This plan is specifically based on the 1994 Editions of UFC Article 81, UFC Standard 81-2, and the Uniform Building Code. GENERAL This facility is classified as a Group S, Division 1 Occupancy (warehouse) and Group B Occupancy (offices) per UFC, Section 216-0. Distance to exits does not exceed 200 feet at any point in the building. The building has a footprint of approximately 150,159 square feet, including a mezzanine of 12,210 sq. ft. The building is protected with three existing sprinkler systems designed to deliver a density of .45 gpm over the most demanding 3,000 sq.ft. of floor area. These systems were installed by Grinnell Fire Protection, Inc. in 1997 under contract with Koll Construction, Inc. (Lot 50) This facility will be used as a high piled/rack storage and distribution facility. The owner intends to store a variety of it's products, including a mix of it's finished goods (golf clubs, golf bags, club head covers, golf apparel, golf balls, etc.) as well as raw materials used to manufacture its products. All items to be stored have been determined to be Class I through Class IV commodities, including graphite golf shafts (see attached). Storage array will be based upon pallet racks arranged in single and double rows with aisle widths not less than 63". For the purpose of this report, storage is assumed to be a maximum of 22' in height. . ·.; ... ·.. . . .... . ,. • • X ,,... . CONSOLIDATED FIREPROTECTION : ·. INC. A Fire Design Group Co. Callaway Golf Distribution Center Fire Protection Plan (Cont.) Page2 SPRINKLER CALCULATIONS / .... · -r . Utilizing the UPC Standard 81-2 the sprinkler design densities are determined based on the following information: Aisles Height of Storage Type of Rack Commodity Class Ceiling Height 63 Inches (5'-311 ) Up to 22 Feet Single and Double Row I-IV including products and packaging with limited and/or appreciable amounts of Group A plastics. 26' Per table 6-11.1 of the UFC Standard 81-2, un-encapsulated class IV commodities are permitted to be stored in-racks up to 22 ft. in height, without the inclusion of in-rack sprinklers. For storage arrays with 8' aisles, the prescribed ceiling density (fig. d, Curve E) would be .45/3,000 sq.ft. For storage arrays with 4' aisles, the prescribed ceiling density (fig. d, Curve G) would be .52/3,000. Linear interpolation is permitted to calculate the demand for ceiling density where aisle widths are between 4' and 8', as in this case. These calculations are as follows: 1. .52 (density @ 4' aisles) .::_._45_ (density@ 8' aisles) .07 (difference) 2. .JI1 = .0175 (incremental value per ft. of aisle width) 4 3. .0175 (incremental value per ft.) 1,2500 (1 '-3" width greater than 4 ') .021875 (value to be subtracted from the density@ 4' aisles) 4. .52000 (density @ 4' aisles) -,021875 .498125 5. Application of figure 6-9.2 (Ceiling sprinkler density -vs-storage height) requires using 130% of the density: .498125 X 1.3 = ·.6475625 . . . ......... ....:. .. ·.·.· ... -~ . : .. :·· ~ . ·.-.: ·=· . 1- . . -CONSOLIDATED FIREPROTECTION INC. Some products have limited or appreciable amounts of group A plastic (natural rubber grips on clubs, plastic parts on bags.) However, it should be noted that per figure 8-2, parts d, the demand for storage of group A plastics (cartoned, expanded or un-expanded, stable) stored 20' high with <5' ceiling clearance is 0.6 gpm per ft./4,000 sq.ft. The use of ELO sprinklers permits a reduction in area to 2,000 sq.ft. As such, upgrading the system(s) density at this facility to .65/2,650 will permit storage of Class I -IV products to 22' and Group A plastics to 20' in pallet racks, without in- rack sprinkler protection, with the caveat being that Group A plastics must be maintained in the a~eas of the warehouse where ceiling heights do not exceed 25'. HAZARDOUS MATERIALS No hazardous materials are used or stored within this facility. DUST COLLECTION No work is performed at this location which will generate dust or require collection. CURTAIN BOARDS/SMOKE AND HEAT VENTS Pursuant to Carlsbad Fire Department policy, we request permission to omit draft curtain boards this warehouse facility. The ratio of smoke and heat vents to floor area will be increased to I :50. •. ?. -· ••..• -... _ ...... : ~-. . . ~--·. -:·_ ~ I-. J. • ~ .. CONSOLIDATED FIREPROTECTION -INC. A Fire Design Group Co. Callaway Golf Distribution Center Fire Protection Plan (Cont) Page4 GENERAL FIRE PROTECTION No smoking will be permitted in the building. Aisle ways in the rack storage area shall not be blocked and a minimum of 44" clearance will be maintained for all aisles when stocking is being done and merchandise will be kept on one side of the aisle. Exit doors will be kept unobstructed and will be opened weekly to ensure their operation. Exit signs will be kept illuminated while the building is occupied and the emergency lighting in the building will be checked on a monthly basis. · Fire extinguishers will be mounted three feet to five feet from the floor in a conspicuous area and identified with a sign. Fire extinguishers will be placed so that an occupant would not have to travel more than 75 feet to reach one. Preferred locations may be designated by the Fire Marshal. Employees will be trained in the proper use of fire extinguishers. SMALL HOSE CONNECTIONS Small hose connections from adjacent overhead sprinkler system will be installed so that one hundred feet of hose will reach any part of the building. It is requested that the hose, nozzle and rack requirements be waived. Section 81.1 lO(b) of the UFC allows this latitude. We do not want the employees to take time to try and fight a fire with 1- 1/2 inch hose lines in high pile stock areas. This is a dangerous fire fighting procedure. The presence of this hose only tempts employees to engage in fire fighting when they should be directing their energies to the evacuation from the building. To summarize our request to omit fire hose equipment: • Fire Departments carry their own hose packets and are generally trained not use this equipment. • Employees are directed specifically not to use this equipment, but to evacuate the building. • Liability risks, if employees do use this equipment and are injured or killed. • Maintenance of the equipment is difficult. As this building is fully protected with sprinkler systems which will contain the fires without the first aid 1-1/2 inch hose lines. Fire extinguishers are provided for small incipient fires. .......... Kathleen Rogers, the previous Chubb Loss Control Representative for Callaway Golf, and I completed a good amount of research to come up with a commodity classification for the Distribution Center which Callaway had planned in the past, but was not built. Enclosed are MSDS's for the golf grips and carbon fiber prepreg. The prepreg MSDS's are for the material in its uncured form. I would consider the cured prepreg as having less flammability than the uncured prepreg. Even in its uncured state, the prepreg has an NFPA flammability rating of "1". The grips are classified as a Group B plastic (Class IV commodity). Add into that the non-combustible metal heads (titanium alloy in massive form), and my conclusion is that the finished clubs are a Class IV commodity. Additionally, all correspondence in my file indicates that the commodity classification for storage in 2285 Rutherford Road (which stored finished carbon-fiber shaft clubs at the time of the classification) was determined to be Class IV. Feel free to used this letter and the enclosed materials in support of your commodity classification for the finished clubs. If you feel that my analysis is incorrect for any reason, please let me know. Sincerely, ~chard C. Vescription: Double Wall One-hour Fire-resistive Rated Parli· lion System: The partition is a 3-inch-thick, nonbearing, noncombustible panition. ll consists of two independent sandwiches comJY'sed of 1/s-inch- thick gypsum wallboard clad on the outer face with a No. 26 gauge steel skin and on the inner face with a No. 28 gauge steel skin interjocked along both vertical edges. Except at post locations the cavity between the sand- "·iches is filled with three-pound density thennafiber felt insulation batts. Posts employed in the partiti<>n are rectangular-shaped No. 26 gauge steel posts with lhe inner cavity filled with gypsum. Each side of the posts is covered by %-inch-thick gypsum board. The outer gypsum board strips arc anached to post assemblies with !%-inch-long drywall nails located at the lop. center and bottom of the post. The wallboard used in the post assembly is F1RECOOEll Type C gypsum wallboard. On erection the .floor, ceiling and wall channels are attached to the supporting framing with approved fasteners. The posts are posi- tioned and the post stilt is set on the floor channel. The yost exten- sion is raised up until engaged into the ceiling channe spreader. The panels are assembled on one side of the wall by fast pushing them up into the ceiling channel and then pushing the panel return flange into the continuous grip of the post joint. Spreaders are positioned on the Boor channels at 40 inches on center. A nominal 2-inch-thick batt of insulation having a density of three pounds per cubic foot is fitted into the space between the posts against I.he erected p:tnel halves and other panel halves are then installed. End filler panels are inserted into wall channel and opposite vertical edge is engaged into post. The steel outer base is snapped over flange of floor channel. Each panel is secured with two No. 7 hr 1-inch she~t metal screws into the post and panel spreader below the base line. The partition height cannot exceed 12 feet. The partition has a Class I finish classification v.•hen tested-in accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 42-J. Readywall: The system consists of 2.35-inch-thick solid panels with floor, ceiling and wall tracks. The panel is of sandwich-I~ construction, composed of No. 22 gauge steel skins reinforced on the inside.with 2-inch- wide piece~ of Johns-Manville "Fesco" board. The remaining portions of the inside cal'ity are filled with 2.5 percent density mineral wool baas. The installation of the Readywall system consis1s of attaching the ceiling and wall channels to the supporting frame with approved fasteners. The barbed base plates are set on the carpeted floor. The panels are inserted into lhe ceiling channel and lowered onto the carpel gripper. This produces a concentrated load on the carpet gripper that forces ·the barbed teeth through the weave of the crupet and down into the carpel backing and provides positive lateral positioning of the panel. The top of the panel must ex.tend a minimum of 1 ¾ inches into the ceiling track. Where !he floor covering is vinyl tile, a flat bottom gripper (no barbs) containing double-faced tape is used in lieu of the barbed plate. The gripper is installed on the floor and pressed into place. The panel is then installed in a similar manner as previously described. Additional details are shown in Figure No. 1. The panition is nonfire-resistive nonbearin!l, and the heigh! cannoc exccc<l IO feet. The partition ha~ a Class I finish classification. DOI: The system consists of 2.37-inch-thick solid panels with floor. ceiling and wall tracks. The panel is similar in construction to the Ready- wall panel The installa~on of the DOI ~ystem consists of attachin~ ~e ceiling channel to a spnng steel node which has been secured to the cxts!Jng ceiling runner. The floor channel is held in place by a steel carpet gripper or an adhesively applied tile gripper. A leveling saddle is placed into the floor channel. The ceiling panel is inserted onto the ceiling channel and lowered so Iha! the leveling screw engages the saddle track. The ~-all panel is secured in place by tightening the leveling screw. Final adjustmt'n!s arc made with an open-end wrench (one and two cums} to ensure posith•e engagement with the saddle track. The ceiling channel must extend a minimum of I½ inches into the top of the panel. Additional details are shown in Figure No. 2. The par1i1ion is nonfire-resisli\·c. nonbearing and the height cannot ex- ceed JO feet. The partition has a Class I fil)ish classification. DOD: The sy_srem is identical lo the DOI system previously described except for the ceiling''i:ind floor attachment details. The continuous ceiling node is secured to a quick clip which engages the ceiling runner. The integral ceiling channel is used to secure the top of the: v.-all panel to the continuous node. A panel levelmg screw, with a spike point on the end, is ~ed to level the p~el and to secure the l'.ancl bottom to a crupeted ~~I tile floor. Fmal adjustments are made with an open-end wrench (o e ~~ two turns) to ensure positive engagement of the carpel weave or floor &i;!,e, ~ The ceiling channel must extend a minimum of I½ inches into the top a panel. Additional deca.ils are shown in Figure No. 3. The partition is nonfire-resistive. nonbearing and 1he height canno ceed IO feel.
