MEETING OF: Senior Commission
DATE OF MEETING: October 7, 2010
TIME OF MEETING: 3:00 p.m.
PLACE OF MEETING: Senior Center
CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
ROLL CALL was taken by the secretary as follows:
Present: Hopkins, Nelson, O'Connell, Savary and Surridge
Absent: None
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Surridge led the Pledge of Allegiance.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On motion by Commissioner Surridge, the minutes of the August
5, 2010 meeting were unanimously approved.
CONSENT CALENDAR:
1. AGENDA ITEM #1010-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION)
ACTION: On motion by Commissioner O'Connell unanimously
accepted the August 5, 2010 Summary Report.

2. AGENDA ITEM # 1010-2 BEACHES, LAGOONS & OPEN SPACE-
MANAGEMENT (INFO)
Received a presentation from Associate Engineer, Steve Jantz who recently joined
the Parks and Recreation Department as part of the City's realignment. Steve has
worked for the city for the last twenty-five years. Jantz spoke about maintaining our
beaches, lagoons and open space land. Batiquitos lagoon dredging is expected to
begin 2011. The next major project is proposed to begin 2012 to replenish
sand for the beaches.
AGENDA ITEM # 1010-3 SENIOR CENTER REPORT - (ACTION)
ACTION: On motion by Commissioner O'Connell, Commission unanimously
approved the October 7, 2010 Senior Center Report.

Gail Lynn, Recreation Area Manager, reported on upcoming events and gave an
accounting of attendance. One of the highlights for September was the Annual Ice
Cream Social featuring the band Tumbleweed and Christinia Lee's Halau Hula O
Pualani Hawaiian dance class performed at the event.
Fall Prevention Seminar and the Fall Prevention Faire were a highlight in
September. The seminar was presented by Judy Condie, a physical therapist and
Board-Certified Geriatric Specialist. Over 90 seniors were evaluated for "Fall Risk"
at the Fall Prevention Faire.
The Annual KoKo Beach Fundraiser begins in October. Tickets are $5 and will be
sold at the Senior Center reception desk. Ticket stubs will be automatically entered
for a drawing of prizes on October 29 at the Senior Center in the dining room at
noon. KoKo Beach tickets are good throughout the month of October and up to
November 15, 2010.
Gail reminded Commissioners of the Boards and Commission Appreciation Event
on October 14, 2010 held at the Crossings.
Jack Risley, Recreation Supervisor, said the attendance in congregate and
transportation with lunch has gone down but home meals is holding steady.
Jack feels that the numbers will be on the rise again soon.
Visitors from Encinitas and Vista Senior Center's came for lunch and enjoyed
their lunch experience. Attendance for lunch at their senior centers is low and
asked questions how our center has so many people? Despite the numbers going
down it is still much better than most centers.
Jack invited the Senior Commission to attend a celebration honoring Gail as the
"Woman of Distinction" from the Delta Chapter of Women in Leisure Services.
The event includes a Bosses Day Luncheon at the Hourglass Park and Field
House at Miramar College on Tuesday, October 19,2010, 1 1 :00 a.m. to 1 :00 p.m.
FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS:
Commissioner Savary asked that name tags be considered for all who come to the
Senior Center.
