APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
By proper motion, the minutes of the Library Board of Trustees meeting of
Aug. 28, 2019 were approved. Approved 4-0-1-0 (with McBride not yet arrived)
PUBLIC COMMENTS:
None.
MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS:
The board received the monthly library report for Aug. 2019.
INTRODUCTION OF NEW TRUSTEE:
New trustee, Gina McBride was introduced upon arrival after Ethics training. She provided
highlights of her past professional and volunteer experience.
SUMMER READING ADVENTURE FINAL REPORT:
Senior Librarian (Children's Services) Barbara Chung updated the trustees on the Summer
Reading Adventure. She also mentioned the new youth library cards and Baby's First Visit
promotion.

ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE-CHAIR:
Art Larson was elected Chair and Beth Hulsart was elected Vice-Chair unanimously. (5-0-0-0)
APPOINTMENT OF A REPRESENTATIVE TO THE CARLSBAD LIBRARY & ARTS FOUNDATION:
Gina McBride was unanimously elected representative to the Carlsbad Library & Arts
Foundation (5-0-0-0)
Dl°RECTOR'S REPORT:
Director Pizzuto briefed the board on a variety of topics: recruitments at the Learning Center
and implementation of Saturday hours, Schulman Auditorium sound upgrade, Technology
Vision and Strategic Staffing Request for Proposals, repairs and possible upgrade to the assisted
listening system and upcoming events.
FOUNDATION REPORT:
Representative Larson discussed preliminary feedback from the CLAF Gala held Sept. 21.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT:
No action was taken at the last Friends meeting due to lack of quorum.
NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT:
Board Liaison Sue Madsen summarized recent and upcoming programs and events.
LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Trustees praised the Gala. Commissioners thanked Trustee DeForest for his service as chair.

Monthly LIBRARY Report
for
August 2019

The library's Summer Reading Adventure, A Universe of Stories, ended on Aug. 11. More than
4,200 readers of all ages, from babies to adults, were registered for the program. Participants
read for a total of 1.9 million minutes, a 10% increase from last year. Additionally, more than
18,000 reading rewards were earned, readers wrote 1,455 book reviews in the program, and
youth participants earned nearly 8,000 books provided by the Friends of the Library. Aug. 5 was
the final performance of the Summer Reading Adventure and featured John Abrams' Animal
Magic. More than 600 people total enjoyed the magic and live exotic pets at the four shows
across the three library locations, with two performances at Dove due to popular demand.
Lead Librarian Andrea Hilliard and Librarians Maile McKean, Ashleigh Hvinden and Madelyn
Horton applied for and were selected to participate as a team in the Embedded Evaluation in
Libraries Institute, a nine-month mentoring program sponsored by the California Library
Association and funded in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The Carlsbad librarians competed with other teams to earn this opportunity, which commences
with a Kickoff Institute in Sacramento in early November and concludes in June with a two-day
Wrap-Up Institute in southern California. Multiple workshops over the nine-month interval will
offer a deep dive into data analysis and its application to evaluating library programs. Teams
will focus on evaluation knowledge and skills, embedding evaluation in our library, and
developing a network of like-minded peers throughout the state.
Library staff stuffed 75 book bags in preparation for the launch of the new program Baby's First
Visit to the Library. This ongoing program encourages new parents to bring their baby to any
Carlsbad City Library location to receive a free bag filled with information about library
programs and services for all ages, a board book for their baby and facts about the importance
of reading to babies.
The annual Kindergarten Kick-off programs were held at Dove and Cole Aug. 15 and Aug. 22
respectively. Children listened to stories about the first day of kindergarten and were
encouraged to test their kindergarten readiness with fun crafts. There was a total of 38
participants at both programs.
Teens enjoyed two Marvel Comic-themed Escape Room events in August. Twenty-three teens
total worked in teams to solve puzzles and riddles, "escape" and earn a reward. The Aug. 7
event was held at Cole Library, and the Aug. 30 event was at Dove Library.
CCL, Dove Lane ...
The last of three teen talent shows hosted by the library took place on Aug. 8 in the Schulman
Auditorium. More than 10 teens performed for an enthusiastic audience. On Aug. 6, six
performers from the July Teen Talent Show had an opportunity to perform on Channel 8

On Aug. 3, negrly 150 people attended a talk in the Schulman Auditorium led by television
personality, author and attorney, Kenyatta Berry, best known for her role as a host on PBS'
Genealogy Roadshow. Berry spoke about and signed her book, The Family Tree Toolkit, and
provided recommendations for those interested in researching their family as well as tips on
using storytelling to enhance family stories. The event was supported by the North San Diego
County Genealogical Society, Friends of the Carlsbad Library and Carlsbad Library and Arts
Foundation. Three members of the Genealogy division staffed a table to promote the library's
genealogical resources and answer patron questions.
On Aug. 26, the library hosted a concert featuring award-winning musicians Los Pinguos. The
musicians came to the United States from .Buenos Aires, Argentina, and performed a mixture of
Latin rhythms, reggae, cumbia and rock. A full house of nearly 200 enjoyed the upbeat concert,
dancing in the auditorium as the concert came to an end.
The Good Life Travel Lectures were held three Tuesday afternoons in August on the topics Wine
Regions of France, Online Travel Planning Made Easy and Art & Architecture of Northern Spain:
Visual Treasures Along the Camino. More than 300 people total attended the three lectures.

Library staff organized the swap tables where succulents and seeds were provided at the Aug.
24 Grow Your Garden program. There were 23 attendees, and 10 people planted their egg
cartons with seeds provided by the library.
On Aug. 27, 78 people attended the Genealogy Program Meeting in the Council Chamber for
Jane Neff Rollins' presentation on documenting deaths without death records.
Learning Center ...
Community Outreach Supervisor Lizeth Simonson collaborated with the city's Spanish-speaking_
outreach consultant to survey and engage Spanish-speaking families to participate in the
conversations related to the Community Vision that the city conducts every 10 years. Thirteen
parents were interviewed at the Learning Center, and four library users provided their phone
number and agreed to be interviewed by phone.
The Summer Youth Literacy Program concluded the week of Aug. 5. Six students finished the
program, and five have completed their post-assessment, with all five showing improvements.
Ten students will remain in the Early Childhood Literacy Program for the fall session which is set
to start the week of Sept. 9 with 12 tutor/student teams.

Outreach and Community Connections ...
f On Aug. 2, 9 and 16, library staff hosted an outreach table at TGIF Concerts in the Parks events.
Staff talked to nearly 500 people total about library services and programs and gave out
information and fun giveaways.
On Aug. 14, library staff met with Jefferson Elementary School Principal Carla Bos. The group
talked about collaboration and outreach opportunities at the school. Staff then attended the
first and second day of registration for the school on Aug. 19 and 20: They talked to nearly 200
parents about children's program and services, promoted Homework Zone, and the various
reading clubs for children and tweens.
During the week of Aug. 19, teams of library staff attended registration events for Calavera
Hills, Aviara Oaks Middle School and Valley Middle School. In total, they met with more than
300 students and parents, signed up 25 individuals for library cards, gave away free books,
spoke about teen programs, and highlighted the online resources the library provides.
The Books To Go team had an active August, visiting more than 10 locations with the book bike.
Staff visited their usual locations at the Carlsbad Senior Center, Villages Voices meeting, beach
route, LePort preschool storytime, and Farmer's Market. In addition, they also attended the
Carlsbad Music Festival, annual Art in the Village, Flicks at the Fountain, and Valley Middle and
Magnolia Elementary Schools. In total, the team spoke with nearly 650 people about library
services, programs and eResources.
On Aug. 27, Library Assistant Mayra Turchiano visited the MAAC Project preschool program
located at the Laurel Tree Apartments and shared information about the library services and
children's program with 17 parents.
On Aug. 30, Librarian Missy Shaw gave a tour to a group of 11 students from Le Port School.
They listened to a story about library etiquette, toured the library, visited the book bot, and
completed a scavenger hunt.
