MEETING OF: Senior Commission

CALL TO ORDER: Commissioner Pearson called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
ROLL CALL:
Present: Min, Nelson, Pearson, Sachs, and Tweedy
Absent:
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Nelson
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: By proper motion, the minutes ofthe Senior Commission
meeting of December 4, 2013 and March 27, 2014 were accepted and approved.
CONSENT CALENDAR:
1. AB # 0514-1 SUMMARY REPORT (ACTION)
Accepted, approved and filed the December 4, 2013 and March 27, 2014 Senior
Commission meeting summary report.
DEPARTMENT REPORTS:
AB # 0514-2 PHARMACEUTICAL DROP BOX (INFORMATION)
Commission continued to discuss the pharmaceutical drop box program located at the City
of Carlsbad Safety Center, and requested that staff investigate mobile drop box programs
offered by other service providers in an effort to reach seniors who are not able to go to the
Safety Center.
Kevin Granse, Recreation Area Manager, reported a flyer is being drafted by staff to
provide information about the drop box program. Some other suggestions were: invite
local doctors and dentists to participate and share the drop box program information with
their patients; approach educational organizations like the PTA and other community
organizations, produce a PSA for the community channel, and the city's closed circuit T.V.
AB # 0514-3 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY (INFORMATION)
Commission recommended that staff request an inspection in the future to help identify
ways in which the Senior Center can incorporate upgrades and improvements to the facility
which assist in the environmental sustainability of the facility.

Granse stated that repairs and replacement to city property are scheduled as necessary
and that sustainable measures are considered during this time. Staff will schedule a
walkthrough with the appropriate staff when feasible to discuss options for the future in
which sustainable measures may be incorporated within the facility.
AB # 0514-4 COMMUNICATION WITH OTHER COMMISSIONS (INFORMATION)
Commission discussed methods in which they could share issues pertaining to the senior
population with other City of Carlsbad Boards & Commissions. Staff will investigate and
present options to the commissioners.
AB # 0514-5 SENIOR CENTER REPORT (INFORMATION)
Kevin Granse, gave an oral report on the ongoing activities and upcoming events.
