COMMISSION/STAFF REPORT
1. Commissioner Surridge updated the Commission on the Tri-City Medical Center Advisory
Group meeting held in January. The Tri-City member team supports the least expensive
proposal. Commissioner Surridge asked staff to post information regarding the different
proposals. She also suggested having an informational meeting at the Senior Center to
explain the new bond proposal.
2. Gail Lynn updated the Commission on Senior Center recreation activities and programs.
Among the events for November was the Senior Safari trip to Del Mar "Holiday of Lights"
which ended with dinner at the Brigantine Seafood Restaurant. In addition, a "Meet the
Artist" reception was held for artist photographer L.J. Sullivan at the lobby gallery. People
listened to a jazz guitarist while sipping sparkling apple cider and enjoying cheese and
crackers. Four seminars were held: (1) Q & A Regarding Health Insurance; (2) What to Look
for When Selecting Home Care Services; (3) Fall Prevention and Talking with Older Drivers;
and (4) 2008 Medicare Updates.
The Volunteer Recognition dinner held at the Crossings on February 1, 2008 was a great
success. The Senior Center has 171 volunteers that equates to 11,228 volunteer hours
served and a cost savings of $249,851. Commission thanked staff for doing an outstanding
job.
The Senior Center applied for an award at the annual C.P.R.S. Conference in the health
lifestyle category and received 2nd place for Individual Dietary Planning.
Plans are underway for the Grand Opening of the newly expanded Senior Center and the
relocation of Recreation Administration offices. The opening is planned for March 5, 2008.
3. Jack Risley served Congregate an average of 110 meals per each week day and 673 Home
Meals for the month of January. Some of the special meals planned for February are; Chinese
New Year, Valentine's Day, National Cherry Month, National New England Clam Chowder Day
and National Chocolate Mint Day.
The Annual Bake Sale was sold out as most baked items were home-made, contributing to its
success.
