Carrie Scott Interim Principal Librarian introduced new Library Assistant Christina Lorenzo at the
Library Learning Center and Senior Management Analyst Fiona Everett introduced new Senior
Office Specialist Brian Buchholtz at the Georgina Cole Library.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes of the Library Board of Trustees meeting held July 22, 2020.
Motion by Vice Chair Hu Isa rt, seconded by Trustee DeForest, to approve the Minutes of the
meeting held on July 22, 2020 as presented. Motion carried, 5/0/0/0.
PUBLIC COMMENTS: None.
MONTHLY LIBRARY REPORTS: The board received the monthly library reports for July 2020.
SUMMER READING ADVENTURE REPORT: Senior Librarian Marsha Weeks presented to the
board a report on the Summer Reading Adventure program for 2020.
LIBRARY SERVICES DURING COVID-19: Director Smithson updated the board on library services
during COVID-19.

ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE-CHAIR: Art Larson was re-elected Chair and Beth Hulsart was re-
elected Vice-Chair unanimously, 5/0/0/0.
APPOINTMENT OF A REPRESENTATIVE TO THE CARLSBAD LIBRARY & ARTS FOUNDATION:
Gina McBride was re-elected representative to the Carlsbad Library & Arts Foundation
unanimously, 5/0/0/0.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Smithson updated the board on a variety of topics: Deputy
Library Director recruitment; library website design and test volunteers; Children's Garden
open for wi-fi usage; Chapters Cafe soft re-opening; ADA parking construction; budget carry-
forwards; Census 2020; mail ballot drop-off locations; Carlsbad Friends of the Library
commencing online book sales; and new awnings installed at Georgina Cole Library and Library
Learning Center.
FOUNDATION REPORT: Representative McBride reported the Foundation met with financial
advisors for a status on investments and the annual gala has been canceled due to COVID-19.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY REPORT: Representative Hulsart shared that the Carlsbad Friends of
the Library are returning to the Carlsbad City Library to sell books online.
NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY REPORT: Board Liaison was not in
attendance.
LIBRARY BOARD COMMENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS: The Trustees offered their gratitude to staff
for the various ways they continue to support the community.
ADJOURNMENT: Chair Larson adjourned the meeting at 5:10 p.m.
