RECREATION COMMISSION
June 18, 1956
The meeting was called to order at 7:35 P.M. by Chairman
Fred Huntington. Present besides the Chairman were Commissioners
Felt, Stuart, Christiansen, Nielson and City Manager Nelson,
The minutes of the regular meeting of May 17, 1956 were
read and approved with minor correction.
Secretary read letter from Mrs. Adela Aguliar, requesting
trimming of Eucalyptus Trees in front of her property at 3092
Jefferson Street. The letter was referred to the Tree Committee
for inspection and recommendations.
Chairman Huntington reviewed the committee assignments as follows:
Recreation - Huntington
McClellan
Beach Christiansen
McClellan
Park Pedley
Nielson
Tree Felt, Stuart and Pedley
Chairman Huntington reported he had contacted the Cole Cabinet
Shop regarding the table which was to have been constructed by the
shop and had been advised that work on it has not been started and
the cost is estimated at $60.00 instead of the original estimate
received of |35»00, After discussion, Commissioners McClellan and
Nielson were instructed to look into the matter and make whatever
decision will be nscessary to expedite construction of the tables
so that they may be put in use for the summer season at Holiday Park.
The Commission discussed the need for a set of rules and regulations
for the Park and Commissioner Stuart was instructed to present a copy
of the State Park rules at the next meeting for the CommiSvSionfs review.
Commissioner McClellan reported the recommendations which were
made by the Chamber of Commerce at their regular meeting. The group
has proposed the erection of two signs, one at Elm Avenue and one at
the San Diego Gas and Electric Company area, approximately 4x6 feet,
with wording "Help Keep Your Beach Clean", Thank You," It was also
proposed to install a fire ring, and log boom to restrain the cars from
the beach, at the Gas and Electric Beach. After discussion, it was
decided that a letter should be forwarded to the Chamber stating that
the Commission recognizes these problems but pointing out that, due to
the lack of durability, plus the cost of materials, we do not feel the
expenditure could be justified at this time, also, calling their attention
to the signs which have recently been erected in the Elm Street area,
directing bathers to the State Beach. Will also advise them that the
City has no jurisdiction over the Gas and Electric Company area of the
beach and, therefore, could not install the log boom or the fire rings.
Trash cans will be redistributed so that they will be located at the
points of greatest usage.
It was also reported by Comm. McClellan that a Scout Patrol,
under supervision of Leader Ralph Walton will make periodic tours along
the beach to assist in the maintenance of the City beaches. The Commission
asked that the Chamber of Commerce also be notified of the Commission^
appreciation for their part in the beach clean-up campaign.
•^t was announced that "the regular meetings of the Commission
will be held on the third Monday of each month.
There being no further business to come before the Commission,
the meeting was declared adjourned at 9:02 P,M.
