Systemwide ...
Monthly LIBRARY Report
for
July 2019
ITEM #5
1. This year's annual Summer Reading Adventure, "A Universe of Stories," had strong
participation at all three libraries in July. Systemwide participation for all ages from July
1-31 included 1,137 sign-ups, more than a million minutes read and 727 book reviews
contributed. One of the most popular children's programs was Mad Science, where
scientists entertained audiences by performing experiments with amazing results.
Everyone's favorite experiment was watching a member of the audience fly with just a
plank and a hairdryer. Approximately 450 people attended the Mad Science
performances at all three locations. The Summer Reading Adventure concludes Aug. 11.
2. On July 1, the library launched Flipster®, its new digital magazine service replacing
RBDigital. The service, provided to us through the Serra Cooperative Library System, is
free with a library card and provides access to eMagazines such as Forbes, People
(English and Spanish editions), Time, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated and more. Flipster
had a strong launch, with nearly 1,500 eMagazines checked out in July.
CCL, Dove Lane ...
3. On July 3, Chapters cafe at Dove Library had its soft opening. The menu features coffee,
tea, smoothies, sandwiches, pastries, grab and go snacks, drinks for kids, and more.
Patrons (and library staff) have been enjoying Chapter's offerings. The cafe also provides
catering for on-site events. Chapter's grand opening celebration is planned for Aug. 10.
4. Teens enjoyed a variety of fun Summer Reading Adventure programs in July. Teen
Talent Shows on July 11 highlighted singers, with 14 teens performing for 120
enthusiastic audience members. The July 25 event showcased dancers, with eight teens
performing for 45 audience members. The first-place winners of each of the three talent
shows will perform at the TGIF Concert in the Parks on Aug. 16. On July 18, 17 teens
attended an ice cream and movie event featuring an overview of teen services and
screening of Captain Marvel. And on July 30, 15 teens enjoyed an outer space-themed
escape room activity, working in teams to follow clues and solve a mystery during a set
amount of time.
5. On July 20, four acclaimed authors spoke about and signed their latest books for an
audience of 60 in the Schulman Auditorium. Attendees were invited to escape to Iceland
with Tory Bilski as she shared her personal story of riding wild horses every summer in
Iceland, journey to Malibu with Janna King in her latest novel, hear about writing an
edge-of-your-seat thriller from Kaira Rouda, and curl up in a cozy bookstore with the
always charming and entertaining Abbi Waxman.

Georgina Cole ...
6. Kids enjoyed a variety of outer space-themed Summer Reading Adventures in July. The
July 2 program featured astronaut training, and staff read the books Astronaut
Handbook and Living in Space to the 48 attendees. At their first station, the kids
learned that astronauts must exercise to keep in shape in space and explored how
gravity affects the body. At the second station, the kids discovered how hard it is to work
in astronaut gear by trying to pick up small Lego pieces with cooking mittens. Kids
created their own International Space Station patches and put together a jet pack at the
final two stations.
7. The Thursday Afternoon Book Club had its third consecutive month with 18 patrons in
attendance, a large turnout for our book clubs. The book club discussed, If the Creek
Don't Rise, a fictional book set in poverty-stricken Appalachia's during the 1970s, which
made for a great conversation.
8. On July 24, 27 patrons participated in the Grow Your Garden crop swap to exchange
plants and leave with newly potted succulents. Master Gardener Jano Nightingale led a
workshop on herb gardens and propagating herbs for 12 attendees.
Learning Center ...
9. VOX talking books will soon be added to the literacy and general Learning Center
collections. VOX books are the first audiobooks that have a permanently attached
reader in a hardcover book. These books will support literacy-level adults and their
children who wish to share books, in addition to providing a new format which makes
literacy and learning fun for all community members.
10. On July 1, the San Diego County Office of Education-Migrant Program re-started their
annual summer meetings at the Learning Center with school-age children enrolled in
their summer classes . Migrant Program staff provides instruction in English and math to
15 students twice a week for two hours each session. The students and their families
signed up for the Summer Reading Adventure and attended the special July programs.
11. The Read and Play Summer Club participants continued reading the book Midnight on
the Moon from the popular Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne. Fifteen
children are enjoying the book so much that it's a challenge for them to put it down
after each chapter. The group enjoyed activities that complement the book, including
bingo, a puzzle and questions game, and Jeopardy. Reading Midnight on the Moon has
encouraged the participants to learn more about outer space and the solar system.
12. At the end of July, Principal Librarian Viktor Sjoberg left his position with Carlsbad City
Library to take on a new role at Glendale Public Library. Library staff are working with
the city's Human Resources staff to launch a recruitment.

Outreach and Community Connections ...
13. The Books To Go team had an active July, visiting eight different locations. Staff visited
Flicks at the Fountain, outdoor movie nights hosted by the Carlsbad Village Association,
on July 11 and 18. They spoke with nearly 100 people total and promoted the Summer
Reading Adventure and other services while also giving away many children's books. On
July 12, the staff visited the beach and spoke with nearly 40 people. On July 16, staff
visited the Carlsbad Senior Center and connected with 28 attendees. The attendees
were pleased library staff had brought them popular mystery books based on their
requests. On July 18, staff visited three local preschools and provided storytimes for
nearly 86 preschoolers. On July 24, staff rode the Book Bike to the farmer's market and
interacted with 312 people, processed seven library card applications and handed out
more than 100 books and other giveaways.
14. On July 5, 19 and 26, library members staffed an outreach table at TGIF Concerts in the
Parks events. Staff talked to more than 200 people total about library services and
programs, especially the Summer Reading Adventure and gave out "Libraries Rock!"
book bags as well as library event calendars and other promotional material.
15. On July 23, Library Assistant Susan Burke accompanied a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer on
her route from the Carlsbad Senior Center to the homes of nine recipients to inform them
of the library's homebound program to deliver library books and materials to residents
unable to leave their homes due to medical reasons. Two people expressed interest in
signing up for the program.

OeceaSed Name: Georgina Dando Cole
Georgina Dando Cole, who startad the Carlsbad Library In 1956 and was the prime mover in making It
a city library in 1967, died Sunday in Beaver In her native stale of Pennsylvania, where she had retired
in 1982.
When Mrs. Cole look over lhe library, It consisted of three shelves, of books In a former church building
shared by City Hali and !he Police Department One of Mrs. Cole's favorite s!a!emen!s, quoted In
interviews, was that when someone entered the building, "we did not know if the person was looking for
a book or being booked." The tiny library, which was part of !he county library system, became the city
library on Elm Avenue in 1967. It also became one of the most popular and most-used librartes in the
state In communities of 25,000 lo 50,000, surpassed only by the Beverly HIiis Public Llbrarf.
By 1981, more than 56 percent of Carlsbad's 40,000 residents carried library cards. according lo
California Division of Libraries statistics.
A major reason for the library popularity was the creative and innovative approach or the feisty director.
Far ahead of most libraries. she was offering programs that brought children from miles around. Then
came concerts, seminars, cooking demonstrations and travel programs for the parents who broug11t the
children. She and !he library staff -to whom she gave major credit -secured mos! programs al no cost
lo the library. When the community agreed that !he library should pull out of the county system and
become a city facili!y, the stale, under the Public Library Act of 1963, decreed t11at it must be part of a
"library system." Mrs. Cole immedialely became Instrumental in forming the Sarra Regional Library
System, which included San Dieg o, National City and Oceanside, as well as Carlsbad.
The library was her major, but far from her only, interest. For some time, at night, she was librarian at
the oceanside-Carlsbad community College, which became MiraCos!a College.
She also was active in PTA, which made her an honorary life member In 1965. She held various posts
in !he Carlsbad Woman's Club, which named her Woman of !he Year in 1974. She served on the board
and was a pas! president of the Cartsbad Girls Club. She was active in !he Chamber of Commerce,
American Association of University Women, Business and Professional Women's Clul1, Historical
Society and Friends of the Library. She also was Involved in North County projects and organizations.
including Country Friends, the North County Concert Association and the Santa Margarita Historical
Sociely.
She was named Carlsbad Citizen of the Year In 1978.
A graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, she was children's librarian In the Flint Mich., library
before moving here with her husband, Richard G. Cole, in 1953.
Graveside services were held Thursday al Beaver Cemetery. Mrs. Cole's survivors Include her
husband; a daughter and son. Molly Vaughn of Pocatello, Idaho, and Rlcl1ard Cole-Dando of Encinitas;
and six grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Beaver library, 100 College Ave .. Beaver, Pa. 15009.
