MEETING OF: SENIOR COMMISSION

CALL TO ORDER:
Commissioner Whittaker called the Meeting to order at 1 :15 p.m.
ROLL CALL was taken by Sue Spickard, as follows:
Present: Commissioners Chmiel, Serrin, West, Whittaker and Zink.
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE was led by Chairperson Whittaker.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Chmiel, Minutes of the Regular Meeting
held September 3, 1998, were unanimously approved as presented.
- MATTERS FROM THE PUBLIC
Martha Guida, 2633 Valewood Ave, Carlsbad, stated that the need for hands-on computer
instruction is strongly needed for Seniors. Ms. Gujda requested that the Commission
appoint a committee for the purpose to study the feasibility of raising money or requesitng
a grant to purchase computers for the center.
Patricia Dresselhaus, 2359 Pi0 Pic0 Drive, Carlsbad, encouraged Commission to study the
feasibility of appointing a computer committee. Ms. Dresselhaus stated that she would like
to see a classroom with a dozen computers set up for hands on use for beginners and more
advanced participants. She suggested it may be possible to get funding from Mira Costa
College, grants and local industrial firms for computers, instructors and materials.
Sue Spickard stated that the computer lab is very close to getting started for hands on use
with four computers with printers in place. She explained that the City is in the process of
upgrading and we may be able to get the 486s that will be available and will only have
room for a total of six computers at the present time. Ms. Spickard has met with Valley
Junior High staff and some of their young computer wizards may be willing to staff the
computer lab during open hours to help the seniors and another gentleman is lined up to
give hands on instruction.

ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Zink, Commission unanimously affirmed
acceptance of the Consent Calendar with hem #6, as follows:

VENDING MACHINE - Item #7
ACTION On motion by Commissioner Serrin, Commission unanimously voted to
not have a soda vending machine at the Senior Center
- SUGGESTION COMMITTEE - Item #8
ACTION On motion by Commissioner Chmiel, Commission unanimously voted to have
only staff examine suggestions and report to Commission all
suggestions that are signed.
SENIOR OWNED HOUSING - Item #9
ACTION On motion by Commissioner Serrin, Commission unanimously voted to
have staff invite an Oceanside Senior Commission member to be a guest
speaker at the next Carlsbad Senior Commission meeting.

ADJOURNMENT
By proper motion, the Regular Meeting of October 1, 1998 was adjourned at 2:OO pm, with
a workshop at Heritage Hall on November 5, 1998 at 11 am.
