ITEM #5
Monthly LIBRARY Reports
for
MAY 2018
Systemwide ...
1. The Library & Cultural Arts Department kicked off its initiative, focused on developing staff
and succession planning with the Centre for Organization Effectiveness. Over the next two
years, the Centre will dedicate a three -person team to assist the department in this work.
The first efforts are focused on capturing the knowledge of employees who are about to
retire or transition into new roles.
2. On May 4, Library & Cultural Arts Department staff members celebrated and honored the
significant years of service of 33 part-time employees, with two employees marking 20 years
of part-time service to the community. The event, held on May the Fourth, was
appropriately Star Wars themed. The annual celebration was hosted by the department's
Staff Engagement and Appreciation Committee.
3. On May 23, the Business Systems team hosted more than 30 library professionals from
around Southern California for a SirsiDynix user group seminar in the Schulman Auditorium.
SirsiDynix provides integrated library system technology, which Carlsbad and other libraries
use to track the collection, manage library users and how they check out materials and
provide a wide variety of library use statistics. The seminar provided an opportunity for
public and academic libraries to come together to preview the latest technology from
SirsiDynix. The Business Systems team also made a presentation sharing how they use
SirsiDynix's analytics tool and Blue Cloud Analytics to automate usage reporting and create
custom dashboards in order to visualize data.
4. Teen volunteer opportunities for the Summer Reading Adventure filled up quickly.
Applications received reached the libraries capacity before the May 22 application deadline.
Orientation sessions are now being held at all three locations for our 350 teen volunteers.
5. Long-time Library Assistant Fred Vrabel retired at the end of May after 18 years working in
the Dove Library Children's Division. Beginning on June 18, Brandon Tiongison will be
promoted from his position as the part-time library technician in Children's Services at the
Georgina Cole Library, where he has worked since May 2015, to fill this vacancy.
6. In May, Library Collections & Technical Services staff completed the process of rearranging
and updating call numbers for more than 13,000 adult music CDs. The three -and -a -half -
month project reflected input from a patron survey and several focus groups on how to
simplify the arrangement and labeling of music CDs to make them easier to locate when
browsing the shelves and searching the online library catalog. Team members also learned
that the California Library Association approved their proposal to present the project
methodology and lessons learned at the association's 2018 annual conference in Santa Clara
this November.

Hide, Fight active shooter response training to department staff. Each of the training

situations. The training concluded with a walkthrough of the respective library facility to
apply the principles to the work environment.

computers upgraded before the start of the Summer Reading Adventure program.
9. The library's six -part "Good Life Lecture Series" concluded on May 15 with a discussion from
Carlsbad resident Dr. Bart Billings on "The Psychology of How We Eat." Attendance was
strong for the series, averaging around 80 people per lecture on topics such as getting
quality sleep, caring for aging parents and eating for longevity. One participant shared this
comment on a post -event survey: "I was changed completely by the lecture by Dr. Billings.
He took me one step closer to having hope for the future..."

Chaos," included discussion of the secrets behind setbacks, confusion, and work -stress and
how to alleviate them without the typical tools and strategies others offer. Attendees were
invited to share their issues, blocks or questions to address interactively with the group, in
order to leave with immediate solutions.
11. Dove Children's held several well -attended events in May. In honor of Asian Pacific Heritage
Month, the Polynesian Paradise Dancers presented an after -school program of music and
dance on May 1 attended by 86 children and adults. Storytime Theater attendees were
