MANAGERS REPORT
There have been several changes to the regularly long time scheduled programs
at the Center. Those include the Choraleers (Warblers) are no longer utilizing
the Center for practicing. Due to their success, they outgrew the fire code for the
number of people who can occupy that room safely. They are practicing at the
Harding Auditorium. The Senior Center is co-sponsoring them so that they can
utilize the room at no charge. The long time pinochle group and the music
workshop have been disbanded due to the lack of participation in the groups.
We are hoping to fill these spaces with new exciting classes.
Although we have lost our dedicated volunteer Al Roller who oversaw the P.C.
Lab and the P.C. Users group, we have been very lucky to recruit another
computer guru, Alan Hopkins. Those who have attended Alan's classes have
raved about him and we are optimistic that as a result, we will be able to add
more days to the Lab. Marsha and Laura worked very hard to recruit Alan and
are both working to keep the lab up and running so that it can always be at its
maximum of 9 students.
The Introduction to Opera continues to be an overwhelming success. Due to the
large number of people participating, we have moved the program to the
Auditorium. With the increase of participants comes and increase in complaints.
It appears the large screen video projector we purchased when the Center
opened is no longer showing the films and Operas at an acceptable level -
picture isn't as clear and sharp as it should be. Mrs. Ruth Billingsley, and active
Opera participant and benefactor of the Senior Center has suggested that we
apply to the Charles and Ruth Billingsley Foundation for funds to purchase a new
projector. We have approached the Foundation and have been sent the
application package that we hope to submit in the very near future.
The Volunteer Celebration at the La Costa Hotel and Spa has received raves
from all who attended. Many thanks to Kris and Lois for their work to make the
party an overwhelming success. However, due to the high costs of such a party,
staff will be discussing other alternatives with the Commission at a future
meeting.
The Senior Center patio area has been recommended for funding through the
Capital Improvement Budget. The details of this are not clear at this point as the
request was submitted by Public Works. I will keep you advised as this
progresses. In the mean time please, consider how you would recommend the
patio ultimately to look.
The Tax program this year is winding down with the last appointments available
Thursday, April 12. The program has had full days of appointments since it
began in February.
We are discovering in the Dining room that everyone loves a party. No matter
what the menu, if we plan a special event around it, we get a full house. Staff is
working to design more special events in hopes of increasing meal counts.
We had a large crowd on March 29 as San Diego Gas & Electric came by to
exchange light bulbs and halogen floor lamps for more conservation smart
fluorescent products. An S.D.G. & E. representative also spoke to the low-
income seniors about the CARE program, where 15% discounts on monthly
electric bills may be available. Over 500 light bulbs and 80 floor lamps were
exchanged.
The recent presentations on prostrate problems; and chiropractic methods to
good health have generated quite a bit of interest.
The Senior Safari Travel program continues to be a great success. We are
taking a serious look at the program to be sure that we are attracting those
seniors who otherwise would not be able to attend a trip if it were not escorted.
We also do not want to compete with Travel Agents and other programs that
provide this type of service.
April promises to be very exciting. Some of the highlights include the curator of
the world-famous Museum of Making Music will present a lecture on the singers
of the Big Band era on 4/12; The "Goddess" workshop will be given on 4/18;
Radio talk show host Terri Miller will lecture about the detection and treatment of
diabetes on 4/24; and Lynn Diamond from the Carlsbad Police Department will
introduce her dog Scout, a search-and-rescue veteran, who will do an exciting
stunt for the Seniors.
