Subject: Vitrocem Polyester and Vitrocem 90 Percent In- organic \Vall Coating Systems. If. Description: A. General: The mteriaIs are intended for use on surfaces regulated by Section 1711 of the Uniform 'luildiiig Code. Two systems are available, Vitrocem 100 liercetit solids polyester glaze system and Vitrocem. 90 percent inorganic system. Vitrocem 100 percent solids consists of polyesters, silica, surfing and coloring agents and promoters. Vitrocem 90 percent inorganic system involves the use of inorganic pigments, white portland cement, silica sand, extenders and binders. B. Installation: I. General: The Vitrocem 100 percent polyester and the Vitrocem 90 percent inorganic systems may be used on new substrates of portland cement plaster, water-resistant gypsum backing board, exterior grade plywood, concrete, concrete block and cement asbestos board. All substrates governed by the code must be installed in accordance with the code. The surfaces must be dean and free of bond breaking agents containing wax or oil. The surfaces are to be free of gross irregularities. Defective sur- faces may be patched with Vitrocem polyester patching compounds. Vitrocem 100 percent solid polyester is used on new surfaces of concrete, portland cement plaster, water-resistant gypsum back- ing board, cement asbestos board and plywood, a four-coat system. This consists of two color coats, a decorative spotting coat of one or more colors and a clear glaze. On new concrete block, it four- coat system is used consisting of a.filler, color, decorative spotting and clear glaze. Over existing painted surfaces, it five-coat system J5 used consisting of a barrier coat and the succeeding coats as above. Wall temperatures should he at least 60°F. during application and for a period of 24 hours after. Surfaces to be coated most have a moisture content of 5 percent or less. All coats are roller applied except decorative spotting, which is applied by Vitroveill Itmottliug gun. Total overall dry thickness is approximately 25 mils oti smooth surfaces and up to 50 mils on concrete block. Vitrocem 90 percent inorganic glaze coating: Substrates for this material must have a moisture content of 16 percent or less and the temperature between 32°F. and 100°F. A six-coat system is used on all substrates consisting of a presealer, a rout, .a color a decorative spiittitmg and two sealer Coats. The presealer is appiieJ by brush, spray or roller at a rate of 400 to 500 square feet per gallon and allowed to dry for two hours minimum. The grout coat is spray applied to a uniform smooth surface. Rate of coverage for concrete block is 35 to 50 square feet per gallon and 80 to 90 square feet per gallon on smooth surfaces. Overnight drying is necessary. The color coat is airless spray applied to a uniform coverage of approximately 300 square feet per gallon. The decor- ative spotting is opt umal and is applied with it mottling gun one hour alter the color coat; Hate of coverage will vary from 1000 to 5000 square feet per gallon depending on the density desired. This coat most dry 24 hours before tIle first glaze coating is spray applied at a rate of 200 square feet per gallon. A second glaze (•a is spray applied at the same rate two hours after the first glaze coat. The total dry thickness is 25 to 30 mils on smooth sur? faces and 50 to (U) mu5 oo concrete block. C.
