DESIGN BASIS -MODEL 32FS
This document has been prepared under the direct supervision of a
professional engineer registered in the ·state of California in accordance
with commonly accepted structural engineering practices.
Loads applied to the subject building are in accordance with the 1991
Edition of the Uniform Building Code.
The "FS" series building designates an all fire shield building and is lined
with three layers of Type X Gypsum Board. The most critical structural
members used in this building are included in the design calculations.
Where multiple number of similar members are used such as roof purlins or
walls stiffeners, the worst case members that governs the design is checked.
When explosion vent panels are included in the unit, the structure is designed
to resist an internal pressure of 100 psf without rupturing or tearing. It is not
designed to contain the internal pressure without deformations.

The following calculations apply when explosion relief construction is incorporated
in the design of the building (i.e., explosion vent panels are included in the unit).
An explosion force of 100 psf is us~d in these calculations. Under this explosion
force, the building may deform locally but will not rupture or tear allowing the release
of flying material. It is possible for an actual explosion force to exceed 100 psf
depending on what type of material is being stored. Explosion loads greater than
100 psf are beyond the scope of these calculations.

Re: ~eri0r Wall 0e&ig~ of Madel 32FS for (SIS Pharmaceuticals. Inc.
Dear Mr. Silvera:
The exterior walls of the Model 32FS are Type 11N construction and incorporate Under ..
writers lab~tarie5 (UL) Fire Resistance Rating Design Number U505. The U505
Design is used in conjunction with tha load-bearing structural steel design utII~ in
1he Madel 32FS to create a Factory MutuaJ System (FM) Approved two-hour (2 hr.)
fire-rated exterior wall design.
The fire rated walls and ceiling of the .. FS" model, consist of 1'" thick UL Classified
Type sex fire-reslsti.ie gypsum wallboard aandwiched between two (2) layers of 51s•
1hiek UL Classifled Type SLX fire-resistive gypsum waUboard using a famlnating com-
pound. Each layer, in tum, is fastened tQ 14 gauge steel studs. The inner StJrfaces
are proteded by light gauge epoxy-coated galvanaaled steel sheating. This provides
a fire-rating for internal exposure. The outer portion cf the walls is a uniti%ad swcture
consisting of welded and corrosion protected· heavy gauge sheet and strudural steel
creating a weatherprc0f barrier. ·

Dear Mr. Silveira:
Model 32FS-7018
Sales#4932
The 1991 Uniform Fire_ Co~e, Sec. 80.301 (m)2. requires the following:
Mechanical ventilation shall be at a rate of not less than 1 cubic foot per
minute per square foot of floor area over the storage area.
The fan installed in this unit is ventilating at a rate of 450 cfm. .
__ .. ,._. --.. -. ·-· -. ----
The square footage of floor area Is (120" x 383n) / 144 = 319 sq.ft. Thus1 the
required ventilation rate per code for this unit is 319 cfm. The fan is venting at
450 cfm which is greater than 319 cfm.
The inside volume (Lx W x H) of Model 32FS-7018 is:
(383" X 120" X 92") / 1728 = 2447 CU.ft.
The number of air changes per hour is as follows:
((450 cu.fl per min.)./ (2447 cu.ft. of area)) x (60 min. per hr.)
= 11 building air changes per hour.
Please feel free to call me with any questions.

Hello Doug,
The following is the fan housing details we discus~ed.
The system will:
Operate continuously
Exhaust directly to the outside
Provide 6 air changes per hour ( or) 1 cfm per sf floor area
The system provides:
Air outlets located </= 1211 from floor
Air inlets located </= 12" from floor
Cross ventilation
Break glass fan switch
Please call with any questions.
