HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992-02-06; Senior Commission; MinutesMINUTES OF: DATE OF MEETING: TIME OF MEETING: PLACE OF MEETING: CALL TO ORDER: SENIOR COMMISSION February 6, 1992 (Regular Meeting) lr15 p.m. CARLSBAD SENIOR CENTER Cha.irman Heard called the Meeting to order at 1:15 p.m. ROLL CRLL: Present : Commissioners Heard, Chmiel, Van and Zink. Absent : Commissioner Maggio. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE was led by Chairman Heard. MATTERS FROM THE PUBLIC: Joe Johnson, 3300 Belle Lane, stated it has been eight months since lights over the pool tables were requested, and he would like to know why nothing has been done. Sue Spickard stated that this matter has been turned over to the Facilities Department and they are working on it with the architect. She will contact that Department to check on the progress. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On motion by Commissioner Van, the Minutes of the November 7, 1991, Meeting were approved as presented. AYES : Heard, Chmiel, Van and Zink VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION: Sue Spickard reported on the Volunteers' Celebration held at the Raintree Restaurant on November 15, 1991. She said that staff evaluation was that everyone had a good time and the comments were very positive. The cost was $206 more than last year, but considering the amount of work and effort that staff usually puts into this party, they were all very appreciative that it was held someplace else this year. The total cost was $2,301.12, and the Senior Association gave $1,000 to support the party and the volunteers. Ms. Spickard asked for comments from the Commissioners, and said that if the Commission agreed, staff would continue to work with Raintree for the party for 1992. Commissioner Zink commented that this was her first volunteer dinner and she complimented Sue and her staff, as she felt it was a great success. She suggested that the chocolate flowers given to the volunteers could be given to the seniors in a place where they can't get out. This could be as a gift from the volunteers. Commissioner Zink said the Golden Tones were great, and she acknowledged that they donated their time to help make the party a success. Commissioner Van said he worked at the party in the band, and he commented on the system used to get the different tables up to the buffet line. That is always a problem with a large group, and he said that perhaps some kind of game could be played while waiting and the last table to go through the line could get some kind of recognition. February 6, 1992 SENIOR COMMISSION Page 2 Commissioner Chmiel concurred with the comments made, and added that she feels this Center has the best volunteers. She said she didn't mind the wait to eat, as people were enjoying being together and visiting. Don Clifford, 4110 Trieste Drive, stated he enjoyed the party, and that the food and entertainment were excellent. He asked who gets invited to the dinner, and how that is determined; whether by a certain number of volunteer hours or some other criteria. Sue Spickard stated that the Commission is presently reviewing the volunteer program and how the recognition is made and at what level. The volunteers were given a letter at the beginning of this year stating the need to document their hours. Those hours may eventually be used to determine who comes to the party. At the present time, there is no set program with the number of hours. All people are invited who are in a volunteer position designated by the Center. Commissioner Zink recommended that maybe there could be a pin with the number of hours on it, and as a person goes from one stage to another, the pins would be passed from one to another. Chairman Heard expressed regret that his wife and he were out of town and unable to attend the party. to what sort of a program the Center should have with regard to recognizing the volunteers. He said that staff would welcome any comments as ACCEPTANCE OF DONATIONS: ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Chmiel, the Senior commission accepted donations from Home Savings of America, Mr. & Mrs. George Heard, Mr. & Mrs. T. J. Mildner and the First Presbyterian Church. AYES: : Heard, Chmiel, Van and Zink SENIOR CITIZEN TRUST FUND: Sue Spickard reported there is a total of $21,271.00 in the Trust Fund; however, it is not all to be spent. There is $3,000 of that money allocated for the building of the barbecue; approximately $2,000 for the artists in residence programs that has not been billed as yet, leaving $16,271.00 uncommitted. Ms. Spickard stated that Home Savings has suggested that the $500 recently donated by them be used to purchase a ping pong table. This item is a high priority item and Home Savings doesn't want their donation put in with the general donations toward the purchase of a large item. They want a piece of equipment that costs $500. In response to Commission query regarding interest in ping pong, Ms. Spickard stated that over two dozen people indicated an interest. This would be an outdoor table on wheels and one that folds, to enable it to be moved from area to area. There is an area behind the lounge and the art room, and it could be used out in the courtyard. February 6, 1992 SENIOR COMMISSION Page 3 .L Ms. Spickard stated that money is being saved to purchase a video projector for the auditorium to project movies on the large screen. She said that people cannot get into the lounge to watch the movies at this time, as there is not enough room. The projector will cost between $18,000 an $20,000. The City is purchasing one for City Hall, and she stated she would like to wait until that one is installed and see how that one performs. Council Member Nygaard arrived at the meeting and was acknowledged by the Chairman. ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Van, the Senior Commission recommended purchasing a ping pong table and related equipment with the $500 donated by Home Savings, Carlsbad Village Drive Branch. AYES : Heard, Chmiel, Van and Zink SUGGESTION COMMITTEE: Commissioner Van reported on the suggestions given to the Committee, and asked that people sign their suggestions so the Committee can reply to them. The suggestion was made that a sign should be put on the box to remind people to sign the suggestions or complaints. SENIOR COORDINATOR'S REPORT: Sue Spickard stated that staff deserves a pat on the back for getting the exciting programs they have here at the Center. She listed the activities for December and January, and those planned for February. CSAIRl4A"S REPORT: Chairman Heard reported that they are back in the tax business, and he asked everyone present to remind their neighbors that they might be eligible for a particularly beneficial tax refund, which is earned income credit. This is for people still in the work force with an income below $21,000. Commission voted unanimously to accept donations from Home Savings of America, Mr. & Mrs. George Heard, Mr. & Mrs. T.J. Mildner, and the First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside. 2. Motion was unanimously approved thatthe $500 from Home Savings ofAmerica be used to purchase a ping pon able and equipment.
