MEETING OF: Senior Commission
DATE OF MEETING: September 1, 2011
TIME OF MEETING: 3:00 p.m.
PLACE OF MEETING: Senior Center
CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Nelson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
ROLL CALL was taken by the secretary as follows:
Present: Nelson, Pearson, Savary, Surridge and Tweedy
Absent: None
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Tweedy led the Pledge of Allegiance.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On motion by Commissioner Surridge, the minutes of the July
7, 2011 meeting were approved.
CONSENT CALENDAR:
1. AGENDA ITEM # 0911-1 SUMMARY REPORT - (ACTION)
On motion by Commissioner Surridge, Commission accepted the July 7, 2011
Senior Commission meeting summary report.
AYES: Nelson, Savary and Surridge

DEPARTMENT REPORTS:
2. AGENDA ITEM # 0911-2 CENSUS DATA (INFORMATION)
Received a demographic census data report provided by the Planning
department. According to the ESRI's Tapestry Segmentation Area Profile for
Carlsbad, ages 65 to 84 are projected to increase 124 percent in the years 2008
to 2040.
Questions arose if the Planning and Finance department have thought of what
type of provisions to consider for the projected growth of senior's living in
Carlsbad.
3. AGENDA ITEM # 0911-3 SENIOR CENTER TOURS (INFORMATION)
Commission discussed the idea of going to other local senior centers to see
their facilities and view their operations. Suggestion was made to invite
commissioners and or managers to meet and discuss mutual interests and ideas
and see if there is an interest to meet on a quarterly or annual bases.

4. AGENDA ITEM #0911-4 SENIOR COMMISSION MEETING FREQUENCY
(INFORMATION)
Out of consideration for Commissioners time, staff suggested that the
Commission review their frequency of meetings and determine if they would like
to alter their meeting schedule. Commission agreed to continue their monthly
meetings as scheduled.
5. AGENDA ITEM #0911-5 SENIOR CENTER REPORT (ACTION)
Sue Spickard, Recreation Services Manager, gave an overview of the August
special events and highlights for September. Some of the special events for
August were: Women, Retirement and The Power in Aging, Living a Brain-
Healthy Lifestyle and Skin Cancer Prevention and Treatment Seminar. In
September CVS Flu Shot Clinic will provide "All-in-one Influenza Vaccine." The
annual Ice Cream Social will be held at Pine Park. Workshops being offered are:
Digital Photo Introduction, Fun with Ipad, and Fun with Photoshop 4 Razzle-
Dazzle. Last but not least the 2nd annual Fall Prevention Awareness Faire will be
held in the auditorium. Health-care and safety professionals will be here to
assess each participant.
6. AGENDA ITEM #0911-6 RECREATION AREA MANAGER'S POSITION
INFORMATION
Chairperson Nelson presented a letter for consideration regarding the position of
Recreation Area Manager.

Senior Center as a drop-off point for expired drugs and prescription drugs.
Senior mentoring with local schools.
ADJOURNMENT:
By proper motion, the Regular Meeting of September 1, 2011 was adjourned at 4:05 p.m. to
the Boards and Commissions annual dinner on September 29, 2011.
