Monthly LIBRARY Reports for JUNE 2018 ITEM #5 1. The all-new Summer Reading Adventure, with the theme "Libraries Rock," launched on June 18 with pre-registration starting June 11. Summer reading participants now use our partner website called Beanstack, carlsb,adlibrary.beanstack.org, to record their reading and can opt-in to receive book recommendations, information about upcoming library programs and other announGements from the library. The youth programs (Little Ones - Teens) combine oral reading reports from the old program with new, time-based reading trackeq in Beanstack. Youth participants earn reading rewards every time they reach a reading milestone for their age group. This time-based approach supports recommended average daily reading times to better combat summer reading loss. Youth may also earn weekly reporting rewards by reporting to teen volunteers. The adult program has seen a significant increase this year, with more than 900 adult participants as of the second week in June, compared to 2017's 156 total participants. 2. Library Business Systems staff and city I.T. staff worked as a team to replace all the public computers at the Dove and Cole libraries and the Library Learning Center with minimal impact to the public. The 152 new machines have a smaller footprint, are more powerful and have the latest Windows 10 operating system. In addition to new hardware, each machine received an updated software image customized for its intended user (children, adults, genealogy, etc.), desktop icons were arranged for ease of use and each computer was integrated with patron automated sign up and printing, serving the community better. 3. There were five hands-on training sessions in June to introduce staff to the new mobile print functionality, which will allow patrons to print on library printers from their personal electronic device from within the library. Mobile print is integrated with the library's existing patron printing process, and patrons will use their library card number to log in. It is compatible with most laptops, smartphones, and tablets and since it is web-based, it does not require patrons to download an app in order to print. The mobile print service is now functioning in a "soft launch" at all library locations, with an official launch after the Summer Reading Adventure has ended. 4. Senior Librarian Erin Peak and Lead Librarian Jacqui Petri attended the American Library Association annual conference in New Orleans in late June and will share with co- workers what they learned at future "brown bag" sessions. They attended workshops on topics such as creating library advocates among business leaders in the community, leading staff "from the side" (as a colleague rather than a supervisor) and building a streaming media collection. They also networked with library staff from all over the country and learned about several new and expanded services and products. 1 Monthly Library Reports for June 2018 CCL, Dove Lane ... 5. The final class of a four-week course, Create 360° VR Video, was held in the Exploration HUB. This program is funded by the California State Library's Libraries Illuminated Grant, which combines technology upgrades and high-speed broadband to deliver new services to patrons. Additionally, the library has developed a partnership with GoPro, a Carlsbad based company, who has worked with library staff to learn to use their Fusion 360° camera. The next four-week course began July 10, and future_ courses are being offered in August, September, and October. 6. On June 2, New York Times bestselling author, actress and comedian Annabelle Gurwitch (TBS' Dinner and a Movie) led an engaging conversation about her latest work, Wherever You Go, There They Are. As a follow up to the swap and planting, a volunteer master gardener led a kitchen garden basics workshop, helping patrons start their own kitchen garden. 8. Twenty-three people attended the Beginner and Refresher Genealogy Class on June 23. This program was recently revamped, with two new volunteer instructors updating the class syllabus to reflect the growing interest in DNA and numerous options for keeping genealogy records electronically. Attendees also learned about the library's collection, accessing the library's subscription databases and on line catalog, a short history of the partnership between the city and the North San Diego County Genealogical So\ciety, and a description of the educational genealogy programs offered through this partnership. Learning Center ... 9. The Literacy Services Division hosted its annual celebration on June 3. This event recognizes learners for their accomplishments and volunteers for their dedication.
