September 7, 1995 SENIOR COMMISSION Page 2 Senior Coordinator's Report (Continued) Ms. Spickard reported the July 13 trip to the Magic Club and Dinner Theater (the hottest new club in Los Angeles), was attended by 30 seniors who thoroughly enjoyed the performance and have had many discussions attempting to find the trick behind the "magic". Ms. Spickard reported on the "Safety on the Highways" presentation and how valuable that information was; and the 7th Annual Ice Cream Social, held July 11. Although it rained in the morning, and there are always glitches, due to the quick thinking of Linwood Van, they were all overcome and a wonderful afternoon of music and fun was enjoyed by over 350 people. The ice cream was again donated by Thrifty Payless, Inc.. Two "interactive" presentations were offered at the end of July: "A Celebration of Movement" on July 20th, and "Put Massage in Your Life". There were two day trips in August, with a packed mini bus. The Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach and a day at the Del Mar Races were both enjoyed by 25 seniors on each trip. Derek, the bus driver, told of a free betting class that the Track Club offers, and that will be researched for inclusion in the trip next year. Ms. Spickard stated that the seminar "The Three Most Common Investment Mistakes" was well attended, and it has been found that the less frequent the seminars are held, the more likely the attendance will increase. The Luau was held August 24, with over 215 seniors attending. Special thanks were given to Marolyn Hile, Terry Talbot and their crew of tireless volunteers, who work very hard at special events. Their hard work is not unnoticed! Ms. Spickard reported on a presentation on August 23, "Cancer Research, Detection, Prevention and Treatment", with everyone attending stating they were pleased they came to hear the hope and progress in cancer research and treatments. Ms. Spickard stated that September is "back to school" month and it is also the beginning of classes at the Senior Center. The exercise, drama and art classes begin again, and there will be new Spinal Fitness classes and beginning and refresher bridge lessons. Also, a new monthly group will meet the fourth Friday of the month at 9:00 a.m. in the Dance Studio. This will be "Video Exploration: Adventures in the Mind", and they will incorporate the use of videos to stimulate discussion. September trips will include the Crystal Cathedral, Fashion Island and Big Bear Lake. September 15 will be Mexican Independence Day, with special treats planned in the dining room. There will be a free hearing test on September 25th. Appointments are very necessary. Ms. Spickard stated it is hoped that the Reception area enclosure will be started in September, but there is a problem with the contractor and his insurance coverage. Ms. Spickard concluded her report stating that the patio chairs are in Los Angeles to be re-covered. Ms. Spickard stated there will be a bake sale some time during the holiday time and a white elephant sale. UTILIZATION OF TRUST FUNDS: Sue Spickard asked the Commissioners how they felt about the facility magnets that had been available since the new Center was built. She said the supply is exhausted and asked whether the Commission wished to have a new supply ordered, Originally, 2,500 magnets were ordered at a cost of $620.00.
