Spring Into Reading, the online, all-ages reading program, launched on March 17 and had its
deadline extended from April 30 to May 31 to encourage further participation during the
library’s closure. For the month of April, 109 people registered for the program, reading for
46,389 minutes. Since the program launched, 272 people have registered for the program with
a total of 73,341 minutes read.
On April 13, the library launched a new patron engagement instant messaging platform called
LibChat, which allows patrons to communicate with onsite and remote library staff via instant
messaging. LibChat is accessible through the library’s online catalog, website and the Ask Us
knowledge base. Staff answered more than 50 patron questions via live chat during April.
The new “Enjoy Now” collection was launched on April 14. Enjoy Now features eBook and
eAudiobook copies available on a first come, first served basis using the Libby or Overdrive app.
The collection contains popular titles that have a seven-day lending period, don’t require a hold
and can’t be renewed. The goal is to give library patrons quick access to titles in high demand.
Library Circulation staff worked in a lead role in the City of Carlsbad’s Sew2Care project, a
volunteer-based initiative where community members sew protective face coverings for our
most vulnerable community groups. More than 200 Sew2Care volunteers have handmade and
donated more than 1,000 face coverings.
The library held its first virtual concert on Thursday, April 23. Approximately 80 people
attended the 30-minute concert featuring jazz pianist Danny Green, dubbed Live From My
Living Room and streamed via the library’s Facebook Live. Since the live performance, the video
has been viewed more than 1,500 times. The library’s Live From My Living Room concert series
featuring a variety of artists will continue May 10, May 23 and June 18.
During the library’s public closure, many library staff members have participated in virtual
training offered by the city, library and other organizations. Staff completed more than 2,600
hours of training during the month of April in everything from using Zoom to customer service
to leadership. CCL, Dove Lane …

Earth Day themed songs and stories in English and Spanish streamed live on the library’s
Facebook page. The virtual programs were well-received, with a combined total of over 600
views, and continue live each Wednesday at 10 a.m. in May. The storytimes are also recorded

Literacy Services staff sent all active volunteer tutors a survey to determine whether they were
in touch with their learners and their level of interest in distance learning resources.
Approximately a third, 21 pairs, are in touch with their learner and interested in alternative
teaching strategies. Twelve tutors volunteered more than 52 hours in April as they continue to
work with their learners remotely. Seven learners and five tutors are waiting for a partner
because no matches can be made during the closure. Literacy Services has been sending weekly
emails to stay in touch with tutors and learners.
On April 21, the Spanish Book Club met virtually using the Zoom platform. Retired library
Community Outreach Supervisor Lizeth Simonson moderated the group’s discussion. Eleven
book club members discussed the Carlsbad Reads Together book selection Educacion by Tara
Westover. One of the most relevant subjects for the group was the author’s perseverance in
pursuing her education despite her adversity. Overall, the group found Westover’s memoir an
inspiring story of self-discovery and perseverance. Book clubs usually based at Cole at Dove will
begin virtual gatherings in early May.
Outreach and Community Connections …
In mid-April, the library launched a Spanish-language version of its Library@Home web page,
