July 16, 1956
Meeting called to order at 7:35 P» M. by Chairman Huntington. Present
besides the Chairman were Commissioners McClellan, Pedley, Nielsen, Felt,
Park Superintendent Westree. Absent, Commissioners •
Guests present: Mrs. Parker, Mrs. Barbara Smith, Mrs. Robirds, Mr. Ted
Roberts.
Minutes of the last meeting were read by Comm. Pedley and approved.
Chairman Huntington read a letter from Ted Roberts suggesting a supervised
recreation program for children aged 7 to 11 years. Chairman Huntington
reported that a check on cost indicated that a full-time director could
be employed for $30.00 per week. After discussion, during which it was
brought out that the Carlsbad Junior Women's Club favors such a program,
Comm. Pedley moved that the Recreation Committee be directed to meet with
representatives of interested organizations to organize a program of rec-
reation for children from ages 7 to 11 years, for the balance of the sum-
mer; that the City Council be requested to approve an additional budget
item for the Park & Recreation Commission in the amount of $300.00 to em-
ploy a Recreation Director to supervise and co-ordinate the program; and
that the City Council be requested to engage the services of such a Di-
rector as recommended by the Recreation Committee. Seconded by Comm.
Nielsen and passed.
Comm. McClellan moved that the Junior Women's Club be reimbursed in the
amount of $3«76, paid out by them for decorations in Holiday Park for the
City Picnic on July 15, 1956. Seconded and carried.
Mr. Westree gave a report on the City Anniversary celebration, stating
that an estimated 375 persons attended.
Mr. Westree recommended that the land intended for parking lot use be lev-
elled for playing ball.
Comm* McClellan suggested that signs be put on the Freeway to attract
tourists to the Park for picnicking.
Comm. McClellan moved that the Committee accept the Tree Committee's recom-
mendations regarding trees at Adams and Chestnut. Seconded and carried.
The secretary was directed to notify Mr. Aguilar that the trees will be
trimmed.
Mr. Nielsen suggested a letter be sent to all service clubs in regard to the
purchase of tables and benches, and barbecue pit. Letter on file.
It was suggested fch&t a letter be sent Buzz Garland expressing appreciation
for the generous publicity in the Journal.
A letter from Maurice Brunache, with check for $55.00 to purchase tables
and benches for Holiday Park, was read.
It was moved by Comm. Pedley, seconded by Comm. McClellan, that a memorandum
be sent to the City Council expressing the extreme distress of the Park &
Recreation Commission over the flagrant destruction of several beautiful
trees on the south side of Elm Avenue, west of Carlsbad Boulevard. This
apparent willful destruction of public property is considered to be of such
a serious nature that the Commission strongly recommends that the City
Council have an investigation made of the incident and cause appropriate
disciplinary action to be taken. Motion carried.
