BEACH AND TREE COMMISSION March 26 The regular meeting of the Parks, Recreation, Beach & Tree Commission was held March 26, 195^, at 7:30 P. M. in the City Hall, with the follow- ing present: Mr. Oldham, Mrs. Christiansen, Mrs. Felt, Ben Acuna, Dr. Gllnes, and Mrs. Stuart. Minutes of January 26th were read and approved. Minutes for February meeting will be submitted at next meeting by Mrs. Christiansen. A report on the Palisade tree planting project was made, in effect that 50 trees are now ready for planting, waiting for weather conditions. Jerry McClellan has the list of where they are to go and the amount of money to be collected for each. It was reported by Mrs. Felt that some In the district are becoming dissatisfied with the choice. A report was made by Mrs. Stuart that the Helms Bakery, represented by Mr. Nlcklin, had failed to complete their promise of cleaning up tree trimming and landscaping as promised upon getting permission to cut trees. Mr. Oldham said he would contact them. It was reported that Mr. Lang had given an estimate of 1500,00 on cutting three trees at the corner of State and Grand. Dr. Gllnes asked the board to give thought to securing the site south of the school across Chestnut for a park. There are about 2^ acres in the plot. Dr. Gllnes will report later on owners and other pertinent facts. The Department of Public Works of San Diego County request that dig- ging into the banks on the Beach be stopped. A motion was made by Mrs. Christiansen that this Commission sponsor a clean-up week before the Spring Holiday. The dates are May 21, 22 and 23. Publicity was to be given the newspapers at once in regard to clean- ing lots and all home sites, starting May 1st, with prizes to be given for the greatest improvement In lot cleaning and tree trimming. A motion was made by Mrs. Felt and seconded by Mrs. Christiansen that Mr. Oldham be authorized to present our plan to the Chamber of Commerce and ask them to underwrite the project. A letter was read from Mr. Frank Luokle regarding waste on the beach. A letter was read from Don Huffman in answer to one written by Jerry McClellan, stating he would be here Easter and desiring salary and time of - 1 - employment as life guard. Mr. Huffman will contact Joe Trotter and Irwin Hedstrom for Interview. Dr. Glines will talk to George Meese, who is now out of the Coast Guard, to see if he will be available for Easter week, with $250*.00 per month salary. Memo read from City Council regarding a life tower on the beach. Mr. Gardner of the Recreation Department of San Diego County stated they would give us the tower in lieu of one month's pay for a life guard. Motion made by Mrs. Christiansen that we accept the exchange from the County and hire a guard from April 10th through 18th. Seconded by Dr. Glines.
