(9(p1 J\7 January 16, 1992 Job No.: 91-73 Bentley Builders. 258 Juniper Street, B-8 Carlsbad, California 92009 Attention: Mr. Verne Bentley Subject: Wall Backfill Lot 34 of Tract 81-19 2210 Sara Way Carlsbad, California Gentlemen: Construction of a retaining wall beneath the footing of the front wall of the residential structure on the subject site is nearing completion. This wall and segments of pre-existing retaining walls adjoining it are to be waterproofed. Then subdrains are to be installed behind them. The excavation that was made to accommodate construction of the wall now being completed, waterproofing of all of the retaining walls, and installation of the subdrãins will have to be backfilled to restore permanent lateral support to adjacent ground and to restore support to segments of footings and a floor slab undermined by the excavation. This letter presents recommendations for placement of the backfill. Typically, the existing excavation is about eleven feet (111 ) deep and between two and four feet (2' to 41) wide. It has been shored, 150 SOUTH PROSPECT AVENUE TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA 92680 (714) 544-2215 FAX 544-7395 Bentley Builders -2- January 16, 1992 Job No.: 91-73 and it is understood that shoring will be maintained while waterproofing of the walls and installation of the subdrains is in progress. The shoring is to be removed as the excavation is backfilled. It is important that the waterproofing applied be protected from damage and that the subdrains installed be protected from contamination during backfilling. It also is important that workmen be protected from hazards that might exist when shoring is removed. It also is important that the backfill placed be compact and capable of resisting lateral earth pressures and structural - loads imposed without allowing potentially damaging displacements. Accordingly, it has been recommended that the excavation be backfilled with a sand/cement slurry that can be pumped in without concrete trucks having to approach the excavation and without workmen having to enter the excavation to compact the backfill. The process recommended is outlined below: Before removing shoring, protect the subdrain installed by covering it with gravel (at least 1 cubic foot per lineal foot of drain) and a sheet of filter fabric (Mirafi Polyfilter X or equivalent). Remove shoring in segments and backfill each segment immediately with low-slump, sand/cement slurry (at least 2 sacks cement per cubic yard of slurry) pumped into the excavation. 1. Cement content may be increased and bentonite may be added as necessary to facilitate pumping. However, addition of water should be limited to maintain a low- slump consistency and prevent water bleeding into the subdrain. DOUGLAS E. MORAN, INC. TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA Bentley Builders -3- January 16, 1992 Job No.:. 91-73 Fill excavation to within 5 feet of adjacent grade before removing next segment of shoring and proceeding. Terminate sand/cement slurry fill below level of footings that remain unsupported. C. Inject a more fluid .grout to fill the underfloor portion of the excavation and restore support to the • floor slab and footings undermined by the excavation. Grout should consist of concrete sand, cement (7 sacks per cubic yard), and fly-ash (250 pounds per cubic yard). Grout should be pumped to a point near the middle of the floor slab, from both sides of the unsupported portion. Pressure should be monitored carefully •as grout is being pumped. If grout pressure rises (with respect to the pressure necessary to overcome line friction), by more than about 2 p.s.i., injection points should be withdrawn to the extent necessary to prevent further increase in pressure and lifting of the floor slab. C. Grouting may be terminated after increases in pressure have forced injection points to be withdrawn to the locations of the footings and grout is being extruded from beneath the footings. DOUGLAS E. MORAN, INC. TUSTIN, CALIFORNIA Bentley Builders -4- January 16, 1992 Job No.: 91-73 d. The rest of the excavation (outside of the structure) may be filled with compacted soil or with a combination of sand/cement slurry (to footing depth) and compacted soil. If the existing excavation is to be backfilled in the manner recommended (as described above), soil engineering inspection and testing of the backfill are not considered necessary by this office.
