Chairperson Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Savary, the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held
on February 7, 2008 were approved.

ACTION: On motion by Commissioner Surridge, the Agenda for April 3, 2008
was approved.

CONSENT CALENDAR
The consent calendar was unanimously approved (3-0).
1. AB# 0408-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION)
Accepted and approved and filed the February 7, 2008 Senior Commission Meeting Summary
Report.
2. AB# 0408-2 ACCEPTANCE OF DONATION FROM ESTEE COOPER - (ACTION)
Accepted and approved donation of $200 from Estee Cooper.
3. AB# 0408-3 ACCEPTANCE OF ANONYMOUS DONATION - (ACTION)
Accepted and approved donation of $300 from an anonymous donor.
4. AB# 0408-4 ACCEPTANCE OF DONATION FROM FLORENCE YAMBRICK - (ACTION)
Accepted a donation of $50 from Florence Yambrick.
Senior Commission Minutes
April 3, 2008
COMMISSION/STAFF REPORT
1. Commissioner Surridge updated the Commission on the Tri-City Medical Center Advisory
Group. Surridge reported the Board of Directors decided not to place a bond initiative on the
June primary ballot and at the present time the Board has not selected another date for the
bond issue. Commissioner Surridge handed out a written synopsis of the meeting she
attended to the Commissioners.
Commissioners Nelson and O'Connell attended the "Kick-Off" meeting for Public Visioning
Phase of the General Plan. Commissioner Nelson gave handouts he received at the meeting.
Commissioners Nelson and O'Connell provided the following information regarding possible
senior interest; Transportation, Health and Wellness, Parks and Recreations facilities and
locations for new senior center(s) or branches. Commissioner Nelson asked the Senior
Commission to look over the handout draft proposal and provide any suggestions, ideas or
comments to be considered for possible use in the Community Survey that is planned to be
mailed out to citizens of Carlsbad.
2. Gail Lynn, Recreation Area Manager, reported that the Grand Opening of the expansion and
relocation of the Recreation Administration offices on March 5th was a great success. Lunch
was served to 300 guests and after lunch the ribbon cutting ceremony took place. From 4:00
p.m. to 7:00 p.m. the general public was invited to the Open House. Demonstrations, tours,
music and refreshments were provided. Activities Coordinator, Teresa Dunn, gave an update
on the new programs. Ms. Lynn updated the seniors on up-coming Safari trips and some of
the special events coming up in April.
Commissioner Peggy Savary asked when the Fitness Center would open and if someone
would be monitoring the area. Commissioner Savary indicated specific concerns about fees
and seniors' safety. Ms. Lynn said volunteers will be trained and the Fitness Center will be
opening in approximately one month. Ms. Lynn said she will have a full report next
commission meeting.
The Senior Center applied for an award through C.P.R.S. Aging Services & Activities section
in the Health Lifestyle category and received 2nd place for Individual Dietary Planning Program.
Ms. Lynn brought the award to the commission meeting to show the commissioners.
3. Jack Risley, Recreation Supervisor, stated that Congregate served an average of 110 meals
per each week day and 33 meals per each week day for Home Meals for the month of
February. Some of the special celebrations for February were; Chinese New Year, Valentine's
Day, National Cherry Celebration Month, National New England Clam Chowder Day and
National Chocolate Mint Day. In March 140 seniors celebrated St. Patrick's Day lunch with
traditional corned beef and cabbage. Pete McBride sang Irish tunes to get everyone in the
spirit of the day.
