and food were excellent; the music was great for listening or dancing and the fellowship was exceptional.
Chairman Heard promised to attend the party this coming year.
Peggy Savary stated she had photographs she had taken at the Party for anyone wishing to see them.
COMMllTEE REPORTS:
Senior Center Anniversary
Commissioner MacEnery reported the suggested date for the Anniversary Celebration is Tuesday,
December 8. There will be a birthday cake in the foyer, and this will be cut about 12:30 p.m.
Sue Spickard recommended, with the Commission's approval, that there be a cake served in the dining
room for those participating in the noon luncheon, and then another cake outside for anyone who had
not been in the dining room. The consensus of the Commission was to approve this suggestion.
Sucmestion Committee
Sue Spickard gave the update on the Suggestion Committee meeting, stating that two individuals had
suggested charging persons who do not show up after having made a luncheon reservation and not
canceling. According to the Federal guidelines, fees cannot be charged for the meals. However, staff
and volunteers are keeping a list of those people who do not cancel reservations and who habitually
abuse this. Those people will be approached by staff to remind them that they are cheating someone
else out of a luncheon by not canceling their reservations.
The suggestion was made to develop a merchant discount list. Ms. Spickard stated that at the present
time staff does not have the time to do this. The suggestion will be turned over to the Newsletter Editor,
who might be able to compile such a list.
There was a suggestion to have a beginning Tai Chi class. It will be offered after the first of the year;
however, it will depend on the enrollment, as the instructor wants to be certain it is worthwhile.
Ms. Spickard stated the Library needs a dictionary, and Joe Johnson will donate one.
The bridge sticks in the poolroom fall on the floor from the hooks on the wall. Mr. Van and Ms. Spickard
will go to a billiards store on this coming Friday and purchase hooks for underneath the tables.

Suqqestion Committee (Continued)
Ms. Spickard reported that the suggestion had been made to sell bus passes at the Senior Center. The
Center cannot become an agent for all groups, agencies, etc., as suggested, especially when it comes
to handling money. Bus passes can be purchased through the mail, as well as at the Carlsbad
MacDonald Pharmacy on State Street and Grand Avenue.
The City of Carlsbad is negotiating with the company that installed the lights in the Center, and the lounge
is the place that will be repaired first.
A suggestion was made to let everyone sign up two days in advance for lunch. Ms. Spickard stated that
the policy on reservations is set by the City Council and can only be changed by them. The present
policy does give Carlsbad seniors the ability to sign up in advance.
Ms. Spickard stated there was a complaint about it being cold in the dance studio, and she said she is
aware of the problems in that wing of the building. That area is on a separate system and has never
worked correctly. She said that until the problem has been solved, that everyone should dress
accordingly. The repair company will come to the Center to check the system.
Nutrition Proiect Liaison
Commissioner Chmiel reported on a recent meeting, giving the statistics for the meals served with a total
of meals served in September, 2,929, with an average donation of $1.39; Home meals served were 897,
with an average donation of $2.35. In October, 2,874 meals were served, with an average donation of
$1.41 ; home meals 857, with $2.62 donation. There is a balance on hand of $1,661.50. She reported on
topics discussed and the birthday and sympathy cards sent. The Council voted to increase the price for
the dance to $2 beginning in December. The band now has five members, which is one more new
member. The music will continue on the same basis as in the past. Fruit baskets were delivered on
Thanksgiving Day, and there will be a bake sale December 18.
Seniors Association
Commissioner Zink reported that the Seniors Association is meeting every three months, with the next
meeting to be in January, 1993.
SENIOR COORDINATOR'S REPORT:
Sue Spickard reported that November and December are months where senior participation in programs
at the Center is less than usual. She said that trips and programs have not been well-attended, and it
is hoped that it is due to the holidays. The Walkathon sponsored with the Carlsbad Village Center raised
some money and those involved had a good time. The Thanksgiving meal was served on November 25,
1992, and 199 meals were served. Ms. Spickard stated that hopefully it will be the same for Christmas.
She said that Mayor Lewis and his entire family helped serve the meal, with Council Members Kulchin and
Nygaard also serving.
Ms. Spickard stated that the Center was not open on Thanksgiving Day, however, staff and volunteers
delivered a hot dinner to the homebound residents on that day. There were fruit baskets from the
Nutrition Council and a small bouquet of flowers and a place mat made by the local children. The White
Elephant sale cleared $665.1 4. In the future, the bake sale and the craft sale will most likely be separate.
Ms. Spickard listed the activities coming up during the month of December and. stated that the part-time
Management Assistant has been hired and will begin working December 9.
