MEETING OF: SENIOR COMMISSION

CALL TO ORDER:
Chairman Whittaker called the Meeting to order at 1:15 p.m.
ROLL CALL:
Present:
Absent: Commissioner Zink.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE was led by Chairman Whittaker.
Commissioners Whittaker, Chmiel, Van and West.

MATTERS FROM THE PUBLIC:
There were no requests to address the Commission on a non-agenda item.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
On motion by Commissioner West, the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held February 2, 1995, were
approved as presented.

Chairman Whittaker welcomed Commissioner Linwood Van to the Commission.
Commissioner Van stated that Mayor Lewis had told him that applications are needed for the Senior
Commission, and to urge seniors to apply for appointment to the Commission.
Sue Spickard stated there are applications available in the City Clerk's Office and here at the Senior
Center.

Sue Spickard welcomed Linwood Van back to the Commission and said it was nice to have him back.
The dances at the Center are very popular and the Valentine's Dance on February 16, 1995, was enjoyed
by a large crowd. The St. Patrick's dance on March 16 hosted the largest crowd to date. There were 132
"swinging seniors" present with Daniels CableVision filming portions to be shown the next day.
The Tax Assistance Program started in February and is serving approximately 700 people at this time.
Appointments are available Tuesdays and Thursdays and low-income non-seniors can take advantage of
the service on a walk-in or as available basis.
Ms. Spickard stated that better planning has resulted in more successful trips--with most of the trips being
sold out. She recommended that anyone interested in a particular trip sign up quickly to avoid being
disappointed. There was an afternoon trip for a trolley tour of San Diego that was booked full. However,
due to the rain, some of the people did not show up. It did clear up and the tour was very enjoyable for
those who did attend.
Ms. Spickard stated there was a new class entitled "Spanish on the Job", which was designed to assist
people with communicating with domestic help. The class was full, with 22 participants, and everyone felt
the class was excellent. The class was taught by Julie Heard.
- There was a seminar entitled "All About Automatic Teller Machines", and although it was not a large group,
those attending felt they learned a great deal about using ATM cards.
Ms. Spickard said a new exercise class called "Fun and Fitness in the Hawaiian Style" led by Christinia Lee,
started on March 10, with over 20 people registered for the class.
Another popular class was taught by Lucy Thew and taught people how to decorate sweatshirts and T-
shirts with gem-colored stones. Ms. Spickard said some of the shirts turned out very well and have been
seen around the Center.
Ms. Spickard reported on April activities, including a discussion on "One Block Quilts", held today. There
was one man in the group, which surprised some of the ladies.
On Monday, April 10,lO:OO a.m., Peggy Elliott will lead a group discussion examining changing friendships
throughout people's lives.
Ms. Spickard continued, stating that a free seminar on reverse mortgages will be held April 12, at 1O:OO
a.m., in the Senior Center Auditorium. The seminar will be presented by Tony Capozza. She stated that
the company he works for, Vanguard, does not sell reverse mortgages, which should make for a more
objective presentation.
There will be free foot examinations on Wednesday, April 19, with appointments necessary. These can
be made at the Reception Desk.
"San Diego - Past, Present and Future" will be presented by Paullette Lahmer of the Centre City
Development Corporation on April 20 at 1O:OO a.m., in the Auditorium.
There will be a Senior Safari on April 20 to the Lawrence Welk Theatre for lunch and a performance of
"Singing in the Rain".

On Saturday, April 29, trip participants will have to get up early to see the lift-off at the Hot Air Balloon
Festival.
Ms. Spickard stated that May will be the second year the Center has offered a "Showcase for Seniors", with
vendors and other services available to seniors being presented by people purchasing table space to show
their wares. The date is Thursday, May 11 I starting at 1O:OO a.m., and a large crowd is expected.
Acceptance of Donation
ACTION: On motion by Commissioner West the Senior Commission accepted the donation
of $1,000 from the Oceanside Emblem Club.

Ms. Spickard stated that the Emblem Club has donated money to the Center the last two or three years,
and the amount has been $500. They requested that the first $500 be spent for something in the Nutrition
Program for Seniors. Ms. Spickard stated that staff recommended that the second $500 be spent to
purchase emergency food kits for homebound seniors. This would provide those seniors with food for
three days in case of a disaster where outsiders could not reach them. She said the Emblem Club was
thrilled with that recommendation.
COMMllTEE REPORTS:
Suclaestion Committee
Commissioner Van gave the following report:
Suggestion: Please offer Tai Chi classes again - Ruth Linby.
Answer: The Senior Center presently offers several exercise programs. Tai Chi may be
offered, provided a qualified instructor can be found at a reasonable fee and there
is sufficient interest from the seniors,
Suggestion: Offer Yoga Class on Tuesday and Thursday - Gloria Cook.
Answer: There are several exercise classes, and Yoga may be offered, depending upon
having a time frame and an instructor. There is no guarantee that a class will be
offered on specific days.
Suggestion: Allow Braille Institute to place leaflets on the tables - Ruth Cohen.
Answer: No "outside" groups are allowed to place leaflets on the dining room tables.
Braille Institute leaflets could be displayed in the brochure rack near the bulletin
boards in the main hallway.

Suggestion: Vines in patio area are growing into roof tiles and blocking ventilation; and will
potentially cause damage - Joe Johnson.
Answer: Thank you for being so observant and concerned. Facility Maintenance has been
notified.
Nutrition Proiect Liaison
Commissioner Chmiel reported on the congregate meals served in January and February, with 2,785 in
January and 2,383 in February: with an average donation of $1.58 in January and $1.60 in February.
Home meals in January totaled 936, and February 848, with an average donation of $2.62 both months.
The current balance of funds raised through Project Council activities was $2,719.07. These funds are raised from dances, craft and bake sales, etc.
Commissioner Chmiel listed the special events held in January and February, and the business conducted
at the meetings. She stated that Golden Wedding Anniversary Proclamations had been presented to
Florence and Arthur Braun and Betty and Girard Anear.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT:
.- Chairman Whittaker stated he had no report. He thanked the Commissioners and Sue Spickard for all their
work.
ITEMS FOR NEXT AGENDA:
The next Commission meeting will be in June, since there would not be a quorum available for the May
meeting.

Speakers for the patio to be compatible1 with the dining room system

COORDINATORS REPORT
Welcome to Commissioner Linwood Van, it's nice to have you back on
the Team!
The Valentine's Dance February 16 was enjoyed by a large crowd. The
St. Patrick's dance on March 16 hosted the largest crowd to date.
132 swinging Seniors kicked up their heels while Daniels Cablevision, Channel 30, filmed portions of the event.
The Tax Assistance program started in February and is going strong! Volunteer counselors are anticipating assisting approximately 700 people through the program this year.
The Senior Safari trip to see the Palm Springs Follies was sold out. This trip appears to be a very popular excursion for the Seniors.
The March Senior Safari trip to Universal Studios is another popular trip! Once again, it pays to sign up early, this trip was
sold out long before the registration deadline.
The March Saturday afternoon trip to enjoy a trolley tour of San Diego was also booked full. However, due to the rain earlier, not
all who were registered showed up. That was unfortunate, as the skies cleared and the tour was very enjoyable.
!!Spanish on the Job!!, a 12 hour class to assist people in learning
key Spanish phrases to use while working with domestic help was a pleasant surprise. We were uncertain of its popularity. Julie Heard taught the class which was rated llexcellentll by the 22 participants. Those who attended received a certificate noting class completion.
The seminar "All About Automatic Teller Machines11 was attended by a small group. However, those in attendance expressed that they had learned a great deal of helpful information about using ATM cards.
A new exercise class called !'Fun and Fitness in the Hawaiian Style1'
lead by Christinia Lee started on Friday March 10. Over 20 people
have registered for the class which emphasizes gentle and relaxing
exercises for the entire body.
Lucy Thew volunteered her talent teaching 12 people how to decorate sweatshirts and t-shirts with gem colored stones. Everyone was
very pleased with their projects. A few of the newly decorated shirts have been seen around the building since the class.
ON TO APRIL:
How to make "One Block Quiltst1 will be the topic for a discussion at 10 am on April 6 by Pat Wetzel. Pat will teach how to choose fabrics, patterns and the equipment needed to pursue this relaxing hobby.
Monday, April 10 at 10 am, Peggy Elliott will lead a group discussion examining changing friendships throughout people's lives.
I1Is a Reverse Mortgage Right for You?I1 will be the topic of this free seminar presented by Tony Capozza at 10 am on April 12 in the Senior Center Auditorium.
Wednesday, April 19, Dr. Liberman will offer free foot examinations. Appointments are necessary! Make appointments at the reception desk.
"Sari Diego - Past, Present and Future" will be presented by Paullette Lahmer of the Centre City Development Corporation April 20 at 10 am in the Auditorium

May is Older Americans Month and it appears that it is shaping up to be a very active month. We have already sent out invitations to the second annual I1Showcase for SeniorsI1 scheduled for Thursday May 11 beginning at 10 am. Vendors and services that benefit Seniors will be showcased. A large attendance of seniors is anticipated.

PLEASE OFFER TAI CHI CLASSES AGAIN - Ruth Linby The Senior Center presently offers several exercise proqrams. We will consider offering Tai Chi again at a later date. Of course, the success of the program will depend upon having an available time, finding a qualified instructor who will offer the class at a reasonable fee, and interest from the Seniors.
OFFER YOGA CLASS ON TUESDAY AND THURSDAY - Gloria Cook
As stated previously, the Center offers several exercise classes. We will be happy to pursue yoga for the future. Aqain, this is dependant upon interest and having a time frame and instructor. There can be no guarantees that the class will be offered on the suggested days.
ALLOW BRAILLE INSTITUTE TO PLACE LEAFLETS ON THE TABLES - Ruth Cohen We do not allow any lloutsidell group to place leaflets on the dining room tables. If we would allow one, we would have to allow them all. However, we would be happy to display Braille Institutes leaflets in the brochure rack near the bulletin boards in the main
hallway.
