INSTALLATION OF CARLSBAD SCHOOL PEDIMENT:
Patty Cratty, Staff representative for the Historic Preservation Commission, described the proposed
pediment placement over the entrance to the School District Offices. She gave the history of the
pediment, which was first a part of the Carlsbad School built in 1902. When the school building was
demolished to make way for the present facility, the pediment was removed from the building. Due to
the age and the care in removing it, the pediment was not saved in one piece, but partial wording and
pieces.
Ms. Cratty stated that the Historic Preservation Commission was concerned with the loss of the
historical school and wanted to retain a remembrance. She showed slides of the original school with
the pediment over the doorway and showed the entrance to the School District Offices where the
Commission has recommended placing the pediment.
Samuel Chereskin, a Member of the Historic Preservation Commission, stated that the approximate
cost to restore and place this pediment on the building will be $7,500. Mr. Jim Geiser, a graduate of
the Carlsbad School, is working to raise this $7,500, with $2,000 already having been pledged. .-_

Sue Spickard inquired whether the Unified School District had taken any action on this matter, and
Ms. Cratty stated they had not, but there was no problem. The matter has to go before the City
Council for approval.
In reply to Commission query, Mr. Chereskin stated the pediment is 9 feet long by 30 inches wide.
Commission discussion followed, with the Commissioners feeling that there would be confusion as to
why that sign was over the door of the District Offices, unless there was a plaque available to be read
by everyone explaining the reason for its placement there.
Yvonne Castner, 1550 Sunrise Circle, spoke in favor of placing the pediment over the District Office
entrance, stating it was important to have it where it could not be damaged or subject to vandalism.
ACTION : On motion by Commissioner Whittaker, the Senior Commission recommended
supporting the placement of the pediment over the entrance to the District
School Offices, with the recommendation that a plaque be placed there
explaining the function of why it is there.

GERICO’S: - Acceptance of Donation
Sue Spickard reported that the Gerico’s event did not raise as much money this year as last year, but
it was felt that was due to the state of the economy. The total amount for the event is $3,668.00, all of
which is being donated to the Senior Center. This sum will be deposited into the Senior Center Trust
Account.
ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Whittaker, the Senior Commission accepted a

THIRD YEAR ANNIVERSARY:
Sue Spickard reported that the third anniversary of the Senior Center is approaching in December.

Commissioner Whittaker inquired what was done last year, and Ms. Spickard explained the week-long
celebration that was held. He stated that perhaps a banner displayed in the hallway would be
appropriate.
Commissioner MacEnery feR that there should be some kind of celebration, with perhaps cookies and
cake, which could be donated, if necessary.
Commissioners MacEnery and Whittaker volunteered to serve on a sub-committee to work out the
details of this celebration.
Vice Chairperson Chmiel announced that she had a request from Moe Kimball to discuss the Pledge
of Allegiance to the Flag, and stated she would discuss this with him following the meeting. -

INSTALLATION OF CARLSBAD SCHOOL PEDIMENT AT SENIOR CENTER/CARLSBAD
UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICES
The Carlsbad Historic Preservation Commission is requesting your
consideration of the installation of the Carlsbad School pediment
(frieze) at the Senior Center/Carlsbad Unified School District
Off ices.
The Carlsbad School pediment was originally located above the north
door to the original Pine Street School. When the School was
demolished to make way for the Senior center/Carlsbad School Offices, the pediment was to be taken down and maintained. However, it partially crumbled during the removal process.
With the support of the Historic Preservation Commission, Mr. Jim
Gaiser, is in the process of raising funds to restore the pediment. Using the salvaged historical pieces and sculpting missing parts the pediment will be recast. The Historic Preservation Commission
will be making a recommendation to the City Council that this
recast pediment be placed over the east door at the Senior Center/Carlsbad School Offices. The Commission is requesting your concurrence to this recommendation.
If you would like to discuss the pediment placement, please call
Marje Howard-Jones, Chair of the Historic Preservation Commission
at 729-2054 or Patricia Cratty, staff to the Commission at 438-
1161, extension 4395.
A Commissioner and staff will be happy to attend your meeting on November 5, 1992 to discuss this in detail.
Thanks for your consideration.
