By proper motion, the minutes of the Library Board of Trustees meeting of

The board received the monthly library report for December 2018.

Library & Cultural Arts Director Heather Pizzuto provided the board with an overview of the
department's security and patron privacy practices, advised the board of the library's
commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment, and reviewed security practices
including staff training, environmental security and crime prevention through environmental
design. Privacy laws, policies and the roles and responsibilities of the Library Board and cross-
departmental administrative oversight were also presented.

FY 2019-20 BUDGET POLICIES AND TIMELINES:
Senior Management Analyst Fiona Everett provided the board with information on the
FY 2019-20 budget policies and timelines.
SEMI-ANNUAL LIBRARY DONATION REPORT:
Page 2 of 2
Director Pizzuto briefed the board on donations received for the period of July to December
2018.
On a minute motion by Trustee Parsons, seconded by Trustee Pearson, the Board directed staff
to return with a future agenda item to discuss the Falkenstein Estate gift.
CAFE UPDATE:
Senior Management Everett provided the board with an update on the Carlsbad City Library
cafe space.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Director Pizzuto reminded the board of the City Attorney's Dec. 18 memo advising boards and
commissions to submit an annual work plan and stated this would be a prioritized item for
upcoming board discussion and action. She also advised the board of changes to meeting
agendas and packets, reflecting the implementation of uniform policies and procedures related
to boards and commissions as referenced in the City Attorney's memo.
FOUNDATION REPORT:
Representative Larson advised the Foundation has established the level of endowment funding
available for the department's use during FY 2019-20 and planning for the upcoming "Night at
the Library" gala on Sept. 21.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT:
Representative Hulsart thanked staff and advised that this year's Holiday Boutique was the
most successful yet.
NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT:
Board Liaison Sue Madsen summarized recent and upcoming programs and events.
Membership was reported at 227 members currently.

Monthly LIBRARY Reports

December 2018
ITEM #5
1. On Dec. 3, Carlsbad City Library launched to the public free streaming services for indie
and classic movies through Kanopy and high-quality music through Alexander Street.
Alexander Street Music features over 670,000 tracks from music genres such as classical,
jazz, World and American roots. Kanopy features thousands of documentaries, indie and
classic films, educational children's videos, and more. The services are off to a strong
start. In December, Alexander Street use trends reflected patron focus group input and
historical checkout patterns for Carlsbad's music CD collection with a high interest in
classical and jazz tracks. For Kanopy in December, 831 hours of videos were viewed,
with Academy Award-winner Lady Bird the most popular film.
2. The library announced that the 2019 Carlsbad Reads Together theme will celebrate the
200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's classic Frankenstein with Frankenstein-related events
throughout March. New York Times best-selling author and Carlsbad library patron
Kiersten White will discuss and sign her book The Dark Descent of Elizabeth
Frankenstein, written in honor of Frankenstein's anniversary, at Dove Library on March
10 and Cole Library March 14. More events will be announced in February.
3. All library locations hosted holiday programs for youth. Programs during the month
included a Winter Story Craft at Cole on Dec. 4, featuring stories and a snow-making
STEM activity. On Dec. 6 at the Learning Center, children and adults made ornaments
for the library Christmas tree and to take home. On Dec. 18, children enjoyed stories
and made gifts at the Gift of Giving Story Craft at Cole Library, while Carlsbad High
School Carolers performed holiday songs at Dove Library. The always popular Visit with
Santa drew nearly 170 children and parents to Cole Library and Library Learning Center
on Dec. 20. Teens had their own events Dec. 20 and 21, with a screening of The
Nightmare Before Christmas at Dove Library and a celebration of the winter solstice at
the Learning Center.

4. Additional children's holiday programs at Dove included a special holiday decorating
program on Dec. 4, with 113 children and adults making ornaments for the library's
Christmas tree and to take home, and decorating cookies. The perennially popular "Very
Beary Nutcracker" marionette show on Dec. 7 drew more than 160 children and adults
who were entertained by the very talented Kathy Felker and her handmade
marionettes.

5. Mindful Reflective Leadership was held in the Schulman Auditorium on Dec. 8 with
presenter Dr. Erik Conklin. The 30 adults who attended participated in various activities
and discussions to encourage full presence and reflection in their leadership skills.
6. More than 200 people filled the Schulman Auditorium on Dec. 9 for a holiday
performance by acclaimed San Diego musician, researcher and photographer Yale Strom
and Hot Pstromi, who performed a mix of klezmer and new Jewish music and shared the
history of the songs.

7. Nearly 80 adults and children enjoyed a holiday concert at Cole Library on Dec. 2
featuring harpist Leah Panos performing holiday tunes mixed with some popular
favorites. Leah enlightened the audience by sharing the history of the well-known
classics she performed.

8. On Dec. 6, as part of the Learning Center's annual holiday concert, adults and children
. enjoyed the music of Mariachi Divas. The trio delighted the audience with festive
mariachi music that included traditional holiday songs, music from the Disney movie
Coco and Latin music. Despite heavy rain, 65 people attended the event.
9. The annual Writer to Writer Challenge invites adult learners in California Library Literacy
Services programs to read a book and write a letter to the author about how the book
impacted their lives. One hundred fourteen letters were received for the 2018
challenge, far surpassing the previous record of 91 entries. Learning Center literary
learners frequently enter the contest and are among the winners. The California State
Library has been in conversation with Community Outreach Supervisor Carrie Scott, who
often assists with coordinating the program, about expanding the Writer to Writer
program for 2019-2020.

10. Bilingual Services staff members participated in the Holiday Tree Lighting Event
sponsored by the City of Carlsbad and the Carlsbad Evening Rotary Club in the Village of
Carlsbad on Dec. 2. Ninety-six children enjoyed listening to a story and making a holiday
craft.
11. On Dec. 4, a library team visited Carlsbad's La Posada de Guadalupe men's homeless
shelter to gain additional insight into the needs of the residents and the facility. Over
the past year, the staff has been performing outreach and book lending services to the
men living at La Posada. Staff spoke with a La Posada case worker, who shared the

history of the program and brainstormed future partnership ideas. The case worker
praised the library for providing a space that allows La Posada's residents to conduct
business such as researching jobs and accessing the internet and email. In addition, the
case worker shared that for some residents, simply walking into the library provides
them with a sense of normalcy and engaging in small talk, and taking on responsibility
for books and other materials helps them to begin to regain confidence and self-esteem.
12. On Dec. 6, Librarian Missy Shaw presented a story time program focused on winter
animals to tie into the curriculum of 55 kindergartners at St. Patrick Catholic School. She
also brought several examples of books from the collection on winter animals.
13. On Dec. 13, Lead Librarian Darin Williamson and Librarian Missy Shaw teamed up to
provide preschool story times for three local preschools that are accessible to the Books
To Go book bike. They visited LePort Montessori School, Pilgrim Children's Center and
the Kruger House and delivered a variety of stories, songs and fingerplays to 50
preschoolers.
14. The Books To Go team had another busy month in addition to their preschool visits.
They visited the (rafter's Showcase in the Village on Dec. 1 and spoke with 110 people
and handed out 60 free books; visited the Rotary Tree Lighting Dec. 2 and connected
with 150 people and gave away over 200 items; attended Pets on Parade in the Village
on Dec. 9 and spoke with 18 people; connected with 40 people at the beach on Dec. 14;
and visited the Carlsbad Senior Center, presenting about library services to 130 seniors
on Dec. 21 and visiting one-on-one with seniors on Dec. 31.
