CALL TO ORDER: Chairperson Sachs called the Regular Meeting to order at 3:10 p.m.
ROLL CALL: Chairperson Sachs took roll call:
Present: Commissioners Min, Nelson, Pearson, Sachs, and Tweedy
Absent: None
PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Commissioner Pearson led the Pledge of Allegiance
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Chairperson Sachs asked if there were any corrections or revisions to the minutes of
the meeting October 22, 2015.
Commissioner Nelson stated that the portion of the minutes pertaining to the
reappointment of Commissioners was incorrect. It should state that Commissioners
Tweedy and Pearson were reappointed.

2. AB # 0316~2 ELECTION OF SENIOR COMMISSION OFFICERS (ACTION)
Commission elected Commission Officers for the 2016 calendar year.

3. AB # 0316.,.3 GOALS UPDATES (INFORMATION)
Kevin Granse, Recreation Area Manager, updated commissioners on the following goals:
1. lntergenerational-Kevin Granse and Michael Bodman, Recreation Supervisor, who
oversees the after school program for teens attended an intergenerational workshop in
Escondido in February. Mr. Granse stated it was well attended and informative. One of
the main points that was discussed at the workshop was to start small and grow slowly.
Staff has begun brainstorming ideas that could benefit both the teen and senior
programs.

Commissioner Nelson suggested that senior citizen's stories could be recorded by
teens. Mr. Granse, stated that the Carlsbad High School students have interviewed
and filmed a WWII veteran in the past.
2. Outdoor fitness equipment
Mr. Granse stated that there are initial plans at Calavera Hills Community Park for
fitness work stations. He also mentioned that the City of San Marcos is in the process
of converting a playground to senior fitness work station. Mr. Granse will follow-up at a
later date on estimated costs of the equipment.
3. Professional speakers
Mr. Granse asked commissioners if they would bring back their suggestions for
speakers to come and speak at either the commission meeting or at the Senior Center.
Chairperson Sachs informed Mr. Granse and the Commission that UCSD has an
educational program for lifelong learning and has professional speakers there.
4. Touring other Senior Centers
Mr. Granse stated that if commissioners were interested in touring other senior center
facilities, he would arrange tours with the appropriate staff. A tour could be done after
adjourning from a regularly scheduled Senior Commission meeting, or by arranging
tours including no more than two commissioners in order to not have a quorum.
4. AB # 0316-4 SENIOR CENTER REPORT (INFORMATION)
Kevin Granse, Recreation Area Manager, gave an oral report on the ongoing activities and
upcoming events. He distributed the monthly statistical report to the Commissioners.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Mr. Granse addressed Commissioner Nelson's email on asking for clarification on how the
commission communicates to the City Council. Mr. Granse stated that Chris Hazeltine, Parks and
Recreation Director, informed him that the commission can write a letter to City Council.
Commissioner Nelson asked if the procedure could be in writing. Mr. Granse said he would
follow-up to see if that was allowable.

Caleb Willes, a Carlsbad High School student, gave public comment on inter-
generational activities. He stated that students would need incentives to get involved,
for example, community service hours or extra class credit.
Erin Vaupel, a Carlsbad High School student, gave a public comment on inter-generational
activities and programs. She thought a lot of the events are not well advertised for
community events for teens to attend.
