ITEM #5
1. Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane and Georgina Cole Library served as mail ballot drop-
off locations from Oct. 29 through Election Day on Nov. 6. Reporting from the Registrar
of Voters show an impressive 14,991 ballots were dropped off at the two Carlsbad
locations. The two libraries also served as polling locations and had strong attendance
throughout Election Day.
2. Eight library staff members attended the California Library Association Conference Nov.
8 to 11 in Santa Clara. The theme for the four-day conference was No Barriers, No Walls,
Access for All.
3. Community Outreach Supervisor Carrie Scott joined Library & Cultural Arts Director
Heather Pizzuto on a panel about Career Online High School. Librarian Kim Tubbs-

inclusive volunteer program, makerspaces and more.
4. In November, Library staff performed configuration and testing for the new streaming
movies and music resources Kanopy and Alexander Street to ensure the best possible
experience for library patrons. Staff learned more about the services during training
sessions, and many tried out the services to be able to assist patrons prior to the
December public launch.
5. Senior Librarians Barbara Chung, Sarah Dana and Marsha Weeks were recipients of the
2018 City of Carlsbad Peer Recognition Award, having been nominated by their fellow
staff members, or "peers." They attended the Nov. 7 reception hosted by City Manager
Scott Chadwick where they, along with four other city recipients, received their award.
The Peer Recognition Award recipients also received a city proclamation at the Nov. 13
City Council meeting.
6. The annual ln-N-Out Burger Cover-to-Cover Club library reading program began Oct. 6
and ended Nov. 17. Children between the ages of 4 to 12 could earn a certificate good
toward a free hamburger for every five books read, up to three certificates. This year,
the program was managed in Beanstack, the same on line system used for the Summer
Reading Adventure. At all three libraries, 744 children signed up for the program earning
a total of 1,347 certificates.

7. On Nov. 2, Carlsbad City Library hosted a Meet the Author event in the Schulman
Auditorium, featuring an afternoon with Chef & Author Isabel Cruz. Cruz's new
cookbook, The Latin Table, showcases easy-to-make recipes that are also health-
conscious and flavorful. Sixty attendees discussed cooking and the restaurant world and
snacked on some of Cruz's special dishes.
8. Mindful Parents and Teens were held in the Schulman Auditorium on Nov. 6 with
presenter Dr. Erik Conklin. The 72 adults and teens who attended participated in various
activities and discussions to encourage mindfulness, decrease stress and increase
resiliency.
9. On Nov. 18, Librarian Maile McKean gave a Cinema Club presentation to 89 patrons in
the Schulman Auditorium before the screening of Citizen Kane. She provided
background on Orson Welles and details about the production of Citizen Kane, including
information about screenwriting, set design and filming.
10. During November, Exploration HUB staff taught a series of four two-hour Virtual Reality
Video classes to six patrons who attended all classes. These classes are made possible by
the Libraries Illuminated grant provided by the California State Library. The first class
included information on the GoPro Fusion camera and then a field trip to capture
footage with the cameras. In the second class, the six patrons were taught how to stitch
footage using the Fusion Studio software. The third class involved the patrons editing
footage using Final Cut Pro, and the final class was the viewing party where patrons
received cardboard VR viewers to take home.
11. The Children's Division held a special program in honor of Native American History
Month on Nov. 13 for nearly 70 children and adults. In an interesting and informative
program, a presenter from the Barona Band of Mission Indians shared a collection of
artifacts and explained the cultural significance of each one. Another popular November
program was the annual Thanksgiving Family Fun program on Nov. 21, which attracted
141 children and adults for stories, songs, coloring, and a craft.

12. Popular Genealogy programs in November included the Intermediate Genealogy Class

Society President Jeanette Shiel's presentation on immigration and naturalization
records attended by 70 people. On Nov. 27, 50 people attended the program to hear
Randy Seaver's case study on his success researching his ancestors only using online

13. Six teens attended the new Game on, Teens program on Nov. 10 to play USAopoly's
Thanos Rising, where teens learned to play the game as their favorite Marvel character.
Game on, Teens is a pilot program modeled after the successful Library Got Game
series, and staff will determine the success rate by interest and attendance.
14. The Children's Division held two Veterans Day events. A Nov. 5 tween program featured
Veterans Day with a Camp Pendleton Marine, attended by two Marines. The Marines
read Veteran's Day by Marlene Brill and shared examples of their equipment and
colorfully described their training and why they became Marines. They wore their dress
blues, and the 14 tweens were so captivated that they barely had time to create their
craft, a patriotically decorated jar. On Nov. 13 library staff read Veterans Day themed
books and children created a thank you card to give to a veteran in their life as well as a
card to be delivered to the Camp Pendleton Marines. Sixteen people attended the Nov.
13 program.
Learn ing Center ...
15. Recent improvements at the Library Learning Center include the installation of new
automatic sliding front doors to the facility, installed on Nov. 15 and 16. Several patrons
have shared enthusiastic and positive comments with staff regarding the upgrade since
it is now easier to enter with a stroller or walker. The Bilingual Services collection has
also been reorganized, and the Spanish and English language materials are now shelved
separately but adjacent to each other, instead of being interfiled. These changes make it
easier for patrons to access English or Spanish language materials and find new books.
Library staff members have also been "weeding" the collection and removing older
books to make more room for new material.
16. In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, Learning Center staff hosted a
Dreamcatcher craft program for teens on Nov. 16. Thirteen teens learned about the
dreamcatcher origin legend, its cultural significance to some Native American tribes,
socialized and created their own dreamcatcher.
Outreach and Community Connections ...
17. At the Carlsbad Village Faire on Nov. 4, library staff had a very successful outing handing
out books, bags and more. Upon arrival, they had an instant crowd of more than 10
people who admired the book bike and approved of the library's presence at the Village
Faire. Staff gave out nearly all their free books and other promotional material.
18. The Books To Go team visited the Village Faire on Nov. 4; connected with 30 people at
the Carlsbad Village Association's Village Voices meeting, Carlsbad Coaster station, and
the grassy area at Robert Frazee State Beach on Nov. 6; and visited the beach again on
Nov. 9 and interacted with 37 people, giving away eight books and checking out three.

Pilgrim Children's Center and delivered two separate storytimes to a total of four
preschool classes and 60 students. Staff have also contacted Pilgrim, Kruger House's
preschool, LePort Montessori and Sanderling Waldorf and plan on including the schools
in their future routes on the second Thursday of every month.
19. On Nov. 8, Librarian Missy Shaw presented a storytime program to 50 kindergartners at
St. Patrick Catholic School. The students were studying fairy tales, so Missy shared
different ve rsions of The Three Little Pigs and brought several examples of fairy tales
from the library's collection. The children enjoyed The Three Ninja Pigs by Corey Rosen
Schwartz as their final selection.
20. Four Magnolia Elementary School classes and one Poinsettia Elementary School class
visited the library throughout November as part of the City Stuff program for a tour of
the children's area, the book return conveyer belt {also known as 11Book Bot") and the
Carlsbad History collection area.

Women's Group on Nov. 17. Division staff provided a tour of the genealogy collection,

High Tech High School on Nov. 29. The students were working on assignments to write a
historical children's book in the Colonial era or create a new school library. Each student
