Consulting Geotechnical Engineers & Geologists 1645 South Rancho Santa Fe Road, Suite 208, San Marcos, California 92078 Office: 760-761-0799, Cell: 760-331-8738 smsgeosol.incgmail.com Project No.: FC-12-14-33 March 9, 2015 Rancho Farms Construction Mr. Majid Mortazavi 1608 Lake Drive Cardiff, California 92007 Southern Property Margin Temporary Vertical Wall Backcut, La Costa Villas Project, Lot 401, 7570 Gibraltar Street, Carlsbad, California (Drawing No. 483-2A) In accordance with your request, the undersigned have visited the site on March 9, 2015 to further observe and evaluate the temporary wall vertical backcut excavation developed along the southern property margins at the time of recent pad grading operations. The temporary wall backcut approaches 13 feet in vertical height and exposes very stiff and moderately to well compact compacted fills placed during the original site development. The southern building basement type wall foundations and lower C1P stem have been poured, and we understand wall water proofing, backdrain (perforated pipe surrounded in crushed rocks) installations and backfilling are now planned. The purpose of our visit and this transmittal was to further evaluate temporary stability of the exposed temporary wall backcut for the waterproofing and backfilling to proceed. Further geologic and engineering inspection of the southern margins temporary wall backcut excavation indicated that clayey fill exposures remain in a very stiff and compact conditions and are performing satisfactorily for temporary conditions . No indication of adverse geologic structure or immanent instability was in evidence in the temporary wall backcut exposures. However, prolonged exposures shall be not allowed and wall constructions and backfilling carried out as soon as possible. Hard hats shall be worn when working behind the wall during waterproofing and backdrain Page lof 2 installations. As an extra safety precautionary measure, a designated worker with a "blow-horn" should be situated at the top of excavations and observing the backcut conditions when a work is inside the confined space between of the lower pour section of the wall and the backcut. Based on our conversations with the project developer Mr. Majid Motazavi of Rancho Farms Construction, the dumping of the %-inch crushed rocks on the backside of the wall will be done with proper construction equipment to expedite the operation and minimize manual work, and as long as there is no rain for the next 10 days, his prediction is that this wall will be backfilled, compacted, protected and completed in less than one week. We appreciate this opportunity to be of service to you. If you have any questions or need clarification, please contact this office at your convenience.
