Approved 5-0-0-0. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None. MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS: The board received the monthly library report for November 2018. STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM OVERVIEW: ITEM #3 Training Coordinator Emily Bruce provided the board with an overview of the department's training and development program, and the training coordinator's role in hiring part time staff, coordinating and developing relevant and useful staff training and planning staff development opportunities. Page 2 of 2 Library Board of Trustees Minutes of the Dec. 19, 2018 Meeting TALENT DEVELOPMENT AND SUCCESSION PLANNING INITIATIVE UPDATE: Director Heather Pizzuto provided the board with an update on completed activities, the current focus and future goals regarding the department's work with The Centre for Organization Effectiveness on talent development and succession planning. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Pizzuto briefed the board on a variety of topics: progress on the Cafe; information on Museum Month; city attorney direction regarding boards and commissions work plans; the final printed copy of the Arts & Culture Master Plan (distributed to Trustees in this meeting); and upcoming holiday hours and closures. FOUNDATION REPORT: Representative Larson advised the Foundation is working toward conducting a financial audit to facilitate future grant pursuit. Also, next year's "Night at the Library" gala has been set for Sept. 21 and there will be a spring event sometime in May to formally announce and market the gala. FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Representative Hulsart advised the Holiday Boutique was a success and the Friend's Bookstores will be closed from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2 for the holidays. NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Board Liaison Sue Madsen summarized recent and upcoming programs and events. LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: None. Monthly LIBRARY Reports for November 2018 ITEM #5 1. Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane and Georgina Cole Library served as mail ballot drop- off locations from Oct. 29 through Election Day on Nov. 6. Reporting from the Registrar of Voters show an impressive 14,991 ballots were dropped off at the two Carlsbad locations. The two libraries also served as polling locations and had strong attendance throughout Election Day. 2. Eight library staff members attended the California Library Association Conference Nov. 8 to 11 in Santa Clara. The theme for the four-day conference was No Barriers, No Walls, Access for All. 3. Community Outreach Supervisor Carrie Scott joined Library & Cultural Arts Director Heather Pizzuto on a panel about Career Online High School. Librarian Kim Tubbs- Nelson presented a poster session on the music CD reclassification project to share data and best practices with other library professionals. Staff attended professional development workshops on topics such as homelessness in the library, developing an inclusive volunteer program, makerspaces and more. 4. In November, Library staff performed configuration and testing for the new streaming movies and music resources Kanopy and Alexander Street to ensure the best possible experience for library patrons. Staff learned more about the services during training sessions, and many tried out the services to be able to assist patrons prior to the December public launch. 5. Senior Librarians Barbara Chung, Sarah Dana and Marsha Weeks were recipients of the 2018 City of Carlsbad Peer Recognition Award, having been nominated by their fellow staff members, or "peers." They attended the Nov. 7 reception hosted by City Manager Scott Chadwick where they, along with four other city recipients, received their award. The Peer Recognition Award recipients also received a city proclamation at the Nov. 13 City Council meeting. 6. The annual ln-N-Out Burger Cover-to-Cover Club library reading program began Oct. 6 and ended Nov. 17. Children between the ages of 4 to 12 could earn a certificate good toward a free hamburger for every five books read, up to three certificates. This year, the program was managed in Beanstack, the same on line system used for the Summer Reading Adventure. At all three libraries, 744 children signed up for the program earning a total of 1,347 certificates. 1 Monthly Library Reports for November 2018 CCL, Dove Lane ... 7. On Nov. 2, Carlsbad City Library hosted a Meet the Author event in the Schulman Auditorium, featuring an afternoon with Chef & Author Isabel Cruz. Cruz's new cookbook, The Latin Table, showcases easy-to-make recipes that are also health- conscious and flavorful. Sixty attendees discussed cooking and the restaurant world and snacked on some of Cruz's special dishes. 8. Mindful Parents and Teens were held in the Schulman Auditorium on Nov. 6 with presenter Dr. Erik Conklin. The 72 adults and teens who attended participated in various activities and discussions to encourage mindfulness, decrease stress and increase resiliency. 9. On Nov. 18, Librarian Maile McKean gave a Cinema Club presentation to 89 patrons in the Schulman Auditorium before the screening of Citizen Kane. She provided background on Orson Welles and details about the production of Citizen Kane, including information about screenwriting, set design and filming. 10. During November, Exploration HUB staff taught a series of four two-hour Virtual Reality Video classes to six patrons who attended all classes. These classes are made possible by the Libraries Illuminated grant provided by the California State Library. The first class included information on the GoPro Fusion camera and then a field trip to capture footage with the cameras. In the second class, the six patrons were taught how to stitch footage using the Fusion Studio software. The third class involved the patrons editing footage using Final Cut Pro, and the final class was the viewing party where patrons received cardboard VR viewers to take home. 11. The Children's Division held a special program in honor of Native American History Month on Nov. 13 for nearly 70 children and adults. In an interesting and informative program, a presenter from the Barona Band of Mission Indians shared a collection of artifacts and explained the cultural significance of each one. Another popular November program was the annual Thanksgiving Family Fun program on Nov. 21, which attracted 141 children and adults for stories, songs, coloring, and a craft. Georgina Cole ... 12. Popular Genealogy programs in November included the Intermediate Genealogy Class on Nov. 13 at the city's Faraday Center featuring North San Diego County Genealogical Society President Jeanette Shiel's presentation on immigration and naturalization records attended by 70 people. On Nov. 27, 50 people attended the program to hear Randy Seaver's case study on his success researching his ancestors only using online records. The presentation included publicity for the many databases the library offers to library cardholders. 2 Monthly Library Reports for November 2018 13. Six teens attended the new Game on, Teens program on Nov. 10 to play USAopoly's Thanos Rising, where teens learned to play the game as their favorite Marvel character. Game on, Teens is a pilot program modeled after the successful Library Got Game series, and staff will determine the success rate by interest and attendance. 14. The Children's Division held two Veterans Day events. A Nov. 5 tween program featured Veterans Day with a Camp Pendleton Marine, attended by two Marines. The Marines read Veteran's Day by Marlene Brill and shared examples of their equipment and colorfully described their training and why they became Marines. They wore their dress blues, and the 14 tweens were so captivated that they barely had time to create their craft, a patriotically decorated jar. On Nov. 13 library staff read Veterans Day themed books and children created a thank you card to give to a veteran in their life as well as a card to be delivered to the Camp Pendleton Marines. Sixteen people attended the Nov. 13 program. Learn ing Center ... 15. Recent improvements at the Library Learning Center include the installation of new automatic sliding front doors to the facility, installed on Nov. 15 and 16. Several patrons have shared enthusiastic and positive comments with staff regarding the upgrade since it is now easier to enter with a stroller or walker. The Bilingual Services collection has also been reorganized, and the Spanish and English language materials are now shelved separately but adjacent to each other, instead of being interfiled. These changes make it easier for patrons to access English or Spanish language materials and find new books. Library staff members have also been "weeding" the collection and removing older books to make more room for new material. 16. In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, Learning Center staff hosted a Dreamcatcher craft program for teens on Nov. 16. Thirteen teens learned about the dreamcatcher origin legend, its cultural significance to some Native American tribes, socialized and created their own dreamcatcher. Outreach and Community Connections ... 17. At the Carlsbad Village Faire on Nov. 4, library staff had a very successful outing handing out books, bags and more. Upon arrival, they had an instant crowd of more than 10 people who admired the book bike and approved of the library's presence at the Village Faire. Staff gave out nearly all their free books and other promotional material. 18. The Books To Go team visited the Village Faire on Nov. 4; connected with 30 people at the Carlsbad Village Association's Village Voices meeting, Carlsbad Coaster station, and the grassy area at Robert Frazee State Beach on Nov. 6; and visited the beach again on Nov. 9 and interacted with 37 people, giving away eight books and checking out three. 3 Monthly Library Reports for November 2018 The team also began visiting local preschools accessible by the book bike. Staff visited Pilgrim Children's Center and delivered two separate storytimes to a total of four preschool classes and 60 students. Staff have also contacted Pilgrim, Kruger House's preschool, LePort Montessori and Sanderling Waldorf and plan on including the schools in their future routes on the second Thursday of every month. 19. On Nov. 8, Librarian Missy Shaw presented a storytime program to 50 kindergartners at St. Patrick Catholic School. The students were studying fairy tales, so Missy shared different ve rsions of The Three Little Pigs and brought several examples of fairy tales from the library's collection. The children enjoyed The Three Ninja Pigs by Corey Rosen Schwartz as their final selection. 20. Four Magnolia Elementary School classes and one Poinsettia Elementary School class visited the library throughout November as part of the City Stuff program for a tour of the children's area, the book return conveyer belt {also known as 11Book Bot") and the Carlsbad History collection area. 21. The Genealogy and Local History Division hosted a visit from the Rancho Bernardo Women's Group on Nov. 17. Division staff provided a tour of the genealogy collection, an overview of genealogy programs and were available to provide one-on-one research assistance. Several new library cards were issued to members. 22. Librarian Ashleigh Hvinden gave a tour to 43 eleventh graders and three teachers from High Tech High School on Nov. 29. The students were working on assignments to write a historical children's book in the Colonial era or create a new school library.
