association's 2018 annual conference in Santa Clara this November. 1 Monthly Library Reports for May 2018 7. The library partnered with the Carlsbad Police Department to offer four sessions of Run, Hide, Fight active shooter response training to department staff. Each of the training sessions in May included a presentation on police response to such situations and shared guidelines from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for responding to active shooter situations. The training concluded with a walkthrough of the respective library facility to apply the principles to the work environment. CCL, Dove Lane ... 8. Library staff worked with IT to successfully upgrade all patron computers that are located at the Dove Library from May 22 to 24. The coordinated effort allowed for minimal impact on public computer access during the upgrade. The Library Learning Center and the Cole Library patron computers will be upgraded the week of June 11, with the goal to have all patron computers upgraded before the start of the Summer Reading Adventure program. 9. The library's six -part "Good Life Lecture Series" concluded on May 15 with a discussion from Carlsbad resident Dr. Bart Billings on "The Psychology of How We Eat." Attendance was strong for the series, averaging around 80 people per lecture on topics such as getting quality sleep, caring for aging parents and eating for longevity. One participant shared this comment on a post -event survey: "I was changed completely by the lecture by Dr. Billings. He took me one step closer to having hope for the future..." 10. On May 26, Dove Library hosted the last installment of the "Your Library Means Business" series. The series provides the community with resources to start, build and sustain a successful business. The program, "Going Beyond Strategy - Finding Clarity in the Midst of Chaos," included discussion of the secrets behind setbacks, confusion, and work -stress and how to alleviate them without the typical tools and strategies others offer. Attendees were invited to share their issues, blocks or questions to address interactively with the group, in order to leave with immediate solutions. 11. Dove Children's held several well -attended events in May. In honor of Asian Pacific Heritage Month, the Polynesian Paradise Dancers presented an after -school program of music and dance on May 1 attended by 86 children and adults. Storytime Theater attendees were treated to a return visit from Pammy's Petting Zoo on May 4, with more than 200 children and adults interacting with a variety of animals in the Children's Garden. Georgina Cole ... 12. On May 13, Cole Library hosted a jazz concert featuring San Francisco -based trio Charged Particles, which has performed more than 20 years nationally and internationally. More than 60 audience members, including a handful of moms celebrating their Mother's Day, enjoyed a performance featuring jazz standards and original compositions. 2 Monthly Library Reports for May 2018 13. Cole Children's most popular May programs included the May 1 "Star Wars Celebration Day" where children dressed up, read stories and created a related craft. May 15 featured "National Chocolate Chip Day," where children learned about this special day through stories, could sample different types of chocolate chip cookies and made their own treats. Learning Center ... 14. Learning Center staff members Lizeth Simonson and Mayra Turchiano attended the MAAC Head Start Preschool Graduation, and Celebration held at Holiday Park on May 9. They received an award recognizing the support that the Library Learning Center provides the students and their families throughout the school year. 15. The Spanish Book club met on May 22 to discuss the book Entre las sombras del Sueno Americano/My (Underground) American Dream by Julissa Arce. This true story detailing the struggle, heartbreak and achievements of an undocumented immigrant, who became a Wall Street executive, inspired a lively discussion and the members shared their own experiences. Outreach and Community Connections ... 16. Library staff rode the Books To Go book bike to the grand opening of the city's Pine Avenue Park Community Center on May 19 and spread the word about library services, with an emphasis on the upcoming Summer Reading Adventure. Additionally, the Community Center's new indoor mural was unveiled at the grand opening, featuring historic photos of Carlsbad, half of which came from the library's Carlsbad History Collection. Many staff and community members have expressed positive comments on,the mural. 17. A Books To Go schedule of events from May through August was created. Additional staff members have been trained on mobile checkout, bike safety and conducting the outreach events. The Books To Go webpage and social media posts are promoting future events. On May 23, Books To Go visited the_Farmer's Market and successfully used the MiFi hotspot and mobile checkout to circulate cookbooks, gardening books, and children's books. In four hours, staff spoke with over 200 people and gave away 50 paperback books while promoting library events and services, focusing on the Summer Reading Adventure and the Exploration HUB. 18.
