Dear Ms. Almeida: In ar.:cordance with your letter dated December 11, 1992, we hnve completed a limited subsurface evaluation of the garage slab at the subjed residence (Figure 1). As you know, we conducted a preliminary geotechn.ical evaluation of tlw propci·ty in May 1991 a1,d prepared the above-referenced report. The purpose of our additional :;tu<ly <l«s<:dbcd herein was to evaluate the cause(s) of the geotechn.ically n:lat"'d di~lr1..-i;s lo the garage slab at the sile and 10 provide rccommend11tions for the construction of a new garage slab. A subsurface evaluation of the subject resi<le111.:e and the exterior site Improvements, and the formulation of repair recommendations pertaining to these structures, was not induded in the scope of uur study, SCOPE The scope of our subsurface evaluation of the garage slab cunsisheu of the following: • • • ♦ • Review of the above-rds:n;:ncc:d reporl and project file . Coring of the garage slab, and logging and sampling of thte furn1<1lional m~lerial el\COUl\tercd bcncnlh the slab. Rizzuto property. We also 1rnted that a small piece of the garage &lab adjacent lo the driveway slab hnd been removed and patched. The homeowner, Mr. RLt.zuto, stated that the portion of the garage slab had been removed to allow tht< garage door to dose. An .ipproximately 1/16-inch wide sep~rAtion with approximately 1-inch of vertical offs<!:! was also observed between the garage slah ,md the driveway slabs. Our exploratory core through the garage slab was performed on December 15, 1992. Al the lor.:11llon of the core (Pigure 2)1 the garage slab wns :ipproximat<?ly 3-1/2 inches thick and no slab relnforcem,mt was observed, The ~lab was underlain by fine co"dy clayey siltstone of the Scripps Formation. Additional descriptions of the materials encountered in the excavation are provided on the attached geut1:<1:hnkal log (Figw·e 3). Laboratory tests were performed by our firm lo evaluate the in-situ moisture content and dry density, the degree of saturation, and the expansion polenlial of representative samples of the formational material obtained from tht< garage 6lab excavation. The in-eitu moisture content of the tested samples ranged from approximately 19 to 20 percent and averaged approximately 19 percent. The in-situ dry dei, slty ranged from approximately 94 to 101 pounds per cubic foot and averaged approximately 97 pow11.ls per cubic foot, The degree of saturation ranged from approximately 65 to 82 percent aml averaged approximately 73 percent. The expansion potential of the tested samples rangt<d frurn negligible lo less than 3/4 percent. Laboratory test results are provided cm the geolechnkal log (rigure 3) 1,nd on Figure 4. Based on the findings of our sub~urface .:!valuation, It is our upi11.iun thal lhe cr.:,cks in the garage slab were primaiily c:au~ed by 50111<? cxpansiun of llw near surface formationnl material and the ab5ence of appropriate slab un<li:erlaymenl. Our opinion is based particularly on our laboratory test results, as wdl as 01, the pattern of \hie garage slab cr~cks and separation,. 2 ·------- -·---A• ,:..-,.,,,-,.._.,,.-r-., :;;g,._, ; ...,GARA,9B SLAB RECOMMENDATIONS •To i:epair the distress to the garag"' Blab and reduce \he potential for future soil rela\e<i distre&s, we recommend that the existing garage slab be removed. ln addition, approxi- mately 7 inches of the subgrade soils should also be removed to allow the placement of appropriate slab underlayment, The new concrete garage slab should be 4 inches or greatE'r in thickness and reinforced with Nu, 4 reinforcing 8teel bars ploced at 12 inches on-center, both ways. The reinforcement shuultl be located In the middle one-third of the slab height and "chalrs11 should be utilized to ald in the proper ~IM~m~nt of thg reinf orc@m@nt. r1ior to the placement of thi: ~lab underlaymc:nl, the oubgrodc ohould b8 moisture condiHnnP..-1. The underlayment ~huuld cons!st of 2 inches of dcnn moist sand underlain by a 6-mil pla~tic (Visqueen) moisture barrier. The moisture barrier should bi: w1derlah, by 4 inchte~ o{ moist clean sand o~or equivalent crushed rock). The concrtele utilized in the new slnb should be placed with a slump not exceeding 4 lnches. We further 1·ecommend that the new garage slab be constructed independently from the garag" foundalio1, (i.e., the slab t:hould not be structurally connected to the existing foulings). We recommend that Ninyo & Moore ubs.,rve the repair operation~ tu cvruua(e adherence to the recommendations provided in this report.
