Georgina Cole Library hours are Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dove Library and Library Learning Center are providing computer hours Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the computers, staff are issuing library cards and collecting fines that may have accrued prior to March 15. Other parts of the library remain closed. Approximately 30 patrons visited all three locations during the first week. In September, nearly 22,000 items were checked out to patrons through curbside service, which continues to be available Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Nearly 24,000 items were returned during the month. The Library & Cultural Arts Department also reached another milestone achievement in September: Connecting community members with more than 75,000 library items (books, DVDs, CDs, etc.) through curbside service since its June 1 launch. Children’s Librarian Allyson Goodwin was selected to serve as a voter for the California Young Reader Medal award. In order to vote, Allyson had to read 80% of the titles in each category. She successfully completed this requirement, reading 177 books (77 in picture book format and 100 in chapter book format). Voting will take place on Oct. 10. A team of Library & Cultural Arts staff collaborated to create free art kits to be distributed to teens via curbside library service. The art kits include instructions on how to create a graphic novel with writing prompts and examples. The kits will be distributed beginning in mid- October. Four staff attended the combined Computers in Libraries and Internet Librarian virtual conference over the week of Sept. 21. The conference focused on implementing library technology and navigating impacts related to COVID and library services via technology-based approaches. Library Business Systems staff worked in conjunction with the city’s IT Department to complete the installation of new receipt printers that work with the city’s new point of sale system called iPayment. The new printers were critical in allowing staff to print both patron circulation transaction receipts and payment receipts. The iPayment solution includes specialized software which integrates accounting processes into the library patron database as well as new hardware such as check and credit card processing receipt printers and cash drawers. All of this results in improved financial accounting procedures as well as faster service to patrons and customers. Page 5 of 22 Monthly Library Report for September 2020 The library continued its virtual concert series with a Live From My Living Room concert featuring twin guitar players The Bassett Bros. on Sept. 17. Two additional September virtual events included a panel featuring eight best-selling authors and a complementary virtual game of bingo on Sept. 26, which was attended by 60 people, as well as a lecture and short film screening hosted on Zoom on Sept. 30 and attended by 27 people. Library book clubs for adults met on Zoom for the fifth month, with more than 50 people total attending the four clubs. Learning Center … In celebration of International Literacy Day on Sept. 8, the State Library hosted the first-ever virtual Writer to Writer Celebration. Seventy-nine tutors, learners and staff members throughout California library literacy programs logged on to hear the winning letters read. Interim Principal Librarian Carrie Scott emceed the event where State Librarian Greg Lucas was the featured speaker. Page 6 of 22 Monthly Library Report for September 2020 On Sept. 15, the Spanish Book Club resumed their monthly meetings after a summer break. The group met virtually on Zoom and had the honor of hosting author Renato Cisnero of La Distancia entre Nosotros/The Distance Between Us. Retired library Community Outreach Supervisor Lizeth Simonson moderated the group’s discussion with 12 book club members. Literacy staff continue to find ways to keep tutors and learners connected through check-in calls, emails with links to resources and virtual program development. The priority is to provide learners with resources and activities focused on the top three learner goals: read a book, write a letter, develop digital literacy skills. Ninety-four volunteer hours were logged by Literacy Services tutors who have worked with their learners remotely. Nearly half of our learners on the active roster are being served by one or more of our initiatives, including News Crew, Book Club, Build Your Home Library, voting resources, Learning Upgrade, virtual tutoring sessions and/or Zoom training. Library Assistant Sandra Riggins facilitated three virtual News Crew groups where literacy learners practiced reading skills by reading about and discussing current events using the News for You newspaper, which is aimed at helping people improve their reading, writing and comprehension of English. Three learners are enrolled and have attended. Library Technician Drea Giaconelli facilitated the first virtual literacy book club meeting on Sept. 24. Five learners and two tutors attended the session that featured the popular book The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes. Literacy staff began distributing books to learners in the “Build Your Home Library” program funded by the California State Library Literacy Services grant. Sixty-two fiction and biography books have been mailed to eighteen of our adult learners so far (30% of the program’s enrolled learners). Staff members reached out to four learners with the goal of "Prepare to Vote" or "Vote.” An Easy Voter Guide was mailed to two of the learners, and one learner has registered to vote and has the necessary information. Outreach and Community Connections … Census workers partnered with library staff to provide outreach to the community at the Library Learning Center on Sept. 14. Information on the importance of completing the Census was provided to 41 community members and parents of the MAAC HeadStart program located on-site at the Learning Center property. Two patrons completed their Census onsite. Staff coordinated seven deliveries of 30 items to the patrons in the library’s homebound program. In addition, library staff coordinated with the Carlsbad Senior Center staff to distribute the library’s program information to the Senior Center’s 100 homebound patrons.
